Detergent composition containing products of condensation of salicylanilide with a fluoroacetone as germicidal agents The present invention relates to a detergent composition, for cosmetic or non-cosmetic use, containing products of condensation of a salicyl @ anilide with a fluoracetone, as as germicidal agents.
More specifically, the germicidal compound is a reaction product of a salicylanilide with a fluroacetone, the condensation taking place on the anilide part of the salicylanilide.
The term detergent includes toilet soaps.
According to the invention, there is provided a detergent composition, for cosmetic or non-cosmetic use, which comprises, as germicidal agent, a condensation product of a salicylani @ lide on a fluoracetone, having the formula
EMI0001.0016
in which X represents hydrogen, chlorine, bromine and iodine, X:
represents a halogen of the class comprising chlorine, bromine and iodine, A represents OH,. chlorine, bromine and iodine, m represents one of the integers 1 and 2, r represents one of the integers 1, 2 and 3 and represents one of the integers 0.1 1 and 2, the sum of r and s always being equal to 3, in an amount ranging up to 10%.
To obtain the present germicides, the reaction used can be more generally specified as follows
EMI0001.0027
EMI0002.0001
that is to say, salicylanilides having the general formula
EMI0002.0003
In these various formulas, X represents hydrogen, chlorine, bromine and iodine, X 'represents chlorine, bromine and iodine, A represents OH, chlorine, bromine and iodine, m represents an integer equal to 1 or 2, r represents one of the integers 1, 2 and 3 and s represents one of the integers 0, 1 and 2, the sum of r and s always being equal to 3.
From the above, it will be appreciated that the reacting fluoroacetone must contain at least two fluorine atoms, which means that the reacting substituted acetone must contain 2, 4 or 6 fluorine atoms, the other substituents being bromine, chlorine and / or iodine.
The other reactant can be a salicylanilide which may contain one or two halogen atoms on the salicylic group and may contain a halogen substituted directly on the anilide group. The reaction first produces a hydroxyl radical attached to the methylene group, which radical can easily be replaced by a halogen atom, such as chlorine, bromine or iodine.

4'-hydroxymethylenehexafluoromethylsalicylanilide
EMI0003.0001
4'-Chloromethylenehexafluoromethylsalicylanilide These compounds can be produced according to the following procedure 4'-h yclroxilirzêthylèraehexa f luorornethylsalic ylanilide and corresponding chlorinated derivatives One mole of salicylanilide is placed in a reaction vessel with enough naphthalene to produce a dilute slurry and the mixture is heated to 170 C with stirring.
While maintaining this temperature, 1.1 moles of hexafluoroacetone hydrate are added over a period of two hours, after which heating is continued for half an hour at 170 C. The hyd-roxylated product is then allowed to cool. and separated as a crude mixture which is recrystallized from a petroleum ether-naphthalene mixture. The tertiary hydroxyl group on the methylene substituent is easily replaced by chlorine by heating under reflux for a short time with said thionyl chloride.
Table I shows examples of compounds which can be used in the present invention.
These compounds have been shown to have excellent activity against bacteria, such as S. aureus and against fungi. Typical germicidal data are shown in Table II. The germicidal activities in this table are given in the same order and for the compounds as shown in Table I. The germicidal activity of the compounds was tested as follows 10 mg of each compound were dissolved in 1000 ml of nutrient broth adjusted to a pH of 6.8. From each dilution, dilutions of 10 ml were prepared in sterile broth by varying the concentration between 10 p. p. mr. and 0.2p. p. m., using 20 tubes for each compound.
Each dilution was seeded with 0.1 ml of a 24 hour old S. aureus culture broth, and all tubes were read for density on a densitometer; these values were then recorded. We inoculated a control broth. All tubes were inoculated at 370 ° C for exactly 24 hours. After inoculation, all tubes were read again on the densitometer, and since the growth of the organism creates a cloudiness, the higher the densitometer reading, the greater the growth. A turbidometric reading equal to that of the control would not indicate any activity of the compound.
A reading equal to that before seeding indicates 100% activity of the compound. The results given in Table II show the minimum concentration for which the increase in reading on the densitometer was observed.
The present compounds are particularly valid in detergent and toilet detergent compositions in an amount equal to 0.001% up to 0.01 0/0 by weight, and up to. about 0.05 0/0 or even 1.0 0/0, 2'0 / 0,
5% and even 10'0 / 0. They can be mixed in commercial toilet detergents, such as neutral sodium and potassium salts (high quality) of fatty acids obtained from tallow, olive oil, olive oil. palm and the like, or with synthetic detergents having no soap properties, ie nonionic, anionic or cationic detergents.
The term detergent as used herein includes fatty acid soaps, as well as synthetic detergents and other detergents, such as fatty alcohol sulfates, fatty acid amides, tripolyphospheres. sodium and their combinations. The term toilet detergent used herein is also employed in its popular sense, i.e. compositions used to cleanse the skin and prepared from an alkali metal compound, such as soda or potash, and a fat or fatty acid, both saturated and unsaturated.
The compositions described herein also include other antiseptic agents, emollients, water softeners, anti-oxides, colorants, perfume, the so-called cold cream product, in additive form, and the like.
The present germicidal compounds can be used with anionic detergents, such as sodium hexadecyl sulfate, or with cationic detergents, such as dimethylstearamidopropyl-2-hydroxyethylammonium diacid phosphate, or with detergents. nonionic products such as condensation products of polyoxypropylene, polyoxyethylene, alone or mixed with other detergents listed above. They are also effective in scouring powders, cleaning detergents and the like.
These compounds have been found to be excellent mildew protection agents and germicidal agents for fibrous materials such as canvas, leather, paper, wood and the like. The treatment of the fibrous materials can be carried out with a solution or a dispersion of the germicide in a liquid medium, leaving about 0.001% 0/0 to 0.05% or even 0,
5% or up to 5% by weight of the germicide in the fibrous material.
The present germicides can be incorporated into plastics such as rubbers, polyethylene, polystyrene, polyurethane, nylon and other similar plastoform and elastoform compositions by incorporating the germicide in an amount between 0.01 % and 0.05% or even 0,
1% or up to 0.5% and 5.0% in the batch which is mixed or kneaded prior to vulcanization, extrusion or other forming operation.
