Fig. 1 die Herstellung eines Verbundrohres durch Koppelextrusion,

Article that has been deformed from an original shape and is capable of being deformed back to its original shape by heating
The invention relates to an article with the property mentioned in the title, which is also referred to for short as frozen elasticity (elastic memory), as well as a method for producing the article and a use thereof.
The property of frozen resilience can be imparted to an article by any suitable method. As is known to those skilled in the art, frozen resilient articles are those articles that have been deformed from an original shape and are capable of changing dimensions upon the application of heat and thus regaining their original shape. According to a known method for producing objects with frozen elasticity, a polymer material is first extruded or otherwise brought into a desired shape. The polymeric material is then crosslinked or the properties of a crosslinked material are imparted to it, whether by ultraviolet or high energy radiation, e.g. B. by means of a high energy electron beam or radiation from an atomic pile, or by chemical means, such as. B.
Peroxides or peroxide-like substances when using polyolefins. The crosslinked polymeric material is then heated; deformed and then secured in the deformed state by quenching or other suitable cooling; as an alternative, the same process can also be carried out at room temperature, namely by applying greater force when deforming the polymeric material. The deformed material retains its shape almost indefinitely until it is exposed to a temperature that is above its crystalline melting temperature, i.e. around 120 "C in the case of polyethylene2. A world-famous electrode for the production of articles with frozen elasticity is the subject of American patent 2 027 961.
Yet another method of making such articles is the subject of U.S. Patent 3,086,242 and British Patent No. 990,235, respectively.
For the purposes of the present invention suitable materials are e.g. B. heat-recoverable elastomeric materials such as modified silicone rubber, modified neoprene rubber such as are mentioned in American Patent No. 3,243,211 or British Patent No. 1,010,064. Thus, in general, any material having frozen resilience can be used in the practice of the present invention.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an article which can be reshaped to its original shape by heating and a method of making the article, particularly one which can be incorporated with another article to form a strong, intimate and sealed bond.
The object of the invention is an article which is deformed from an original shape and capable of being deformed back to its original shape by heating, characterized in that it has a first, fusible part and a second part which, when the first, fusible part is not liquid at a sufficient temperature, and that the two parts are intimately bonded to one another.
The invention also relates to a method for producing an article according to the invention, which is characterized in that a first, fusible part is bonded, that the second part is then treated so that it remains solid at the melting temperature of the first part, while the first part melted bar, and that the article is then deformed so that it loses its original shape.
The invention further relates to the use of the article according to the invention for combining with a second article in such a way that the article, with the first, fusible part facing the second article, is arranged in relation to the second article in such a way that it can be heated to it can be brought to be placed close to the second article, and that so much heat is supplied to it that the first, fusible part comes into tight connection with the second article.
The first, fusible and second part of the article are expediently joined together so that the article is a one-piece structure and the bond between the two parts does not break when the article is heated to return it to its original shape. It is clear that the materials of the two parts joined together must have a high degree of compatibility if such an intimate bond is to be achieved, and that one must then also use an appropriate method for producing the bond, e.g. B, a fusion process. Such a bond can z. B. obtained by joining polyethylene and polypropylene when they are in a liquid (molten) or semi-liquid state.
The two parts are preferably connected to one another by means of coupling extrusion (composite extrusion) at an elevated temperature at which melting occurs. Such an intimate bond can also be brought about by chemical means.
According to a preferred embodiment of the production method, the first, fusible and the second part are combined by coupling fusion before the second part is made heavier or not fusible. The article is then z. B. treated by irradiation or chemical agents so that the second part is crosslinked to such an extent that it remains solid at the melting temperature of the first part. Then, according to this embodiment, the frozen elasticity is imparted to at least the second part. Preferably, the article is extruded into roll form, then irradiated, the tube expanded and quenched at the same time.
However, you can also produce a flat sheet and stretch it uniaxially or biaxially and scrape it off in the stretched state. The flat sheet can be extruded as such or it can be produced by slitting an extruded tube. More finely, the article can be made by compression molding rather than extrusion.
For example, the material of the second part can be of very high molecular weight, having gel constitution and frozen elasticity, e.g. B.
Polytetrafluoroethylene. The article can be provided with a reinforcing material, e.g. B. with knitted or braided textile material. The first fusible part of the article can form an outer surface or the entire outer surface of the article. In the case of tubular articles, the first fusible part can form the inside or outside or both sides.
The article can be used to laminate, encapsulate, cover, etc. an object; For this purpose, it is brought into such a position in relation to the object that the deformation of the article when it is heated presses the first, fusible part of the article against the article - so that a bond occurs with it. The article is then preferably heated to such an extent that the first, meltable part becomes liquid; this creates a secure, intimate and impermeable bond between the article and the object.
