Curtain wall for high buildings The present invention relates to a curtain wall for high buildings, particularly one with improved means for connecting horizontal U-shaped steel lintels with vertical support posts, improved means for supporting curtain wall panels within the frame, and improved means for preventing intrusion of water through a joint between adjacent support posts in a wall column.
In modern architecture, the use of curtain walls is desirable for reasons of economy, simplicity, appearance and ease of construction. Curtain walls allow the architect to use both fixed glass and movable windows on the outside of the building at an affordable cost.
The frame members of the curtain walls used today are primarily made of aluminum. However, stainless steel is also suitable and in some ways offers a better construction. However, it was difficult, if not impossible, to use stainless steel in frames for curtain walls because of the manufacturing difficulty in the workshop or in assembly on the construction site. The present invention avoids this problem entirely.
In known curtain walls, the frame menglieder .ein recessing or covering either the horizontal or the vertical members, or both, in order to establish a connection between them. The act of trimming the frame members to create the necessary notch for making the connections added significantly to the cost of the frame members. The high cost of notching or covering a hard metal such as
Stainless steel, the practice limited the technique to the use of soft metals such as e.g. B. aluminum.
By eliminating the difficult notching or notching process and by using the new means of connecting the horizontal and vertical members, it is now economically practical and permissible to use stainless steel in the construction of the frame members.
Known curtain walls have had the problem of water seeping through the wall at the joints of the support posts in a vertical column. Such water has been found to migrate along the lower ends of the posts either in heavy rain or by capillary action.
Two embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the drawing, namely: Fig. 1 and la isometric a first example, namely Fig. 1 the upper, and Fig. La the lower half, where AA represents the dividing line of the two figures and one upper solid wall panel and a lower glass panel are only shown in dashed lines for the sake of clarity, FIG. 2 shows a vertical cross section along the line 11-II in FIG.
wherein the solid wall panel and the glass wall panel are drawn in full, Fig. 3 is a horizontal section along the line III-III of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a horizontal section along the line IV-IV of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 in side view Support posts connected in a vertical column with the panels removed to illustrate an example of a watertight connection,
Fig. 6 is a horizontal section along the line VI-VI in Fig. 5 and Fig. 7 axonometrically a second example of the connection Ver connection of the end of the horizontal U-shaped box girder or lintel with the vertical support post.
The curtain wall according to FIGS. 1 and la has a massive blackboard 12, only shown in dot-dash lines, and a blackboard 14 in glass, also shown in dot-dash lines. These two panels are supported by a frame, a part of which is shown in FIGS. 1 and 1a as adjacent vertical posts of a column and a horizontal U-beam or lintel 20.
As can be seen from Fig. 1a, the post 16 has a pair of U-members 16a, 16b, which was held by a vertical reinforcement plate 16c in mutual distance and are locked together by inwardly angled and interlocking edges 16d, 16d ' provided on the front and back of the links 16a and 16b, respectively.
The design of the center posts 16a, 16b together with the sheet metal 16c creates front cavities 16e, 16f and rear cavities 16g, 16h. Each of the posts has outwardly directed, vertically extending side recesses or channels 16k, 16m, which are true to receive vertical wall panels such as 12, 12 'and 14, 14' (Fig. 4). The post 18 and the other posts in the wall frame can be designed similarly.
The horizontal U-lintel 20 is intended to receive in the vertical recess 16m of the post 16 when assembling the frame members, the lintel 20 being held in such a post 16 by trot and connecting links, which are described in detail below.
The lintel 20 consists of a number of rigidly interconnected elements, namely a horizontal member 20a with a downwardly directed front flange 20b and an upwardly directed rear flange 20c, which two flanges are connected to one another by a horizontal web 20d.
The lintel 20 has an elongated bracket 20e, or a number of such, which extends vertically over the web 20d and is connected to the front flange 20b by rivets 20f, together with a further bracket 20g, which is also connected to the web 20d by rivets 20h (Fig. La) is connected. The brackets 20e, 20g carry board holders 22, 24, which are described in detail below.
As shown in FIGS. 1a, 2 and 3, the end of the main link 20a is received in the side post recess 16m.
The front of the front flange 20b slidably engages a front 16n of the recess 16m, and the rear flange 20c has a rear side that slidably engages: a rear side 16p of the recess 16m, thus sliding the link 20 forward or backward relative to the post 16 prevented.
