Method of manufacturing a wick serving as as an inscription member The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a wick serving writing device for writing, drawing or marking instrument, according to which textile fibers are agglomerated by means of a synthetic resin.
Several processes are known for the agglomeration of fibers, or of threads formed from these fibers, with a view to obtaining locks serving as a writing organ.
According to one of these methods, the fibers or yarns to be agglomerated are partially melted by moderate heating.
According to another of these processes, a partial dissolution of the fibers or yarns is carried out by immersing them in a bath of suitable solvent.
According to a third process, the fibers or the threads are glued together by means of a synthetic resin in solution in a solvent.
These known methods and the method forming the subject of the present invention make it possible to obtain wicks that are thin enough (of the order of 1 mm in diameter) and rigid enough to be able to be cut to a point at their end intended for contact with the writing support. These wicks have the appearance of pencil leads and allow fine -and regular writing .comparable to that obtained by means of stylograph nibs or well-sharpened pencils, while requiring only a limited pressure force .and especially in allowing you to write on a smooth as well as a rough substrate which is not possible with metallic pen nibs.
The method forming the subject of the present invention is characterized in that a bundle of either textile fibers or yarns formed from these fibers is passed continuously through a fluidized bed of powder of at least one synthetic resin, so that it takes care of .particles thereof, and that one heats to a temperature between 140 and 260 C, the beam thus -charged by making it simultaneously pass to through dies of appropriate opening, so as to obtain, by agglomeration, a wick of uniform structure and diameter.
The textile fibers or the yarns formed from texti fibers which can be -employed are either continuous fibers or staple fibers, gathered into yarns or rovings according to conventional spinning processes.
It should be noted that it is preferable that the assembly of fibers or yarns forming the bundle is such that the individual fibers or yarns have a count of between 1.5 and 20 denier. The number of these fibers or threads corresponds to the diameter, the bundle of threads from which we start must comprise from 1000 to 7000 individual strands.
The fibers used can be natural, artificial or synthetic, but it is the synthetic fibers which present the most advantages, in particular because they are not liable to react with inks and because their structure is the most regular.
The resins which can be used are of the thermosetting type, such as melamine resins, phenolic resins, urea-formaldehyde resins and acrylic resins, or of the thermoplastic type such as cellulose acetate, vinyl chloride and polystyrene, or a mixture of these two categories of resin, this mixture being made in proportions chosen so as to combine the advantages of these two types of resin.
In order to obtain a certain porosity even inside the resin particles, it is sometimes advantageous to use a filled resin. Such a filled resin can be obtained either by mixing a thermosetting resin, for example a formalin-phenol resin of the resol type, with microcrystallized cellulose, or by melting a thermosetting resin in the presence of particles of a suitable nature.
The latter way of preparing a filled resin applies, for example, to formalin-phenol resins of the novolak type. In this case, it comprises the following succession of operations: Melting of the resin in the presence of the filler which is distributed uniformly; cooling and crushing of the mass thus obtained. The pieces are ground to a fine powder which, after adding the desired amount of catalyst (which is most often hexamethylenetetramine), serves as a fluidized bed.
As filler, it is possible, in the first case, that where one proceeds by simple mixing, to use cellulose particles, as has been indicated. In the second case, the particles incorporated into the resin consist of inert mineral fillers such as silica gel, talc, zinc oxide, titanium oxide, etc. It is obvious that mixtures of such fillers can optionally be employed.
The particle size of the resin powder is chosen so as, on the one hand, to allow fluidization, and, on the other hand, to be suitable for the entrainment of a desired quantity of particles by the beam, particles of dimensions suitable for obtaining the desired porosity in the wick manufactured by the process.
The course of the various operations necessary for the implementation of the method is explained below with the aid of the single figure of the appended drawing which represents schematically and by way of example a form of arrangement of the installation allowing the execution of these operations.
The threads or fibers constituting the reserve of fibrous material in the wick are wound in a spool 1. A drive system 2 located at the final end of the device ensures the unwinding of the bundle 3, formed in this case by threads. , and its successive passage through a device 4 intended to place said beam 3 flat and then, by means of a system of pulleys 5 and 5 ', in a fluidized bed 6 of resin.
It is necessary to ensure that the tension of the various son forming the bundle 3 is the same in order to avoid, at the entry in the dies, a formation of knots which could result in a blocking and a rupture of the bundle or some- some of the threads that compose it.
The fluidized bed 6 is obtained by the known method, that is to say by blowing air through the drilled bottom 10 of the container containing the resin.
A device 7, placed downstream of the fluidized bed, and consisting of a vibrating system, makes it possible to drop back into the bed or to eliminate any excess of particles so as to keep in the bundle only the necessary quantity of powder. .
