Friction Wheel Drive Mechanism This invention relates to a friction wheel drive mechanism having steerable friction wheels, particularly one in conjunction with line scanning devices. So far, such devices for controlling metalworking machines, especially gas flame cutting devices, have become known by means of templates. Occasionally, the tracking along the template is done by hand, in other arrangements devices for automatic tracking are available.
For the drive of the processing unit is best suited for a constant movement speed, for example by means of an electric motor which drives a friction wheel that is in contact with a surface. The wheel is steered in such a way that the burner is moved according to the course of the template.
In such an arrangement, the machine is driven at a speed dependent on the engine speed. At least it must be noted that this constant speed, depending on the situation in the course of the steering movements, has to be influenced by an additional rotation effect either in an adding or subtracting sense to the normal wheel speed, depending on the transmission that drives the motor with the wheel connects.
Experience has shown that the changes in speed result in certain disadvantages. For example, it is necessary for gas cutting torches to work at a constant speed in order to cut steel precisely and accurately and with a constant cutting width. The solution to the problem requires, for example, in known designs a specific disposition for a given gear ratio, where the solution is relatively little adaptable.
In accordance with the present invention, a simplified drive mechanism is proposed which not only compensates for the speed changes that would otherwise occur when steering, but also creates a very simple drive mechanism that is suitable for adapting the engine speed to the required drive wheel speed. Due to its structure, this drive mechanism is very compact and enables simple and economical manufacture.
For a better understanding of the invention, it will be described below by way of an example and with the aid of a drawing, in which: Fig. 1 shows a sectional view of a line scanning arrangement, and Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the same arrangement. The drive mechanism shown in the figures of a line scanning arrangement includes a base plate 4 in which a sleeve 5 is rotatably mounted. At the lower end of the sleeve 5 there is a toothed wheel 6 with a flat zone 7.
In the same way, another gear wheel 8 is installed in the base plate 4, which is connected to one end of a shaft 9 and is in turn driven by the non-visible drive motor. A shaft 10 is rotatably connected to the sleeve 5. The lower part of the shaft 10 ends in a housing 11 which contains the bearings for the shaft 12 which is rotatable in the housing. At each end of the shaft 12 there is a wheel designated 13 and 14. These wheels have the same design and are firmly connected to the shaft 12. The wheel 13 is in operative connection with the flat zone 7 on the toothed wheel 6, while the wheel 14 is driven with the table or the surface 17 in connection.
A spacer 15 separates the bearings and is blocked by means of the adjusting screw 16 in the housing. The upper end of the shaft 10 carries a gear 18 in which a toothed drive belt 19 engages. A steering motor 20 carries a toothed belt pulley 21 on its shaft, which likewise engages in the toothed drive belt 19. This drive belt 19 is, as can be seen, also with a pulley at the upper end of the optical sensor assembly 2 in engagement.
This probe assembly can be any suitable template tracking device which generates steering signals for the motor 20 and causes the motor to rotate so that the probe assembly advances along the template.
For the operation of the device it is a prerequisite that the sensor arrangement 22 supplies a suitable signal for the motor 20 and that the latter rotates accordingly so that the sensor always follows the shell contour. At the same time, the drive motor rotates the shaft 9 and thus the gear wheel 8, which in turn drives the gear wheel 6 in engagement with it. Thus, the gear 6 rotates at a constant speed. As long as the wheel 14 rests on the table surface 17, one of its force components opposite the table causes the wheel 13 to be pressed against the flat zone of the gear wheel 6. This pressure between the wheel 13 and the flat zone 7 causes the wheel 13 to rotate, whereby the wheel 14 is also driven by means of the shaft 12.
Without considering the steering movement, it can be seen from Fig. 1 that the wheel 13 rotates at a constant speed, which is determined by the transmission ratio between the gears 6 and 8 and the diameter of the wheel 13 and the rolling diameter on the zone 7.
If now the steering motor 20 is excited and because it drives through the wheel 21, the belt pulley 18 is also driven by means of the drive belt 19 so that the housing 11 performs a rotary movement. This rotary movement of the housing 11 steers the wheel 14 and causes the arrangement to follow a template figure by which the signals acting on the motor 20 are determined.
At the same time, as can be seen, this steering rotation is not transmitted to the wheel 14 in such a way that a change in speed is generated. This becomes ver understandable by the requirement that the gear wheel 6 rotates clockwise with reference to FIG.
Another prerequisite is that a steering signal rotates the pulley 18 in the same direction. The reduction in the speed of rotation on the wheel 13 due to the rotation of the shaft 10 is exactly compensated for when this rotation is transmitted to the wheel 14.
It is of course assumed that the wheels 13 and 14 are exactly the same and that the distance of the roll center line of the wheel 13 to the axis of rotation of the housing 11 corresponds exactly to the distance of the roll center line of the wheel 14 to the axis of rotation of the housing 11; . H. that the distances d in Fig. 1 are the same. This is also explained by the fact that when the shaft 9 is blocked and thus when the gear wheel 6 is stationary, the belt pulley 18 can be rotated without any displacement of the axis of the shaft 10 occurring.
This arrangement not only prevents changes in speed as a result of the steering movements, it also excludes the occurrence of counter torques due to the way in which the steering system is introduced into the drive system, in that the latter does not generate any torques on the pulley 18, which at best is caused by the rotation of the gear or occur through frictional resistance.
It should also be noted that the wheels 13 and 14 have spherical contact zones which are in contact with the flat zone 7 and with the table surface 17. The contact zones of the wheels correspond to spherical zone sections and therefore essentially produce point contact. As already mentioned, the distances d must be the same. The alignment of these distances d can proceed as follows: The gear wheel 6 is blocked and the table 17 is replaced by a disc rotatable about the axis of the shaft 10.
If the shaft 10 is driven and the disk rotates with it, then the distances d are not equal. After loosening the adjusting screw 16, the wheels are shifted sideways until the disk no longer rotates. Then the set screw is tightened again.
In the above description it was stated that the wheels 13 and 14 must be identical and the distances d must be the same. However, precisely because of the simple structural design, variations are possible. Because it is advantageous if the wheels do not have the same diameter or if differences can arise as a result of wear and tear or inattention, the compensation can be made by adjusting the distances d accordingly.
This adjustment takes place even with unequal wheel diameters in the manner described above. It should be noted that the following relationship must be fulfilled: The product of the rolling radius of the wheel 13 on the flat zone 7 around the axis 10 times the diameter of the wheel 14 is equal to the product of the rolling radius of the wheel 14 on the surface 17 around the axis 10 times the diameter of the wheel 13.
Due to practical experience, certain wheel diameters and settings are unsuitable. Nevertheless, the aforementioned condition is generally correct. It can also be analytically confirmed that the drive speed, which requires a constant speed of the shaft 9 and a fixed transmission ratio between the gears 8 and 6, is a function of the roll diameter, based on the contact points between the wheel 14 and the surface , 17 is about the axis of the shaft 10.
The speed of these contact points of the wheel 14 on the surface 17 is:
