Process for the production of C-alkyl-E-caprolactams It is known to produce E-caprolactam by reacting cyclohexane derivatives which have a tertiary carbon atom, for example cyclohexanecarboxylic acid, with nitrosating agents in the presence of fuming sulfuric acid. In addition to cyclohexanecarboxylic acid, it is also possible, among other cyclohexane derivatives, to produce caprolactam from methylcyclohexane under the conditions mentioned.
Given this level of knowledge, it was to be expected that the reaction of alkylcyclohexanecarboxylic acids with two tertiary carbon atoms in the cyclohexane ring with nitrosating agents in the presence of sulfuric acid would attack the tertiary carbon atoms with the formation of dialactams or their degradation products. When using cyclohexane derivatives with 2 tertiary carbon atoms, z. B. methyl cyclohexanecarboxylic acid, under the conditions be written actually sets a very hef term reaction, which is associated with a complete destruction of the molecule.
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of C-alkyl-ε-caprolactams, in particular γ-methyl-E-caprolactam, by reacting alkylcyclohexanecarboxylic acids and / or their functional derivatives with nitrosating agents in the presence of SO3-containing sulfuric acid and is characterized in that the reaction is carried out at a temperature not exceeding 100 ° C., preferably at 80 ° C., in an inert diluent boiling at the reaction temperature, preferably cyclohexane, with the slow addition of a nitrosating agent,
The latter is dissolved in fuming sulfuric acid with an SOS content of approximately 10 to 20% and is added in such a dosage that it is used up immediately.
Alkylcyclohexane carboxylic acids suitable as starting material are z. B. the isomeric methyl or dimethylcyclohexanecarboxylic acids, the ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, etc. -cyclohexanecarboxylic acids and their functional derivatives, such as salts, esters, chlorides, etc. The process according to the invention is particularly suitable for Production of γ-methyl-e-caprolactam, starting from 4-methyl-cyclocarboxylic acid or its functional derivatives, which are easily accessible by hydrogenation of the corresponding derivatives of p-toluic acid.
When carrying out the reaction, the alkylcyclohexanecarboxylic acids and / or their functional derivatives are advantageously used in a moderate excess, based on the amount of nitrosating agent. The molar ratio is expediently 1: 0.5 to 1: 0.9.
Nitrosyl sulfate or all compounds which form nitrosyl sulfate in the reaction medium from fuming sulfuric acid, for example nitrosyl chloride, alkyl nitrites or nitrogen oxides, can be used as nitrosating agents. The nitrosating agent, dissolved in the fuming sulfuric acid with an SO3 content of about 10 to 20%, is expediently added to the solution of the alkyl cyclohexanecarboxylic acid derivative in the inert diluent, preferably cyclohexane, where the initiation and progress of the reaction in the steady development of carbon dioxide can be observed.
The caprolactams formed can be isolated after the reaction has ended by neutralizing the reaction mixture diluted with ice water and extracting the caprolactam with a suitable solvent. The unreacted alkylcyclohexane carboxylic acid, which can easily be separated from the caprolactam, can then be added to a new batch.
Example 665 g of methyl 4-methylcyclohexanecarboxylate and 500 ml of cyclohexane are heated to 80 ° C. in a 4-1 three-necked flask equipped with a stirrer, reflux condenser, dropping funnel and thermometer. After this temperature has been reached, a solution of 415 g of nitrosyl sulfate in 720 g of fuming sulfuric acid with an SO3 content of about 15% is added over the course of 41 / _q hours with vigorous stirring, the cyclohexane constantly boiling moderately. After the addition has ended, the mixture is stirred at 80 ° C. for a further hour.
The reaction product is then poured onto about 4 kg of ice, the cyclohexane layer is separated off and the aqueous sulfuric acid is adjusted to a pH of 8 with strong sodium hydroxide solution. The neutralized solution, whose volume is about 6 liters, is extracted with chloroform at 30-35 ° C. The chloroform extract yields the crude γ-methyl-s-caprolactam as a syrup, from which 187.5 g of pure γ-methyl-a-caprolactam are obtained by distillation in vacuo at a boiling point of 148-149 ° C. and 14 torr with a melting point of 38-39 ° C can be obtained.
177 g of unchanged 4-methylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid methyl ester and 131 g of 4-methylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid are recovered from the cyclohexane layer. A further 60 g of 4-methylhexanecarboxylic acid can be extracted from the aqueous phase after acidification after the chloroform extraction of the methylcaprolactam. The yield of γ-methyl-a-caprolactam, based on the converted methylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid, is then 83.5% of theory.
