Method and device for producing aqueous gel and its use for fire fighting The present invention relates to a method for producing aqueous gel and a device for performing the method and the use of the gel for fire fighting.
The aqueous gel can be of the type described in German patent specification No. 1 180 622, where the water is mixed with a gelling agent which contains a surface-active compound that is usually very poorly soluble in water and an oily organic compound. The two components of the gelling agent are preferably organic and evaporable, but as a rule to a lesser extent than water.
The content of gelling agent in the aqueous gel produced is less than 10% by weight, preferably less than 5% by weight and usually about 1-3% by weight. The surface-active component preferably consists of one or more polyethylene oxide derivatives, such as alkyl or aryl polyglycol esters, or from a mixture of these compounds.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a method which enables the production of aqueous gels which are suitable for fire fighting within a few seconds or even fractions thereof, i.e. H. at the same rate as water is fed into a fire by hydrants or pumps.
According to the invention, this is achieved in that, based on the final concentration, water is mixed with an excess of gelling agent and water is added to this mixture in several stages up to the final concentration, the mixture being brought to turbulent flow in and between these stages .
A device suitable for carrying out the method according to the invention consists of a number of pipes which are connected to one another in such a way that the mixture of water and gelling agent flows in a turbulent flow from pipe to pipe and that all pipes are separated from one another with a fresh water supply are connected so that the turbulent flow of the mixture is gradually diluted with fresh water on its way.
In the following the invention is explained with reference to the drawings, for example.
Fig. 1 shows a device suitable for performing the method described, partly in section.
FIG. 2 shows an automatic metering device for the gelling agent, enlarged and in section along the line II-II in FIG. 1.
In FIG. 1, the elongated cylindrical housing 10 is connected via the end cap 12 to the tube base 14 which carries the pump 16. The end cover 12 is a separate part which is fastened to the cylindrical housing 10 in a sealing manner by means of a flange 18 and screws 20. In the interior of the cover 12, the partition 22 forms chamber 24 which is in connection with the pressure side of the pump 16.
The end wall 25 on the other side of the cylindrical housing 10 carries the tubular base 26 through which the aqueous gel emerges after its production and can be fed to a fire site or the like, for example through a hose or nozzle.
In the embodiment shown, the interior of the housing 10 between the partition 22 and the end wall 25 is divided into four mixing chambers 34, 36, 38, 40 by means of three further partition walls 28, 30, 32, which are located one behind the other in the longitudinal direction of the housing. From the pressure chamber 24 a pipe 42 runs into the first mixing chamber 34 and ends at some distance from the partition 28. A supply pipe 44 for gelling agent, with a smaller outer diameter than the inside diameter of the pipe 42, is a little way into the inlet end of this Tube introduced.
A second tube 46 extends longitudinally from the mixing chamber 34 into the mixing chamber 36, is open at both ends and runs through most of these two chambers. A tube 48 with a smaller outer diameter than the inside diameter of the tube 46 extends coaxially from the pressure chamber 24 a short piece into the tube 46. In the same way, the tube 50 connects the next two mixing chambers 36, 38 so that its two open ends in a short distance from the partitions 28 and 32 are located.
A tube 52 of smaller outer diameter than the inside diameter of the tube 50 extends from the pressure chamber 24 without any connection to the mixing chamber 34 a little way into the tube 50. The tube 54 connects the next following mixing chambers 38, 40 in the same way and its two open ends are located at a short distance from the partition 30 and the end wall 25.
A tube 54 of smaller outer diameter than the inside diameter of the tube res 54 extends from the pressure chamber 24 through the partition walls 28 and 30 without any connection to the mixing chambers 34 and 36 and ends coaxially a short distance inside the tube 54. The tubes 42, 46, 50 and 54 have gradually increasing flow areas.
The tubes 58 and 59 connect the pressure chamber 24 to the chamber 34 and a metering device 60 for metering the gelling agent from a storage container (not shown) through the tube 44 is mounted in these tubes. Reference is now also made to FIG. 2 to explain this metering device. The metering device 60 has a chamber 62 to which pressurized water is supplied from the pressure chamber 24 through the pipe 58. The water pressure acts on the piston 64 in the cylinder 66 against a compression spring 67.
The piston carries the piston rod 68, which actuates the fork-shaped rocker arm, which is movably mounted in the holder 70 on pivot pin 71. The rocker arm is provided with a central pin on which a plunger 73 can be axially displaced against the action of a spring 74. The plunger 73 is in a handle with a base 75 which comprises the ends of the slide rod 78 with two arms 76. The slide rod 78 is slidably mounted in the fixedly mounted cylinder 80 in the axial direction.
