Flow cell
The subject matter of the invention is a flow-through cuvette in which the cross-sectional dimension of the liquid supply and / or discharge pipe is greater than the measuring section of the measuring chamber of the cuvette which is perpendicular to the direction of flow. Such a cuvette is particularly suitable for uninterrupted determination or
Observation and control of individual properties of liquids and gases.
The change over time of individual properties of liquids and gases, such as B. the concentration and the refractive index, is checked using cuvettes through which the liquid to be tested flows continuously.
The flow cell must meet the following metrological conditions: a. the medium to be measured should completely fill that part of the cuvette which the radiation penetrates; b. the medium to be measured should be changed evenly in the entire cuvette space; c. the width of the medium to be measured must be selected according to the necessity.
The basic structure of such a known measuring cuvette is shown in FIG. 1. The radiation enters through the entry window 1 of the cylindrical housing in the axial direction and exits through the exit window 2. It runs through the medium to be tested, which fills the interior of the cuvette. The interior space between the windows 1 and 2 has the length L and the diameter d. The medium to be measured enters through one of the openings of diameter q and exits through the other.
The diameter q of the inlet opening is expediently chosen to be about 5 mm.
If the cuvette is significantly longer than the diameter of the inlet opening, i.e. L> q, the inertia of the mass of the liquid in the cuvette or the gas in the cuvette means that the entire amount of the medium in the cuvette space is not exchanged .
Another form of a cuvette constructed according to known principles is shown in FIGS. 2a and 2b.
FIG. 2a shows the cuvette, seen from the side, with a longitudinal section through the upper half of the cuvette, and FIG. 2b shows a cross section through the center of the cuvette.
If, as in Fig. 2a, the diameter of the inlet opening q is greater than the effective length L of the cuvette, the inflowing liquid flows, as can be seen from Fig. 2b, only in the middle of the cuvette space, and the complete and uniform exchange of the medium to be tested is not secured.
The purpose of the invention is to create a flow-through cell in which a uniform flow of the medium to be measured is ensured over the entire cross-section of the measuring space.
The flow-through cuvette according to the invention is characterized in that a transition space at least partially enclosing it is arranged between the inlet opening and the measuring space.
An exemplary embodiment of the cuvette according to the invention is shown in FIGS. 3a and 3b. 3a shows the cuvette in a side view, the upper part being shown in longitudinal section and FIG. 3b a cross section through the center of the cuvette.
The cuvette consists of two housing parts 1 and 2, in each of which a glass window 3 and 4 is inserted.
In the left housing part 1, an annular upper passage space 6 is incorporated. into which the inlet pipe 5 and the outlet pipe 7 arranged diametrically to this open out. The transition space comprises the measuring space located between the windows 3 and 4 of the cuvette, so that the medium to be tested flows through the inlet opening 5 into the space between the two cuvette windows, fills the space evenly, and exits again through the outflow opening.
The cuvette presented is of course only one embodiment given as an example. The cuvette can also be designed in such a way that, for. B. the inlet opening is not opposite the flow opening from, but attached perpendicular to it; in this case the transition space does not have a symmetrical shape. If necessary, at least one deflecting body can be arranged in the transition space, regardless of whether it is symmetrical or asymmetrical, in order to make the flow more uniform.