The posts 16 and 18 are connected to the posts 20 to prevent vertical displacement therebetween by means which releasably connect the posts and lintels and allow expansion and contraction between them. As can be seen from Fig. La, 2 and 3,
such means for connecting one end of a link to a vertical post 16 or 18 have a pair of laterally offset pins 26, each of which slidably engages a lower side of the web 20d, along with a pin disposed over the pin 26 28 which slidably grips and holds a top of the web 20d.
The main link. 20a has an opposite end portion (not shown) which is similarly connected to a post (not shown) in another, adjacent column of the wall frame.
The pins 26 carry the weight at the end of the lintel 20, and the pin 28 keeps the lintel 20 from moving upward. The pins 26 can pass through the post members 16a, 16b and the stiffening plate 16c with a fine fit and reach into the other post recess 16k (FIG. 3) in order to accommodate another lintel 20 '.
After the lintel 20 is placed on the pin 26 and supported by this, the pin 28 is pushed through the opening 28, the post members 16a, 16b and the stiffening plate 16c put through so as to hold this lintel 20 and its vertical displacement prevent. The pin 28 protrudes into both adjacent recesses 16k, 16m (FIG. 3) in order to simultaneously and releasably prevent a vertical displacement of the lintels 20 received in such recesses in the assembled position. The pin 28 can be removed when removing the lintels or when they are damaged.
This means also allows an expansion and contraction of the lintels 20, the length of which is slightly less than the distance between adjacent pillars of the posts 16 or 18, measured from the bottoms of the recesses, so that between at least one of the lintel ends and a corresponding post a gap 20 (Fig. 3) is formed. Accordingly, when the main lintel member 20a is expanded or contracted, the web 20d is placed on the pin 26,
28 slide and thus no inadmissible tension is exerted in the wall frame. The length of the pin 28 protruding into the recess 16m and carrying one end of the lintel 20 is greater than the space 30.
Such means can also include other designs, e.g. B. that for connecting the main lintel member 20a to the post 16, as shown in FIG. The post member 16b may have laterally spaced apart, expressed portions 16q that support the lintel 20 by slidably gripping the lower side of the web 20d.
Further, an upwardly recessed spring tab 16r can be expressed from the post member 16b which has enough resilience to be pressed inwardly against the center of the post 16 so that the end of the main lintel member 20a can pass over it and then snap across the top of the lintel bar 20d can, if this is pushed past the tab and supported on parts 16q.
The lower end of the tab 16r is vertically offset from the top of the expressed parts 16q so that when the end of the main lintel member 20a is pushed past the tab 16r, the tabs 16q slide onto the underside of the web 20d and the protruding tab 16r slides on the top of the web 20d. Thus, one end of the main lintel member 20a can be connected to another post (not shown) and then the other end can be snapped into a connection with the post 16.
Of course, the expressed vaulting parts 16q and 16r can be replaced by elements that can be separated from posts and attached to this e.g. B. can be fastened by screws or rivets.
It should also be pointed out that both types of connections (Fig. 1a) and 7) allow rapid dismantling of the lintel 20, should such be required. When disassembling the Zapfenverbin extension of the pin 28 is flush with the bottom of the recess 16m, and a similar pin driven flush into a post in an adjacent column, whereupon the lintel 20 can be lifted out. The same procedure can be used for the connection according to FIG. 7,
only the projecting tab 16r. and a similar tab on a post in the adjacent column are pushed inward until the lintel 20 can be lifted.
Either connection allows the lintel 20 to be connected to the post 16 and another post in an adjacent column without changing the cross-section of the main lintel member 20a. This simplifies the construction of the latter, since no notches have to be made in order to establish its connec tion with the post.
The panels 12, 14 are held on the lintels 20 by elongated holders 22, 24 (FIGS. 1 a and 2). The board holder 22 can be provided with a number of drainage holes.
The board holder 22 can have inwardly bent edges 22a, 22b that are vertically offset from one another, the upper edge 22b engaging behind the upper edge of the clamp 20e. The holder 22 can be made of a sufficiently thin material since its edge 22b can engage behind the upper edge of the clamp 20e when the holder 22 is in such a position that its lower edge 22a engages behind the lower edge of the front flange 20b.
The board holder 24 has an inwardly curved lower edge 24a, which engages behind a forwardly curved lower edge of the bracket 20g, and a forwardly curved upper edge 24b which engages behind an upper bent edge of the bracket 20g. The board holder 24 can be designed in the same way as the board holder 22, so that it can be assembled with a bracket 20g.
