. . . . . . . 2,5 ml hématine NOC poudre (C.I. Natural Black 1 - No 75.290) . . . . . . 7,14 g eau permutée . . . . . . . . . . . qsp. 11.
Pigment yellow 37 -No 77199),
Horsehair intended in particular for brushing in organic linear polymer material and method for manufacturing it The present invention relates to a new horsehair obtained chemically from linear organic polymer material, which can be used in brushwork in particular; it also relates to a process for manufacturing it.
In recent decades, horsehair made from organic linear polymer material has been used more and more to constitute the bristles of brushes, mainly because of the difficulties of supplying natural material and the increase in demand for brush-making articles.
Attempts have been made to use horsehair, in particular synthetic material, having properties close to those of natural materials, especially with regard to flexibility, digging power, retention of liquids, and even appearance.
It has also been proposed to use horsehair dyed either in the mass during spinning-extrusion, or with the aid of dyes on the finished object, then, optionally, to undulate said horsehair. In order to obtain even more flexible articles, it has been suggested to replace, in part or in whole, the normal cylindrical horsehair by tapered-shaped horsehair which can be produced during the spinning-extrusion process itself. These horsehair, sometimes mixed with natural materials, lead to satisfactory products.
To obtain brushes for domestic use, such as hairbrushes, toilet brushes, beard brushes, clothes brushes, it has been proposed to thin the free ends of the bristles, for example, by abrasion, grinding, tapering, fleurage or all other similar operations well known to technicians and which will be designated, in the remainder of the description, by the general expression of n finishing treatment. In some cases, this thinning can be a simple rounding obtained by abrasion.
Unfortunately, if in terms of physical characteristics, these products have properties close to those of natural materials, they are still too different from them, in particular by their appearance.
The Holder has found a new horsehair obtained by chemical means, in an organic polymer material, with a new appearance which may in certain cases be reminiscent of natural hairs, of boar for example. This new horsehair which has, at one at least of its ends, a thinning showing the axial portion, is characterized in that, in the vicinity of said end, the peripheral portion is darker in color than the axial portion. In practice, the peripheral portion is of a darker shade than the axial portion over the entire length of the hair.
The new product in accordance with the invention can be made from any organic linear materials in current use for the manufacture of bristles. For example, in synthetic material such as polycon- densates: polymades (of the type 6, 6-6, 6-10, 6-12, 11 etc.), polyesters (polyethylene terephthalate), polyurethanes, polymerizates :
polyolefins (polyethylene, polypropylene), polyvinyls and its derivatives, but also in artificial material such as viscose. Generally, the section of the hair is circular, but it can also be irregular.
The invention also relates to a process for the preparation of this new product. This process consists in manufacturing horsehair in an organic linear polymer material dyed substantially through the core, then in treating said horsehair to give them a surface shade different from the previous one and finally, in subjecting at least one of the ends of said horsehair to them. a finishing treatment. Depending on the nature of the raw material available, a technician can easily determine the conditions of the process of the invention. If the horsehair is already dyed in the spinning mass, it suffices to dye it superficially in a known manner using a second dye.
If, on the contrary, this horsehair is of a natural color, that is to say that it has not been tinted by any process, it suffices, initially, to dye it under conditions sufficient for a dye can penetrate significantly into the horsehair core, then, in a second step, to dye it superficially as before. In either case, the key is that there is at least one dye layer if killed on the periphery.
Preferably, the peripheral layer of the horsehair is black in color. But it can also be of another shade: gray or brown or even light, which makes it possible to vary the effects obtained to a large extent.
The bristles according to the invention make it possible to advantageously prepare brush-making articles such as: toilet brushes, clothes brushes, toothbrushes, paintbrushes, brooms, cleaning brushes, industrial brushes and very particularly hairbrushes. For this latter type of application, which is preferred for the invention, the end of the bristles is advantageously rounded, in particular by abrasion. As already said, these articles are characterized by a new appearance, unexpectedly reminiscent of those made of natural hair, especially wild boar.
