Process for the optical brightening of plastics
The invention relates to a process for the optical brightening of plastics or non-textile structures made from them with the aid of optical bleaching agents made from new naphthalimide derivatives which achieve excellent optical stimulating effects on plastics made from artificial or synthetic, high molecular weight organic resins.
According to the invention, this is achieved in that the plastics or non-textile structures made from them are treated with a naphthalimide compound of the formula:
EMI1.1
in which R is an achromatic organic radical and R2 is a hydrogen atom or an achromatic organic radical.
Experiments for the purpose of optical bleaching of various types of plastics made from high molecular weight organic, artificial or synthetic resins have shown that the stated purpose is satisfactorily fulfilled by the naphthalimide derivatives of the formula (I). This is because, when dissolved or dispersed in a suitable solvent or when applied to a suitable base material, these compounds fluoresce significantly blue-violet in daylight or in ultraviolet light and have a broad ultraviolet absorption band.
In addition, they generally have a good affinity for various types of plastics made of artificial or synthetic, high molecular weight organic resins and are inherently good in stability. Therefore they exert significant and permanent visual effects on the substances mentioned.
Various compounds can be used as the optical bleaching agent of the formula (I) given. Examples of achromatic organic radicals for R1 of the formula (I) are: straight-chain and branched alkyl radicals, such as methyl, ethyl, n- and isopropyl, n- and isobutyl, n- and isopentyl, n- and isohexyl, n-octyl, 2 -Athylhexyl, n- and isododecyl, n- and isotridecyl and the like. These alkyl radicals can be represented by hydroxyl, alkoxyl, prim. Amino, sec. Ammimo (such as alkylamino), tert. Amino (such as bisalkyl'amino-), quart.
Ammonium group (such as trialkytammonium group) and the like may be substituted, such as. B.
Hydroxylethyl, Hydroxylpropyl, Hydroxylbutyl, Methoxyäthyl, Athoxyäthyl, Athoxypropyl,
Propoxypropyl, N, N-dimethylaminoethyl,
N, N-dimethylaminopropyl,
N-trimethylammonium ethyl,
N-trimethylammonium propyl,
N-triethylammonium ethyl,
N-TriÏthylammoniumpropyl and the like radicals.
Furthermore, aryl radicals such as phenyl, naphthyl or the like can also be used as Ri, these aryl radicals d by at least one such group as alkyl, alkoxy, hydroxyl, alkoxyalkyl,
Hydroxyalkyl, amino, sec. Aminoalkyl, tert. Aminoalkyl, quart. Ammonium alkyl,
Nitro, halogen and the like, may be substituted. Ri can also be an aralkyl radical, such as benzyl, or a cycloaliphatic radical, such as cyclohexyl.
The achromatic radicals already mentioned for Ri can also be used as achromatic organic radicals for R2 of the formula (I), where R2 with Ri can be the same as or different from Ri. Furthermore, R2 can also be a residue, such as e.g. B.

be.
Practical examples of the optical bleaching agents can be seen from the exemplary embodiments of the invention below, it being possible for the compounds listed for this purpose to be used for the present process alone or in a mixture with one another.
The compounds of the formula (I) given can easily be prepared by various processes. So you can z. B. by condensation of naphthalimides substituted in the 4-position by a sulfonic or nitro group or a halogen atom or their achromatic N-derivatives with achromatic, alcoholic or phenolic hydroxyl groups containing compounds are advantageously obtained.
Furthermore, they can by condensation of 4-substituted naphthalic acids containing an achromatic organic radical bonded via an oxygen atom or their anhydrides with ammonia or achromatic amines or optionally also by treatment of 4-hydroxynaphthalimide or its achromatic N-derivatives can be obtained with a suitable etherifying agent.
The new optical bleaching agents of the formula (I) all exert excellent optical bleaching effects when applied to various types of plastics made from artificial or synthetic high molecular weight organic resins when applied or when added for the purpose of adherence or penetration.
The new optical bleaching agents can advantageously be used in various types of structures such as foils, films, plates, tubes, sleeves, blocks and the like made of artificial or synthetic resins. For example, from a synthetic resin such as polystyrene, with the addition of the new optical bleaching agent, transparent, strongly blue-violet fluorescent structures can be obtained by shaping with heating in the extrusion or injection molding process. Here, however, light, glossy, colored structures can be obtained by using a previously colored starting resin or adding a suitable coloring agent.
Furthermore, the new optical bleaching agents can also be used with advantage for optical bleaching of various types of molding materials made from synthetic resins, such as polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylate, polyester, polycarbonate, polyurethane, polyamide, polyolefin and the like.
The optical brightening of the various plastics by means of the new optical bleaching agent can also be carried out so that, for. B. at any stage in the manufacture or processing of plastics d'as new optical bleaching agent is added. A solution of the new optical bleaching agent in a suitable solvent can also be applied to the structures.
In the following, the invention is explained in more detail using exemplary embodiments, without, however, being restricted thereto. The expression “part” should always be understood to mean “part by weight”.
example 1
For 1000 parts of polystyrene resin there are 2 parts of N-methyl-4-methoxynaphthalic acid imide of the formula
EMI2.1
N-phenyl-4-methoxy-naphthalsÏureimid of the formula
EMI2.2
N-butyl-4-methoxy-naphtha? Acidimide of the formula
EMI2.3
and N-methyl-4-butoxy-suture acid imide of the formula
EMI2.4
added, kneaded with heating to 200-240 C and shaped according to the usual extrusion process, whereby in each case transparent, strongly blue-violet fluorescent polystyrene plates are obtained.
In the above case, however, by adding 20-50 parts of titanium dioxide during kneading, opaque sheets of shiny, beautiful white can be obtained.
Example 2
2 parts of N-¯-HydroxyÏthyl-4-phenoxy-naphthalic acid imide are added to 1000 parts of molded polystyrene pieces, kneaded with heating to 200-240 C and shaped by the usual extrusion process, as a result of which transparent plates with a strong blue-violet fluorescence are obtained. By adding 20-50 parts of titanium dioxide during kneading, however, opaque sheets of shiny, beautiful white are obtained in this case.
If, in this example, 2 parts of N-phenyl-4-phenoxy-naphthalic acid imide are used instead of the N-fl-HydroxyÏthyl-4-phenoxy-naphthalic acid imide mentioned, then the same results are also achieved.