The board holder 22 has an elongated horizon tal slot 22c and a rearward edge 22d. Either the slot 22c or the edge 22d can be used to receive a sealing washer which supports the panel 12 and secures it against the weather.
In FIG. 1 a, a seal 34 is dovetailed to the edge 22d and is in frictional connection with a front side of the panel 12. The lintel main member 20a has an inwardly folded part 20j on the upper part of the rear flange 20c which is against a Back of panel 12 so that gasket 34 and part 20j together support and hold the lower end of panel 12.
The post member 16b has an elongated slot 16s and 16t at the front and rear (FIGS. 1a and 3) and an edge 16v and 16w similar to the board holder 22 for supporting and holding the sides of the boards 12 and 14.
In Fig. 3, an elongated device 36 is dovetail-like ver with the edge 16v connected and holds the front of the panel 12 in frictional engagement, and another seal 38 sits dovetail-like in the elongated slot 16t and holds the back of the panel 12 in the frictional connection both seals 36, 38 support and hold the vertical end of the panel 12 together.
The other vertical end (not shown) of panel 12, as well as the top end thereof (not shown), may be supported in a similar manner.
Holding and weather securing means can also be provided for the lower panel 14 in a manner similar to that for the upper panel 12. The board holder 24 can thus be provided with an elongated slot 24c and a long edge 24d. In the example according to FIG. 2, a seal 40 is inserted in the manner of a dovetail into the slot 24c and lies on the back of the panel 14 with a frictional connection.
A further seal 42 is connected in a dovetail fashion to the inwardly folded panel-holding edge 22a and lies snugly on the front of the panel 14. Accordingly, the two seals 40, 42 together support the upper end of the panel 14.
As shown in FIG. 4, an elongated vertical board holder 44 has a forwardly directed edge 44a, a laterally protruding wall 44 ', offset to the rear from the front indentation side 16n, to form a frame for receiving the board 14, and a laterally offset, rear loop edge 44b.
The forward edge 44a engages the post member 16b in a longitudinal slot 16x, and the loop edge 44b engages the post member 16b in the longitudinal slot 16t so that the panel holder 44 is easily and releasably connected to the post member 16b. The board holder 44 can be made of stainless steel or plastic so that the loop edge 44b can be snapped into the elongated slot 16t after the holder edge 44a is in the elongated groove 16x. the post member 16b is united.
As is further shown in Fig. 4, an elongated, vertical seal 46 is dovetail-like connected to an edge 44c of the board holder 44.and rests with frictional engagement on the back of the glass panel 14. Furthermore, another elongated, vertical sealing strip 48 is dovetail-like is connected to the longitudinal slot 16s and lies with a frictional connection on a front side of the panel 14. The two sealing strips 46, 48 together support the vertical edge of the panel 14.
A second glass panel 14 'is supported in the same way against the post 16a abge.
All seals are made of a material suitable for holding and sealing the panels on the weather side, such as B. vinyl, synthetic rubber or even metal. Each seal can be a single long strip.
It should be noted that the described means for retaining and supporting the panels 12 and 14 in members 16 or 18 and 20 eliminates the need for notching or disengaging the main lintel members 20a or post portion 16. The links 20a and 16 can be fabricated in conventional processes and only need to be cut to the correct length. This simplifies the manufacture of the links in the workshop prior to assembly on the construction site and largely reduces costs.
It is important to note that the lintel main member 20a is received in the lintel recess 16m, and the gasket 36 bridges the thickness of the front flange 20b and protrudes over it to lie on the front of the panel 12, and that the gasket 38 spans the inward extent of the inwardly folded edge 20j to lie on the back of the panel 12. Likewise, the seal 48 bridges the thickness of the front flange 20b and extends beyond this to lie on the front of the glass wall panel 14, and the seal 46 together with the panel holder 44 bridges the transverse dimension of the panel holder 24 to be on the rear the glass wall panel 14 to lay.
As a result of this dimensioning of the sealing strips, the post 16 does not need to be changed in its transverse direction by notching or notching in order to hold the two panels 12, 14 and to seal them on the weather side.
As is further shown in FIG. 4, instead of the stiffening plate 16c, a reinforcing member 16c ′ of generally I-beam cross-section can be used to separate the two post members 16a, 16b along the glass wall panel 14.