You can give the article a shape that corresponds to the shape of the object to which it is to be attached. However, the article can also simply be designed as a tape that can be wrapped around the other object.
In the following the article of the invention will be explained according to a method for its production with reference to the drawing, for example, showing:
1 shows the production of a composite pipe by coupling extrusion,
2 shows the product produced according to the method according to FIG. 1 in cross section and
Fig. 3 shows an example of the entire manufacturing process in which the article, extruded in tubular form, irradiated, expanded and quenched in order to give it the property of frozen elasticity.
Fig. 1 shows the production of the composite pipe 1 by coupling extrusion of polymeric materials 2 and 3. The extruder 4 is shown schematically.
FIG. 2 shows the composite pipe 1 produced by the method according to FIG. 1, which, although it is an inseparable structure, consists of two parts 5, 6 with different properties. The outer part 5, that is the aforementioned second part, is also referred to below as the relatively infusible part and the inner part 6, that is the aforementioned first part, is also referred to as the relatively fusible part. The relatively fusible part could also form the outside of the tube 1.
According to the preferred embodiment, the part 5 is made relatively infusible by crosslinking, preferably by irradiation. Since such radiation is carried out after the tube 1 has been formed, the part 5 must be crosslinked by an irradiation dose which, however, must not be sufficient to render the part 6 infusible. This can be achieved in a number of ways, e.g. B. by suitable adjustment of the initial molecular weight or the molecular weight distribution.
It is known that both the molecular weight of polyethylene and its distribution have a great influence on the leading to infusibility
Exercise dose (see Lawton et al, Ind. Eng. Chem. 46,
1703, 1954). Thus, when using polyethylene, the desired crosslinking properties of parts 5 and 6 can be achieved by appropriately setting these molecular weight characteristics. Practical limits, expressed in terms of melt index values, in relation to the molecular weight of polyethylene are as follows: the relatively infusible part ¯ about 0.3 or less; Relatively fusible part approx. 20 or higher.
Anti-wheels can also be used to regulate the infusibility. These materials, when incorporated into polymers, act by chemical means to prevent crosslinking of the polymers, e.g. B. by free radical reactions. Some thermal antioxidants for olefin polymers act as strong anti-wheels. Thus, the incorporation of a thermal antioxidant in the relatively fusible part serves d-a-r'dpelten function, firstly to ensure that this part reaches the point of infusibility during irradiation, and secondly to protect the polymer against thermal degradation.
Of course, other materials that are not anti-oxidants also act as anti-wheels. An example of a thermal antioxidant antioxidant wheel for polyolefins is 4,4'-thiobis (6-tert-butyl-m-cresol). Further examples are: 4,4'-methylenebis (2-tert-butyl-phenol). 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol, 4,4'-butylidenebis (6-tert-butyl-m-cresol), 2,5-di- (tert-amyl) -hydroquinone. Examples of anti-wheels that are not anti-oxidants are pentabromophenol, naphthylene, copper stearate.
Among the various polymer materials that can be used to achieve the objects of the present invention are polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon, fluorinated ethylene-propylene polymers, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene fluoride, and acrylic polymers. In general, any polymeric materials can be used to form the relatively infusible part 5 which are crosslinkable by irradiation or chemical means and capable of forming a material with frozen elasticity. In addition, materials of very high molecular weight can also be used, which still have a strength above the
Have crystalline melting temperature and are able to have a frozen elasticity.
Furthermore, combinations of materials can also be used to form the article of the invention. It is important that the composite materials be capable of forming such an intimate bond with one another that a single integral structure is created as described above. So z. B.
Polyethylene and polypropylene can be used together.
The relatively infusible portion of the article is generally created in a manner similar to that of the relatively fusible portion, except that it comprises a material that reaches the point of infusibility at radiation doses that are insufficient to make the relatively fusible portion function to initiate. Thus, a material with a higher molecular weight than the relatively fusible part can be used, or crosslinking agents, such as e.g. B. polymerizable comonomers are added. Examples of such crosslinking agents are divinylbenzene, polybutadiene, allyl methacrylate, divinyl succinate, ethylene glycol diacrylate, diallyl fumarate, triallyl phosphate, triallyl cyanurate.
These agents promote crosslinking at low doses of radiation in the relatively infusible part, in particular when using polyolefins and polyvinyl halides.
It is thus clear that by using an anti-wheel and / or regulating the molecular weight in the relatively fusible part and / or by using a crosslinking agent and / or regulating the molecular weight in the relatively infusible part, it is possible to produce an article which, although it is a single integral structure, it has different melting characteristics in different parts.
The relatively fusible portion then acts to form a strong, impermeable and intimate bond with an object to which the article is being affixed under heating, and the relatively infusible portion then acts as a strong, intimately bonded coating or carrier. It is of course also possible to incorporate fillers, flame retardants, etc. into the relatively narrow, -dem ¯ ril tlv unso fusible part, or both parts, if this is desirable for a particular purpose.