They can be used, alone or in a mixture with other natural or synthetic hair, of identical or different length and section. Particularly interesting results are obtained by employing the method of manufacturing brushes described by the owner in his Swiss patent No. 385164 of September 5, 1962, entitled article of brushing and method for its manufacture.
The examples which follow show the manner in which the invention can be implemented and the advantages resulting therefrom. The percentages are understood by weight.
Fig. 1 illustrates a horsehair according to the invention in which (1) shows the dark peripheral zone and (2) the color concentric with (1) disposed at the heart.
Fig. 2 is a section of the horsehair 1 along the axis A-A '. Fig. 3 shows a brush of a preferred type which can be produced with the horsehair according to the invention.
Example 1 A bundle of cylindrical horsehair, naturally tinted, made of polyhexamethylene adipamide mattified with 0.04% Ti O., Diameter 50/100 mm, length 108 cm, is used.
This bundle is treated successively with two dye baths A and B, under the conditions detailed below bath A: composition for one liter of sodium alkylsulfonate, known commercially as LENSEX LE 40. . 0.7 ml glacial acetic acid. . . . . . . . 2.5 ml haematine NOC powder (C.I. Natural Black 1 - No 75.290). . . . . . 7.14 g deionized water. . . . . . . . . . . qsp. 11.
bath B: composition for one liter LENSEX LE 40. . . . . . . . 0.7 ml glacial acetic acid. . . . . . . . 5 ml sodium dichromate. . . . . . . . 3.21 g deionized water. . . . . . . . . . . qsp. 11. At room temperature the boot is immersed in bath A, then after gradual rise to 95o, it is left to act for an hour and a half at this temperature.
After rinsing with water, it is immersed for thirty minutes in bath B, also maintained at around 95o, and finally, after neutralization using a sodium hydroxide solution, it is rinsed with water.
The boot is cut into sections 70 mm long and the two ends of each horsehair constituting these sections are ground so that each end is rounded off by approximately 2 mm.
Each section transformed into a brush tuft gives the finished article a very marked resemblance to a boar bristle brush and furthermore exhibits much superior qualities of resistance to wear.
A cut of this horsehair, in a straight section and in a part other than the one presenting the rounding, reveals the presence of two concentric zones, one if killed substantially in the middle of light brown color, the other located in. periphery only black tint.
Example 2 Example 1 is repeated with only one modification, namely that a mixture of truncated horsehair is used. based on polyhexamethylene adipamide, this mixture being made up in 50/50 proportions by - horsehair whose diameter varies from 0.15 to 0.23 mm with a period of 140 mm, - horsehair whose diameter varies from 0, 20 to 0.30 mm with a period of 140 mm also.
After sectioning the boot into sections and grinding the ends, a particularly satisfactory hairbrush can be made using the method described in the aforementioned Swiss patent.
Example 3 With a cylindrical polycaprolactam horsehair 17/100 mm in diameter, and with the same dye baths as in Example 1, sections 7 cm in length are prepared.
After grinding about 10 mm from one end only, and mixing 50/50 with blue bristles, a beard brush can be made with an attractive appearance identical to that of articles made of natural bristles and, in addition, much better use.
Example 4 Corrugated cylindrical horsehair in polyethylene terephthalate, diameter 40/100 mm, (wave frequency 4-5 mm, wave amplitude 0.8 mm) dyed in the mass by means of 0.1% of a Ferro yellow pigment (CI Pigment yellow 37 -No 77199),
are superficially dyed black under normal polyester dyeing conditions using a mixture of 7 parts TERASIL SL and 3 parts FO-RON 2 BL. After cutting and grinding the ends of the bristles, a tuft is obtained which is perfectly suitable for preparing a clothes brush. Example 5 A bundle of horsehair in polyhexamethylene sebacamide 27/100 mm in diameter, dyed in the mass in yellow, is used.
Under the same conditions as in Example 1, this boot is treated by means of the two baths A and B in which the acetic acid has been replaced by industrial sulfuric acid and the Hematine NOC by a black. chrome TS (CI Mordant black 11 No 14645). After cutting and embossing the ends of these bristles, tufts are obtained which are perfectly suitable for making brooms.