The beam then passes through one or more dies 8 and 8 'intended to determine their diameter and simultaneously passes through a tubular electric furnace 9 which is arranged vertically in the installation shown schematically in the drawing but which may, of course, have a other arrangement in any equivalent istallation, for example the horizontal arrangement. The heating effect can be obtained in any other way, for example by hot air or by infrared radiation lamps. Heating can be carried out in one or more operations.
The temperature and the duration of the heating are determined so that the hardened resin while sticking to the bundle, in the case of thermoset resins sands, or softens, in the case of thermoplastic resins, which obviously also ensures an effect. bonding, without the fibers constituting the material of the bundle being affected. In the case of the use of a thermosetting resin, the shaping of the wick is carried out at the start of heating during which the resin begins by softening which allows, by passing through one or more opening dies appropriate, to give the bit the desired final diameter. Continuation of the heating then ensures the hardening of the resin which gave the wick its final mechanical properties.
When a thermoplastic resin is used, the shaping of the wick takes place during heating, in the same way as in the case of a thermosetting resin, but the curing only occurs on cooling.
A strand of fibrous structure is thus obtained comprising a set of channels all oriented in the same general direction, in the longitudinal direction of the strand. These channels communicate partially with each other and are partially filled with particles or clusters of solidified particles.
The main advantage that the process according to the present invention presents over the known processes is that it is easily possible to obtain a very even distribution of the solid particles binding the fibers in the wick obtained, thanks to the great homogeneity that the can be imparted to the fluidized bed.
A fluidized bed consisting of particles of desired and uniform coarse size therefore makes it possible, more easily than in the other processes, to manufacture wicks of homogeneous and desired porosity and to maintain a regular production of wicks of constant porosity.
The following examples show the implementation of the method using the installation described.
Example 1 The textile fiber used is nylon 6,6 in the form of an assembly of 107 threads, multilobed, shiny, 140 denier, 34 strands and the resin is a thermoplastic resin which is a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer having a particle size such that 62% of the powder remains on the 170 mesh screen. Heat to 220 C and adjust the pulling speed to 1 m per minute,
so that the wire bundle is heated for 1 to 2 minutes. A rigid wick is obtained having a homogeneous structure and good resistance to abrasion.
Example 2 The textile fiber is nylon 6,6 cabled as in Example 1 and the resin is a phenolic thermosetting resin whose softening point is close to 140 C and the melting point is of 160 C. The setting of the oven is such that the melting temperature of the resin in the vicinity of the dies is not exceeded, in order to avoid too rapid hardening of the wick during its passage through the oven. The final hardening is carried out by subsequent heating, after removal from the oven, to 200 C. The speed of travel of the beam is 1 m / minute.
Example 3 With tergal, used in the form of an assembly of 139 threads, multilobed, shiny, 130 denier, and constituted by 66 strands, and a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer which is a thermoplastic resin,
the particle size of which is such that 15% of this resin remains in the 200 mesh sieve and the softening point of which is 150 C, it is heated to 180 C by making the beam scroll at a speed of 2-3 m / minute. you. Example 4 With wired tergal as in example 3,
and a thermosetting phenolic resin which is in the form of fine particles (18 to 20 u) and which contains 9.8 to 11.2% hexamethylene tetramine as a catalyst, the heating temperature of the furnace is adjusted in such a way. to reach a temperature of 225 C at the height of the dies and 140 C at the exit of the oven. The pulling speed of the wick is 1 m / minute.
Example 5 With the crylor and the resin used in Example 1, the heating temperature of the oven is 220 C. Example 6 With the crylor and the resin used in Example 2, the heating temperature of the oven is 150 C. Subsequent heating to 200 C. allows the final hardening.
Example 7 With the nylon, used in Examples 1 and 2, and an epoxy resin, thermosetting, the oven is heated to 215 C and the final hardening is obtained by subsequent heating to 240 C, at the exit from the channels. Example 8 The same fibers are passed as in Example 1, through a fluidized bed consisting of a mixture of 240 g of thermosetting phenolic resin, the softening point of which is of the order of 140 C and the melting point is 160 C and 120 g of microcrystallized cellulose powder. The stretching speed is 1.6 m / minute and the vertical furnace is heated to 215 C at its lower part and 210 C at its upper part. The diameter of the die is 1.8 mm.
The wicks obtained bare have a very homogeneous porosity and easily reproducible.
The bits obtained by this process are hard enough not to wear out appreciably during the normal life of the writing instruments of which they are part and to be shaped, for example cut to a point, but they retain a certain flexibility allowing them to be wound on large diameter coils. They have a certain elasticity which makes it possible to write on surfaces which are relatively sensitive to tearing, such as paper, without causing a hole even when you press down quite firmly while writing on these surfaces.
