Process for the production of modified ketone-formaldehyde condensation products The invention relates to a process for the production of modified ketone-formaldehyde condensation products.
The production of modified acetone-formaldehyde resins by joint condensation of acetone and formaldehyde with highly reactive compounds such as phenol and urea is known.
Furthermore, the production of synthetic resins from ketone-formaldehyde precondensates, z. B. methylol ketones, known from alkaline polycondensation reactions.
When carrying out these known processes, solid resin compositions or foamed plastics are generally obtained, depending on the choice of conditions.
The aim and object of the present invention was to develop a process which allows novel modified ketone-formaldehyde condensation products with advantageous properties to be produced.
It has been found that valuable modified ketone-formaldehyde condensation products are obtained if methylol ketones or methylol ketone mixtures with compounds containing primary hydroxyl groups are thermally condensed in the presence of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxides. The compounds containing hydroxyl groups are preferably long-chain compounds such as. B.
Fatty alcohols, polyethers, polyglycols, polyesters and polyalcohols with terminal hydroxyl groups are used. In the same way, the compounds with terminal hydroxyl groups obtained by 'A'thoxylation of alcohols, phenols, amines and amides can be used.
The condensation reaction of the methylol ketones with the compounds containing primary hydroxyl groups is carried out by heating the reaction components in the presence of catalytic amounts of alkaline substances. During the implementation, a partial elimination of formaldehyde may take place. The condensation products produced according to the invention are, depending on the choice of reaction components and conditions, viscous oily, waxy, resinous, sticky or solid substances.
Their properties vary from complete miscibility with water and organic solvents to complete insolubility.
Reaction products of methylol ketones, e.g. B. with long-chain, aliphatic alcohols, polyethers, etc., are good, non-volatile plasticizers.
The reaction products, which have been produced using an excess of methylol ketones, react with the addition of catalytic amounts of basic compounds, such as alkali hydroxide, alkaline earth hydroxide, magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, lead oxide, soda, ammonia, amine, with complete curing through crosslinking. This makes these compounds very valuable for various purposes.
The compounds with polyethers, ethoxylated alcohols, phenols, amines, amides are partly water-soluble before hardening and can be used for impregnation in the textile, paper and leather industry as well as in other branches of industry and through subsequent catalytic treatment with the above or other basic compounds are permanently bound.
The proportion of compounds containing hydroxyl groups is preferably chosen below the equivalent ratio in order to maintain the reactivity of the ketone methylol compounds used for the further reaction.
It is also possible to use the condensation products according to the invention in the production of ketone-formaldehyde resins as an additive, with particular properties of the resins being achieved.
The following examples explain the type of modification of acetone-methylol compounds described.
Example 1 In a vessel with a stirrer and vacuum connection, 15 ml of 50% sodium hydroxide solution are added dropwise to 5 kg of technical-grade dimethylol acetone while stirring. Then 2 kg of molten polyethylene oxide are entered and the mixture is slowly heated under a vacuum of approx. 200 mm. The water constantly distills off from the reaction product. The temperature is increased to 120 C, the mixture foaming vigorously with elimination of formaldehyde.
The reaction has ended after about 1 hour. A total of about 700 to 800 ml of water is split off. The mixture, which is still hot, is poured out and solidified.
The ratio between dimethylolacetone and polyethylene oxide can be varied. In a ratio of 1: 0.7 to 0.8, the products are resinous and sticky. The waxy character predominates at the higher ratio. The products are soluble in water or miscible with water in a certain ratio.
A sample of the reaction product, mixed with 0.5% 10% sodium hydroxide solution, solidifies after 5 minutes to form a tough, insoluble shaped body.
The same mixture, mixed with 50 / a magnesium oxide, also solidifies after 24 hours into a tough, insoluble body. The same applies to the use of alkaline earth metal hydroxides, ammonia, amines and other basic compounds.
Example 2 As in Example 1, but instead of the polyethylene oxide, an ethoxylated fatty alcohol with a fatty alcohol chain length of 4 to 6 carbon atoms is used. The reaction proceeds as in Example 1. The properties of the reaction product are roughly the same. However, the solubility in water is lower.
Example 3 As in Example 1, but instead of the polyethylene oxide, a fatty alcohol from the fatty acid synthesis of paraffin oxidation with an average chain length of 20 carbon atoms is used. The reaction proceeds as indicated in Example 1. However, the reaction product is no longer soluble in water. It dissolves in alcohols, esters and aromatics, but not in hydrocarbons. The reactivity with bases is retained.
Example 4 As in Example 1, but instead of the polyethylene oxide, a polyester plasticizer made from adipic acid with diglycol with a molecular weight of about 2000 is used. The reaction proceeds as in Example 1. E, the reaction product is a hardly flowable, highly viscous liquid which is only swellable in water but soluble in polar solvents. The reactivity with bases is retained.
Example 5 As in Example 1, but instead of the polyethylene oxide, a polyvinyl alcohol with a chain length of approx. N = 40 is used. The reaction proceeds as in Example 1. The result is a highly viscous, water-soluble liquid which also reacts with bases, but does not produce any water-resistant moldings.