It is also possible to obtain additional strength at high temperatures and / or chemical bonding by incorporating a material into the relatively fusible part of the article which is capable of chemically crosslinking or vulcanizing the relatively fusible part and which effects the crosslinking of this part, when the article is heated so that it binds to another object. This can also be done by overheating the relatively fusible part with said material.
Fig. 3 shows the preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention in schematic form.
The article 1 is ejected from the composite extruder 4 and then transferred to the chamber 7 which contains an electron generator 8. The extruded article runs on rollers 9 through the electron beam of the generator 8, which can be a 2 million EV Van-der-Graaf electron accelerator. When using polyethylene, suitable radiation doses are approx.
5-15 megarads, depending on the material properties, but other doses can also be used.
After the irradiation, the article moves into the expansion apparatus, in which it is fed to a pair of pinch rollers 11 via feed rollers 10. A tank 12 contains a heating means 13. A pressure difference, e.g. B. positive pressure or vacuum acts on the article as it passes between the rollers 10, 11 in order to expand it. After leaving the heating means 13, the expanded article is quenched by a cooling mold 14 and then z. B. recorded on a roll.
The following example illustrates the invention.

Using the extrusion apparatus of Fig. 1, a relatively infusible outer member comprised of 59.85% high density polyethylene (Hifax "1400E from Hercules Powder Co. with a melt index of 0.6) was made 19.4% polyethylene medium density, melt index 1.0 (Spencer 2504 of Spencer Chemical Co.), 7 o / o antimony oxide 2.4 o / o trillylcyanurate, 0.4 & PbO.PbC2. H2 (COO) r. 2Ho0 (Lector 78 of the National Lead Co.), 0.8 O / o 4,4'-thiobis- (6-tert-butyl-m-cresol), 0.2 O / o petrolatum, 0,
1 o / o finely divided silica (Cab-O-Sil from Godfrey L. Cabot Inc.) and 9.85 o / o tetrabromophthalic anhydride with a relatively fusible inner part, extruded as a composite with the following components; 17.5 kg low density polyethylene, melt index 22 (Alathon 17 from E.I. du Pont de Nemours Co.), 3.84 kg polyethylene (Tenite 812 from Eastaman Chemical Products Inne.) Low density (melt index 200 + 30). 1.3 kg of antimony oxide and 0.227 kg of 4,4'-thiobis (6th tert-butyl-m-cresol) to form a single integral tubular article.
This had an inside diameter of approx. 1.02 mm, a wall thickness of approx. 0.975 mm of the relatively fusible part and a wall thickness of approx. 1.98 mm of the relatively infusible part. The tube was then irradiated in a 2 MEV electron accelerator at a dose of 10 M [egarad. The irradiated tube was then expanded in a bath of approx. 171 ° C. according to the method according to American patent 3,086,242, the internal diameter increasing to approx. 8.5 mm. A pressure of approx. 0.7 kg / cm2 was applied to the inside of the pipe and of 0.55 kg / cm2 to the outside, and the feed rate was 1.5 m per minute.
The inner diameter of a pin provided with an opening, through which the tube exited the bath, was 6.3 mm and that of the cooling mold was 10.7 mm.
The 4,4'-thiobis- (6-tert-butyl-m-cresol) was used in the relatively infusible part as an antioxidant.
It will be understood that the article made in accordance with the present invention can be formed in a variety of shapes and used for virtually any covering, lamination, or association. It can be designed so that it expands or contracts when heated. Is z. If, for example, the relatively fusible part of the article is formed as the outer wall of a tubular member and the relatively infusible part is formed as the inner wall thereof, the present article can be used for lining pipes and the like.
Of the many and varied uses of the present article, the following are mentioned here: joining several pieces of metal and / or plastic, joining several pipe or rod pieces or combinations thereof, attaching castors to chair legs, sealing bottle closures or lids on other containers, forming of moisture-proof coverings on one or more objects, forming a chemically resistant layer for one or more objects, and laminations in general. Further, the article of the invention can be used for splicing, encapsulating, etc. electrical parts.
Although the dressing extrusion is described in the above description, the article according to the invention can also be produced by other methods, e.g. B. compression molding are generated. In all cases it is, of course, necessary that the materials used are capable of forming an article which is a single integral structure. A reinforcing material can also be added to the relatively infusible or relatively fusible part or to both parts. Furthermore, the relatively fusible part of the article can have the property of frozen elasticity. Is z. B. Unterwor fen an article before expanding, it is nothing unusual if the relatively fusible part of the end product has a certain frozen elasticity.
The term relatively infusible part used in the description means that this part does not become so at a temperature at which the relatively fusible part becomes essentially liquid.
