Method of manufacturing a gasket lining The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a gasket lining consisting in impregnating a cold elastic block on at least part of its surface with a product capable of closing the pores. of this surface and dissolved in at least its weight of a suitable solvent. The seal thus obtained is suitable for all uses and more particularly for being introduced between two concrete elements and thus ensuring the continuity of the sealed surface of the assembly. It can be used in particular for roads, airport runways and more generally to solve all sealing problems appearing in the construction industry.
This seal can also be used in a large number of other fields such as electrical industries, wooden or metal frames, shipbuilding and all interior or exterior work.
The impregnant is advantageously constituted by latex or bitumen dissolved in at least its weight of solvent such as a hydrocarbon or semi-liquid bitumen.
The resulting gasket packing retains its plasticity throughout its full extent and is slightly tacky along its impregnated surface (s). It is also possible to incorporate a plasticizer into the impregnating agent.
The manufacture can be carried out by dipping, spraying or applying the impregnator under vacuum on one or more faces of the block of foam rubber or equivalent product.
In all cases, the excess impregnant is allowed to drain naturally without any pressure being necessary and it is allowed to air dry. Of course, the degree of impregnation of the impregnant is easily regulated by the flow rate, of the impregnant and the duration of the spraying. Depending on the degree of impregnation desired, the operation can be carried out in several passages of the trolley carrying the foam block. A more or less thick layer can thus be obtained on the surface of the foam rubber block which remains permanently flexible without any hardening and which follows without any rupture the movements due to compression and expansion of the block.
As the raw material of the block, it is generally possible to use any flexible foamed material with open cells such as foam rubber, polyesters, polyurethanes or polyethers, latex or solutions of synthetic rubber.
To obtain a more in-depth impregnation, the impregnating solvent would be extended in larger quantities, which could reach 90% of the weight of the impregnation: for this purpose, light solvents such as light gasolines which evaporate rapidly by air drying.
On the other hand, the very extensive dilution makes it possible to deposit a determined quantity of solution in the cells of the filling.
The impregnator which completely or partially seals the open cells retains sufficient elasticity not to destroy the texture of the support block.
For the basic impregnation, it is possible to use a pressurized spray tunnel, with continuous circulation of the strips or plates of foam product to be sprayed, the impregnating being introduced for example through nozzles.
It would also be possible to use a tank comprising at a certain distance from the bottom a double bottom pierced with a multitude of holes, a grid or a screen so that the excess impregnant can escape through the bottom when the liquid level has reached. reached the double bottom; it is emptied by means of an external valve. The block to be impregnated can thus be treated on one, two, three or four sides with more or less penetration. This impregnation can be carried out by placing at the center of the tank an axis driven either by hand or by a small electric motor and carrying a drum pierced with holes and the diameter of which is slightly less than the width of the tank. Inside the drum are placed the bands or blocks to be impregnated.
This tank contains the impregnation in which the tank is immersed or else the impregnation liquid is sent through the hollow central axis and pierced with holes, or else the sprinkling can be ensured by a moving sprinkler ramp on a trolley rolling on the edges of the tank containing the block to be impregnated. The tank and the drum being emptied, the movement of the drum is accelerated and by centrifugal force drying is ensured quickly.
In addition, the centrifuging results in returning the excess impregnating liquid to the ends of the treated bands carried by the drum. At the same time, the impregnating product is more abundant on the surface than inside the block.
After centrifugation or else after simple draining, the product is left to dry in the open air before packaging. Any other process of impregnation by gravity or under pressure can be used, or else under vacuum and pressure, of the type used for the impregnation of wood.
The gasket described as an insulator of line pipes can be used to protect them from moisture and thus eliminate the need for painting.