The cylinder 80 carries a bore 82 which, in the position shown, the slide rod 78 is closed by the tube 59, but corresponds to the drilling 84 when the slide rod is moved into its opposite end position.
The piston 64 carries a further piston rod 86 which is fastened to the piston 88 which is movably supported in the cylinder 90. Cylinder 90 is in communication with the pump housing 91, which is inserted into the flow of the supply line 44. The pump housing 91 is provided with two check valves 92, 94, which allow the gelling agent to flow through the pipe 44 only in the direction of arrow 93.
The device described functions as follows: Pump 16 pumps water into the pressure chamber 24, the excess pressure being set as a function of the required output of the device or of the required spray distance of the aqueous gel. The pressurized water reaches chamber 62 via the pipe 58. The piston 64 has a larger surface area than the piston 88 and thus, as shown in the drawing, moves downward against the pressure of the spring 67.
As a result, the gelling agent present in the pump housing 91 is pressed via the check valve 92 to the outlet opening of the tube 44, which is located in the upper part of the tube 42. During the downward 62 the pressure is reduced, whereby the spring 67 actuates and the plunger 73 is pressed in while the spring 74 is compressed.
At the end of the piston movement, the rocker arm passes through a dead point and snaps into its opposite starting position, the slide rod 78 being moved in such a way that it brings the openings 82 and 84 into line. The chamber 62 is connected via the pipe 59 to the mixing chamber 34, in which there is a lower pressure than in the pressure chamber 24. Thus, the pressure in the chamber 62 is reduced, whereby the spring 67 can overcome the counterpressure in this chamber and the Piston 64 moved upwards.
This moves the pump piston 88 so that a further portion of gelling agent is sucked in through the check valve 94. At the same time, the rocker arm 69 snaps back into the position shown. This process is repeated.
The means for supplying the gelling agent to the first tube 42 can be designed in various ways. The above-described has the advantage that the metering device is only dependent on the pressure difference between pressure chamber 24 and mixing chamber 34 and therefore not on the absolute water pressure in the device. Furthermore, the pump combination 88, 91 works with an efficiency which automatically responds to fluctuations in the water pressure in the pressure chamber 24, whereby the admixture of gelling agent to the water is kept constant.
The pump piston 88 injects the gelling agent discontinuously, but it is possible to have the metering device operate with such an amplitude that the gelling agent flows to the pipe 42 in a more or less continuous stream.
The gelling agent is mixed with the water supplied from the pressure chamber 24 in the tube 42. The mixing ratio can be in the order of magnitude of 1:10. A stirring effect occurs in the pipe 42, so that the two components begin to mix. This mixing and stirring action is then continued when the components emerge from the tube 42 in the opposite direction and into the mixing chamber 34.
During the flow, a continuous mixing of the two components is achieved to a form which can initially have the character of an emulsion. The mixture then flows into the upper end of tube 46 and in the concentric space between the tube and tube 48, which supplies fresh water under the pressure of the pressure chamber 24, downwards.
During the continued downward flow, further mixing and stirring action occurs in the pipe 46, which continues in the mixing chamber 36, so that the content of gelling agent is reduced to approximately 7 wt.
The gel that is then formed flows further downward through pipe 50 into mixing chamber 38, where further dilution by the fresh water supplied from pressure chamber 24 through pipe 52 takes place. During continued turbulent flow, a dilution of the gelling agent to, for example, 5 wtA is achieved.
In the embodiment shown, a fourth mixing with fresh water occurs when the almost finished aqueous gel flows through pipe 54, which is provided with fresh water via pipe 56. In the mixing chamber 40, the aqueous gel then has the desired consistency and a gelling agent content of approximately 3% by weight or less.
According to the method according to the invention, the conversion of water to aqueous gel takes place by gradually diluting the gel that forms, an exceptional end product being obtained and at the same time its production time being reduced so that it is possible to produce the gel at the same speed as the fresh water supplied becomes.
In Fig. 1, the housing 10 has been shown shortened in the axial direction for graphic reasons. In fact, the length of the various Mischkam numbers 34, 36, etc. in relation to the diameter of the housing can be 2 to 3 times the extent shown.
Alternatively, the pump 16 can be connected to the tubing base 26 so that the water is drawn through the device. Also, the tubes and mixing chambers can be arranged side by side in an ordinary housing instead of one behind the other as shown in FIG. The flow cross-sections of the pipes can be adjusted so that the flow velocities of the two components are approximately the same.