In known curtain wall structures, hollow post profiles are connected to each other by means of sleeves. It is desirable to leave a space between adjacent posts to allow for expansion and intermediate drawings after he direct the curtain wall.
As shown in Figures 1 and 5, the upper end 16y of the post 16 is offset from the lower end 18y of the upper post so that the two posts 16, 18 can expand.
A sleeve 50 sits snugly on the inside of the two cavities 18e, 18f at the ends of the posts and bridges the gap between the two posts 16, 18 and says into the post spaces 16e, 16f. The sleeve 50 is in the hollow spaces 18e, 18f fixed, for. B. by welding, and is sealed against the post inside forming these spaces, for.
B. by means of a sealant between the sleeve edge and post. The sleeve 50 slidably grips the post 16 within the cavities 16e, 16f. No seal is provided between the sleeve 50 and the lower post 16 so that water can drain down into the cavities 16e, 16f.
When the two post sections 16, 18 are expanded or contracted, the sleeve 50 slides in the post 16. Water that has penetrated into the front post interiors 18e, 18f passes through the sleeve 50 and cannot penetrate the building.
As shown in Fig. 1, 5 and 6, a longitudinal U-shaped sealing member 52 is fixed to the Pfo most 18 within the post indentation 18m a related party, for. B. by means of rivets 52a, and is against this, for. B. sealed by sealant. The lower part of this organ 52 is slidably inserted into the post indentation 16m.
When expanding or contracting the post 16, 18 then slides the member 52 relative to the post within the post indentation 16m. Another sealing member is connected in the same way to the post 18 within the post recess 18k. and is slidable relative to the post 16 within the post indentation 16k.
These sealing members 52 prevent water from penetrating into the building from the indentations 16k, 16m and 18k, 18m.
The sleeves 50 and sealing members 52 prevent most of the water from entering the building, but nevertheless some of the water could penetrate into the space between the post ends 16y, 18y through an opening 54 (FIG. 5) and a same opening on the opposite side of the posts,
this water drains on the back of the sleeve 50 until it reaches a point 56 (Fig. 6). There the water can then penetrate into the space between the posts 18, 16 located behind the point 56. If this water is not stopped, it can seep further into the building.
The penetration of water along the upper post end 16y behind the point 56 was prevented by a special shape of the post members 16a, 16b. The upper end of this post 16 thus receives a surface 16z (Fig. 5) which is inclined downward against the front side of the curtain wall.
The infiltration of water along the lower end 18y of the upper post 18 is prevented by a special shape of the lower end 18y. As shown in Figure 5, a portion of this end 18y and 18y 'is notched and thus forms a sharp change in the slope of the lower end 18y at' 18y '.
Length of the front horizontal part of the end 18y migrating water drips from the end 18y after reaching the point 18y "and on to the surface 16z and the top of the stiffening plate 16c, where after it can then pull off through the post cavities 16e, 16f.
In the example according to FIG. 5, the notch 18y 'provides a change in inclination of about 19 at 18y ". The degree of change in inclination of the bottom end 18y can be less than 90, depending on the parameters to be taken into account in the design expected wind forces, the amount of rainwater and the capillary action, the change in inclination at 18y "should be of the kind
that water running backwards along the lower end 18y drips off after reaching the point 18y 'and falls into the spaces underneath.
The holder 22 has a number of water drainage holes 22e (FIG. 2), as does the clip 20e at 20e '. Through these holes drains water that has accumulated due to condensation or otherwise in the vicinity of the Hal age 22 or the bracket 20e.
As shown in Fig. 1, 5 and 6, the post 18 is part by an anchor 62 rigidly with a solid construction, for. B. a concrete slab 60 connected. The post anchor 62 is on the plate 60, for. B. by means of. Bolts 64 and an insert 66 fastened and penetrated the rear of the post part 18b (Fig. 6). The anchor 62 is z. B. by means of rivets 62a (Fig. 6) attached to the two post parts 18a, 18b.
The lower end of the stiffening plate 18c can sit directly on the upper end of the post anchor 62 (FIG. 5). The post 16 and the other posts in the curtain wall frame can be supported in the same manner on each floor of the building.
It can now be clearly seen that the present invention has greatly simplified the components of a curtain wall and has provided means which allow quick and easy assembly. This has been achieved without compromising the rigidity of the curtain or the waterproofing of the same.
