Process for the Production of Linear, Amorphous Copolymers of Ethylene The present invention relates to a process for the production of linear, amorphous, high molecular weight copolymers of ethylene with one or more alpha-olefins. In particular, the present invention relates to a process for the preparation of ethylene-propylene or ethylene-butene-1 copolymers.
The subject of the main patent no. 428 224 is a process for the preparation of high molecular weight, linear, amorphous copolymers of ethylene with α-olefins in the presence of a catalyst which was obtained by bringing together dialkyl aluminum halide and vanadium triacetylacetonate, vanadyl acetylacetonate or vanadyl haloacetylacetonate, which is characterized in that both the catalyst production and the polymerization at a temperature of 0 to -80 C, preferably -10 to -50 C, are carried out.
If these catalyst systems are used under the specified conditions, very high copolymer yields can be obtained in relation to the amount of catalyst used.
For example, if the. Copolymerization carried out in the absence of an inert organic solvent, it is possible to achieve copolymer yields in the range of 1000 parts by weight per part by weight of catalyst.
According to the invention it has now been found that the same results can be obtained if hydrocarbon-soluble addition complexes of vanadium halides or oxide halides with a Lewis base are used instead of the above-mentioned vanadium compounds to prepare the catalyst together with the dialkylaluminum halides.
It has also been found, as in the case of the catalysts described in the main patent, that it is necessary to carry out both the catalyst preparation and the copolymerization at a temperature from 0 to -80.degree. C. and preferably from -10 to -50.degree . In order to achieve high copolymer yields per unit weight of the catalyst used.
If you work under these conditions, the catalysts surprisingly show an activity which is much greater than that which is shown by the same, but prepared catalysts at higher temperatures.
In addition, it was found that the activity of the catalyst remains practically constant when working in the temperature range described above.
Examples of the vanadium compounds which can be used to prepare the catalysts of the invention are the addition products of a vanadium halide, such as vanadium tetra and trichloride and vanadyl trichloride with: a) aliphatic ethers, such as diethyl ethers, dipropyl ethers, diethoxyethane, etc., b) cyclic Ethers, such as tetrahydrofuran, dioxane, etc., c) tert. Amines such as trimethulamine, methyl diethylamine, etc.
d) heterocyclic nitrogen bases, such as pyridine, quinoline, etc. called.
The activity of the catalyst used in the process according to the invention varies depending on the molar ratio of the compounds which are used to prepare this catalyst.
It has been found that it is advantageous to use a catalyst in which the molar ratio of dialkyl aluminum monohalide to vanadium compound is between 2 and 30, and preferably between 4 and 20.
The catalyst can be prepared in the absence of the monomers to be polymerized; one. Alkylaluminum halide dissolved in a solvent can be mixed with the solution of a vanadium compound and then the mixture can be brought into contact with the monomers to be copolymerized. However, the preparation of the catalyst is preferably carried out in the presence of the monomers to be copolymerized.
The polymerization can be carried out in a continuous process, with periodic or continuous addition of catalyst to the system and the ratio between the concentration of the monomers in the liquid phase in which the copolymerization takes place is kept constant.
This result can be achieved by continuously adding a monomer mixture of constant composition.
If in the absence of a solvent worked tet, ethylene can continuously be added to an excess of c'-olefin, eg. B. propylene, introduced who the, pressure and temperature are kept constant.
The copolymerization can also be carried out in the presence of inert solvents such as aliphatic hydrocarbons, for example n-heptane, isooctane, or aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene and toluene, or halogenated hydrocarbons such as chloroform, trichlorethylene, tetrachlorethylene, chlorobenzene, etc. .
Completely amorphous copolymers of ethylene with alpha-olefins, especially propylene or butene-1, are obtained when the mole fraction of ethylene in the crude copolymer is below 75%.
In order to achieve this result it is necessary to keep the composition of the monomers in the mixture in a certain ratio during the entire copolymerization.
If an amorphous ethylene-propylene copolymer is to be produced, it is advantageous to work during the entire copolymerization at a molar ratio of propylene to ethylene in the reacting liquid phase equal to or greater than 4.
If an amorphous ethylene-butene-1 copolymer is to be produced, it is expedient if a molar ratio of butene to ethylene equal to or greater than 20 is present in the reacting liquid phase during the entire copolymerization.
It is, however, possible, taking these facts into account, to modify the composition of the copolymer over a wide range by varying the molar ratio of the monomers present in the liquid phase.
The amorphous copolymers obtained according to the invention are extremely suitable for a number of uses in the field of synthetic rubbers; When vulcanized, they provide elastomers with very good mechanical properties.
