Metal containers for preserving food and beverages
The invention relates to a metal container for preserving food and beverages, in particular acidic foods or beverages, for example goods saturated with carbon dioxide, such as beer, soda water, non-alcoholic beverages and fruit juices, fruits and vegetables.
Known metal containers of this type usually consist of a cylindrical side wall and two end walls made of the same metal, usually tinplate, i.e. H. Sheet iron coated with tin. Finally, aluminum cans were also used.
In order to prevent any reaction of the preserved materials with the metals of the container, the inner walls of the known containers are coated with a lacquer, i. E. H. with an impermeable cover. During the manufacture of the containers, this lacquer layer can and is usually damaged, so that the underlying metal is exposed to the contents of the canned food or beverage. This damage can result from the folding process or from the filling and sealing process.
If the lacquer coating is damaged in places, the underlying metal, i.e. the tinplate, is exposed to food or beverages. In some cases, even the tin covering the steel base is torn or scraped off, and then the steel base is exposed to the food or drink, and this damage leads to a shortened shelf life of the preserved product. Salts can be formed which give the preserved products a negative taste.
The invention overcomes the stated disadvantages.
The metal container according to the invention for the preservation of food or beverages is characterized in that part of the wall of the container consists of a metal with a more negative normal potential in the voltage series than the rest of the metal of the container or contains such a metal, and this part is permeable to metal ions Layer is covered, while the remaining parts of the wall are either covered with this permeable or with an impermeable layer. In the voltage series, the most suitable metals are listed in the order in which the anode potential decreases against hydrogen, magnesium, aluminum, zinc, iron, stainless steel, tin and lead.
However, other metals which correspond to the above definition can also be used and, in particular when using alloys, suitable combinations of metals and / or alloys can easily be put together by the person skilled in the art.
The permeable layer is preferably made of a permeable lacquer, a permeable synthetic resin or a permeable plastic, i. H. a coating that is particularly permeable to metal ions. One or more parts of the walls of the container, preferably the lids, can be made of aluminum and the remaining parts of the walls, for example the side wall, can be made entirely or in part of sheet tin, or sheet iron which is coated with tin or vice versa.
Permeable synthetic resins or plastics are, for example, vinyl resins such as polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride and the like. According to the invention it is possible that the wall with a negative normal potential, for example the aluminum wall, is covered with the permeable coating, for example made of vinyl resin, while the other walls, for example the tinplate walls, are coated with a lacquer without permeability. If the permeable paint or the permeable plastic coating and even the tin layer are damaged, the exposed metal and the contents of the container can react, whereby metal salts are dissolved in the food or beverage.
Due to the presence of the other metal with a higher anode potential, these metal ions are taken up by the other metal through the permeable coating, so that the taste of the preserved product is not adversely affected. As a result, the shelf life or the permanent quality of the container contents is considerably longer than with known cans. The shelf life of canned beer and beverages saturated with carbon dioxide, which lasts approximately 6 months, is increased by several years. Frozen orange concentrate in cans, which normally lasts a maximum of eighteen months, appears to be faultless in taste and quality even after five years when it is preserved in a can according to the invention.
example
A container is made with a cylindrical side wall made of tinplate (iron coated with tin) and a bottom and top plate made of aluminum. The tinplate sidewall and aluminum bottom and lid are covered with a permeable vinyl resin cover.
Instead, it is possible that the aluminum wall is coated with a permeable resin, while the tinplate wall is lacquered, i. H. is covered with an impermeable layer.
Because of the permeability of the synthetic resin coatings, there is contact of the electroylte, namely the beer, the carbon dioxide-saturated beverage, fruit juice or other contents of the container with the aluminum surface. Since aluminum is negative to iron and tin, it acts as an anode and provides cathodic protection for the tin and iron in the event that the tinplate is partially exposed to the electrolyte due to damage to the coating on the tinplate. If the aluminum surfaces were provided with a completely protective coating (that is, a coating which has no permeability whatsoever), no effect would occur because they would be completely isolated from this effect.
The partially permeable synthetic resin coating allows the electrolyte to penetrate and come into contact with the aluminum. However, the amount of acidic electrolyte that penetrates through the coating forms an aluminum salt which, in the presence of a large excess of metal, becomes a basic salt with relatively poor permeability properties. Therefore, the formation of this basic salt, which can be referred to as a mixture of aluminum hydrate and an aluminum salt, prevents another effect and slows down the electrolytic conductivity through the layer of ions, which is necessary as a current carrier.
However, there is actually a small conductivity from these ions which penetrate the partially permeable coating of the paint, and this maintains the electrical protective potential which suppresses the dissolution of undesirable ions such as iron and tin. It is known that very small traces of the order of two or three parts per million parts of iron disrupt the taste and clarity of beer and other beverages. These small traces also affect the color and taste of most carbon dioxide-saturated drinks.
Containers according to the invention, which were packaged and stored for two years, had an excellent condition of the contents at the end of these two years.
