Device for determining the water vapor permeability of foils
The invention relates to a device for the experimental determination of the water vapor permeability of films. The determination of the water vapor permeability is particularly important for films that are to be used for packaging.
The measurement is based on a volumetric method. The test specimen is placed as a partition between two rooms with different water vapor partial pressure in air from the pressure of the external atmosphere and the increase in volume in equilibrium with the atmospheric pressure in the measuring chamber compartment of the lower water vapor partial pressure is monitored.
The function of the increase in the volume of this measuring chamber compartment caused by the water vapor passing through the test object as a function of time is a measure of the water vapor permeability of this test object.
Previously known devices for determining the water vapor permeability are mainly based on gravimetric methods. The test item is fixed on a dish, which contains a desiccant, usually with a potting compound, for example paraffin.
This shell is then exposed to a constant, constant water vapor partial pressure which is precisely known and the increase in weight of the entire shell as a result of absorption of water vapor which passes through the test specimen over time is determined by periodic weighing. As a result of the weight ratio of the desiccant-filled bowl with the test specimen to the weight increase due to the water vapor permeability of the test specimen, the methodology with regard to sensitivity in the deep measuring ranges is subject to strong limits. The device according to the invention aims to remedy these inadequacies.
By using the volumetric instead of the gravimetric method to determine the water vapor which has passed through, the sensitivity can be increased considerably and, accordingly, measurements can be carried out in a relatively shorter time with better accuracy and reproducibility. Apart from this, no expensive climatic cabinet is required to carry out the measurements, but only a simple device for achieving constant temperature.
The device according to the invention for determining the water vapor permeability of a film is characterized in that the film to be tested is arranged as a separating layer between two rooms with different water vapor partial pressure and that a volume measuring device closed with a liquid drop is provided, which is intended to measure the volume respectively. -to measure the decrease in a room due to the migration of water vapor through the test object in equilibrium with the atmospheric pressure as a function of time.
For a better understanding of the functioning of the apparatus, an example of an arrangement is explained below.
1 shows a diagram of the measuring chamber, which consists of an upper shell 1 and a lower shell 2. The two chamber parts are sealed against the test item by means of a round cord rubber ring (O-ring) 3, and the test item 4 rests on a flat surface of the lower chamber part 2. The lower part of the shell is filled, for example, with water 5 to just below the test specimen, whereby to prevent splashes on the test specimen, moving the tray through z. B. a piece of cotton wool that floats in the water (not shown here) can be sealed. The upper part 1 contains two approaches with capillary bores for quick-release fasteners 6, 7, to which coupling pieces 8, which seal with the help of an O-ring 9, can be connected.
The test piece 4 is placed in the bowl 2 filled with water 5 and the upper bowl part 1 is placed over it. The two shell parts are held together by a clip lock 21, for example.
A plug-in coupling 8 is then connected to the coupling piece 7 and, for example, with the aid of a hose 10 to a source of dry air, shown here for example by a drying cartridge 11 and a fan 12, is connected. After the space above the test object has been flushed with dry air, the opening 7 is closed, which can be done, for example, by squeezing off the hose 10 or by inserting a coupling piece in the form of a pin into this opening. The volume indicator is then attached to the coupling opening 6.
The volume disk is shown schematically in Fig. 2 and works as follows:
A measuring capillary 18 is attached via a quick coupling, which in turn seals against the measuring cup with a round cord sealing ring 9.
This measuring capillary can for example be designed in such a way that a thread of a certain volume is cut in the incision on a base body 13.
The base body is encased by a tube 14, which sits snugly on the outer diameter of the base body, and the measuring capillary is thereby formed.
On the outside of this tube there is arranged a transparent tube 15 which is displaceable in height and position around the outer diameter of the tube 14 and which is threadedly movable in a sleeve 16 by an adjusting screw 17 for mechanical reinforcement.
This outer tube 15 is provided with a calibration 20 corresponding to the pitch of the thread. A drop of liquid 22 is brought into the capillary 18 as an indicator drop and, in a lower position, is brought into congruence with the zero mark 22 of the calibration scale at the beginning of the measurement.
The displacement of this indicator drop as a function of time provides information about the increase in volume in the upper measuring chamber compartment above the test item, caused by the water vapor that has passed through.
The functionality of the device, cited for example, can also be carried out in reverse, by filling the lower measuring chamber 2 with a desiccant and flushing the upper measuring chamber 1 with air with a higher water vapor partial pressure at the start of the measurement after inserting the test object and closing the measuring chamber. In this case, the indicator unit is to be used analogously to determine a volume reduction of the upper volume, which is done by moving the indicator drop 22 into an upper layer of the measuring capillary 18, the outer tube 15 with the calibration scale being placed upside down and used accordingly to determine a volume reduction can be.
Since the analogous implementation of the method in the last-mentioned way can be readily derived from the preceding explanations, a detailed description of this exemplary mode of operation is dispensed with here.
3 shows an external view of the device, with both the indicator unit 13/14 with calibration graduation 15 and the connection for the supply of dry (or moist) air 8 being shown plugged into the corresponding coupling pieces 6, 7. During the measurement, the hose 10 would have to be squeezed off to close the coupling piece 7, for example.
The upper chamber part 1 and the lower chamber part 2, which are held together, for example, by the locking clip 21, are also visible.