Example 1 The reaction temperature consists of a large glass sample tube with a capacity of 750 ml and a diameter of 5.5 cm, which is provided with tubes for gas inlet and outlet, a mechanical stirrer and a thermometer housing. The gas inlet tube extends to the bottom of the container and ends in a porous disc (3.5 cm diameter). The apparatus is kept in a thermostat at -20 ° C. 350 ml of anhydrous n-heptane are poured in and this solvent is then saturated at a temperature of -20 C by continuously introducing a mixture containing propylene and ethylene in a molar ratio of 4: 1 at a speed of 250 N1 / h.
At the same time, the catalyst is prepared at a temperature of -20 C by mixing 14 mmoles of diethylaluminum monochloride in 20 ml of anhydrous toluene with 2.8 mmoles of vanadium trichloride tetrahydrofuranate in 20 ml of anhydrous toluene.
The catalyst prepared in this way is introduced into the reaction apparatus 1 minute after its preparation. The supply of the mixture of the two monomers is continued at a flow rate of 400 N1 / h. 10 minutes after the catalyst has been introduced, 20 ml of methanol are added to terminate the reaction.
The product thus obtained is freed from inorganic impurities by subjecting it to repeated treatment with aqueous hydrochloric acid and separating the two phases formed.
The heptane phase is then washed with water until neutral and the copolymer is through. Be treatment with an excess of an acetone-methanol mixture coagulated.
The product, dried in a vacuum, comprises 15 g of a white and rubber-like solid, which in the X-ray examination proves to be completely amorphous.
It contains about 40 mol% ethylene, as can be determined by radiochemical investigation, and has an intrinsic viscosity of 2.4, determined in tetralin at 135 C.
The average rate of copolymerization is
EMI0002.0020
If the same conditions as described above are used, but the catalyst preparation and the polymerization are carried out at 25 ° C. instead of -20 ° C., 2.2 g of an ethylene-propylene copolymer is obtained in 20 min can be calculated.
EMI0002.0022
Example 2 The same conditions as in Example 1 are used, but instead of the tetrahydrofuranate of VCl3, the pyridinate of VCl3 is used to produce the catalyst.
In the reaction apparatus described in Example 1, which was previously vented and regulated to -20 C in the thermostat, 350 ml of n-heptane are introduced under nitrogen and this solvent is then introduced by introducing a gaseous mixture of propylene-ethylene in a molar ratio of 4 : 1 saturated with a speed of 200 Nl / h.
In the meantime, the catalyst is prepared at -20 C by mixing 1.4 mmol of the tripyridinate of vanadium trichloride (VCI,. [C, H @ N] 3) in 25 ml of anhydrous toluene with 7 mol of diethylaluminum monochloride in 25 ml ml of anhydrous toluene produced.
1 minute after its preparation, the catalyst is lifted into the reaction apparatus under nitrogen.
The feed of the two monomers is continued for 10 minutes with stirring at a rate of 400 standard l / h.
Thereafter, 30 ml of methanol are added to interrupt the reaction and the copolymer obtained is purified by repeated treatment with aqueous hydrochloric acid. It is then coagulated with acetone and methanol. This gives 4 g of an ethylene-propylene copolymer which contains about 48 mol% of ethylene.
The average rate of copolymerization is
EMI0003.0009

The catalyst is prepared at a temperature of -20 C under nitrogen by mixing 14 mmoles of diethylaluminum monochloride in 20 ml of anhydrous toluene with 2.8 mmoles of the complex formed from vanadium trichloride with symmetrical diethoxyethane in 20 ml of anhydrous toluene.
The catalyst prepared in this way is introduced into the apparatus 1 minute after its preparation. The feed of the mixture of the two monomers is continued at a rate of 400 l (STP) / h. 20 minutes after the introduction of the catalyst, the reaction is terminated by adding 20 ml of methanol. The product is purified and isolated as described in Example 1. After vacuum drying, 20 g of a white and rubber-like solid are obtained which, in the X-ray test, is amorphous. 8 minutes after the start, the reaction is interrupted by adding methanol and the product is purified and recovered as described in Example 1.
After drying under vacuum, 5 g of a solid product are obtained which, in the X-ray test, is amorphous and completely soluble in boiling n-heptane and resembles an unvulcanized elastomer.
The rate of copolymerization corresponds

If the same conditions as described above are used, but the catalyst preparation and the polymerization are carried out instead of -20 C at 25 '= C, 1.1 g of an ethylene-propylene copolymer are obtained in the course of 20 minutes. according to the following formula
