Self-collimating optical system The present invention relates to an optical self-collimating system for measuring or indicating the inclination of a mirror about an axis perpendicular to the optical axis of the system.
In a known sticker system, light from a source is focused on a slit and the beam exiting the slit passes through a collimating lens to a mirror, the inclination of which is to be indicated. The tilting mirror reflects the beam through the collimation lens to bring it back to the source and in front of the slit this return beam is interrupted by a semi-reflector from which the reflected beam is directed towards a prism of seperation.
The separated beams are compared by photoelectric means, because when, as is usually the case, the amount of light in each beam is large compared to the actual size to be indicated, it may be difficult to achieve good electrical stability. photoelectric means at the zero position of the mirror. In addition, if the average photoelectric current is large, this can eliminate the use of the linear major part of the characteristic of the photoelectric means. In addition, the transmission and reflection on the semi-reflector causes losses of at least 75% of the light initially entering the system. These difficulties are especially disadvantageous when it is necessary to have a precise measurement or indication.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved auto-collimator system of the type in which the inclination of the mirror is detected by photoelectric means, the improved system allowing

<tb> The <SEP> system <SEP> at the same time <SEP> ur <SEP> according to <SEP> the invention,
<tb> for <SEP> measure <SEP> or <SEP> indicates inclination <SEP> of the <SEP> mirror from a zero position in which the mirror plane is at right angles to the optical axis, including a light source,
a collimating lens for passing from this source a beam of light collimated onto said mirror, photoelectric means for receiving the reflected beam from said mirror and reflecting means extending in a plane inclined with respect to the axis optical and in the path of the beam coming from the source and the path of the beam coming back from said mirror,
these reflecting means having a part allowing light to pass and a reflecting part so as to allow a part of the beam reflected by the mirror to fall on the photoelectric means without interference from the source.
This sticker system is characterized in that said reflecting means are in an inclined plane intersecting a plane perpendicular to the optical axis along a line parallel to the axis around which the tilt of the mirror must be measured and that their part leaving passing the light extends over only a part of the useful area of the beam in said inclined plane and this so as to define between the light transmission and light reflection areas two edges which extend at least approximately parallel to the axis around which the inclination of said mirror must be measured,
and in that the collimating lens is placed between said reflecting means and the mirror and is focused on the central part of the useful area in the inclined plane, so that, in the zero position of the mirror, it does so. This return water supply, on the reflection means, images of each of the two edges respectively superimposed on these edges, the image of the first edge being superimposed on the second edge and vice versa, and that when the mirror is tilted from its zero position,
the photoelectric means are sensitive to the light returning from this mirror on the inclined plane on one or the other of the zones arranged on either side of the area situated between the edges, the whole so that the signal of output of the photoelectric means is representative of the angular position of the mirror. The photoelectric means act to compare two beams of relatively low intensity rather than two beams of relatively high intensity as in the known system,
the photoelectric means can easily be actuated on the linear major part of its characteristic. At the same time, it will be understood that when the mirror tilts from its zero position, practically all the light representative of this inclination falls on the photoelectric means.
In a preferred arrangement, the reflecting means comprise an inclined reflector having a slit the length of which is directed at least approximately parallel to the axis of inclination of the tilting mirror, the photoelectric means being sensitive to light reflected therefrom. reflector inclined on either side of the slot.
Another preferred arrangement of the photoelectric means uses a pair of photocells, one to receive the light returned to the inclined plane on one side of the area between the edges and the other to receive the returned light. on such a plane on the other side of said area. Electric cells can be obtained by dividing a single element of silicone crystal. In this way, a precise agreement of the electrical characteristics of these two photoelectric cells is ensured.
Although this is not of particular importance in achieving zero position stability, the use of tuned photocells helps to achieve equal sensitivity on either side of the zero position which can in turn be regarded as an additional contribution to zero stability.
The system preferably comprises imaging means for receiving light by firing the reflecting means and for focusing light returned to one side of the area between the edges on a photocell and the light returned to. the other side of this area on the other photocell. In this way,
by forming an image of the mirror or of the collimating lens on each photoelectric cell, it is ensured that the light is well distributed over the sensitive surface thereof. The imaging means preferably comprises a double prism and a combined field lens.
In some cases, the system may also include an element to focus an image of the edges between the reflection and transmission areas of the inclined reflector on the image forming means. Such an element is desirable when the edges between the reflection and light transmission areas of the reflecting means include between them a slit of very small width.
The axial separation of the tilting mirror and the collimating lens can be changed or chosen at will. However, the collimating lens can give virtual images that can cause measurement and indication errors when the mirror is relatively close to these images.
To avoid harmful effects due to virtual images, the surfaces (including the interior contacts) of the collimating lens may be coated to allow minimum reflection and the mirror is preferably formed with a non-reflecting central portion.
The reflecting means may extend 450 on the optical axis and preferably include a light transmitting plate covered with a thin film reflecting light. This film is preferably covered on the side of the light transmitting plate located closer to the collimating lens. The appended drawing represents, by way of example, various embodiments of the object of the invention.

Fig. 8 shows another variant using a single photoelectric cell and comprising a perforated disc shown at the end.
Fig. 9 shows the perforated disc of FIG. 8 in plan.
Fig. 10 is another variant of the self-collimating system.
For the sake of clarity, it is assumed that FIG. 1 shows the preferred arrangement of the auto-collimator system viewed in plan such that the plane mirror A whose inclination is to be indicated lies in a vertical plane (perpendicular to the plane of the drawing) and is mounted to tilt around a vertical axis. The optical axis aa of the system is in a horizontal plane (in the plane of the drawing and is formed by the line crossing the plane of the mirror and passing approximately in the center of this one. In the zero position of the mirror A, its plane extends strictly at right angles to this axis aa.
In the arrangement shown, a light source B is focused by a condenser C on a slit D1 in a plane reflector D extending in a vertical plane inclined at 45, on the optical axis a-a. The light beam exiting the slit D1 passes over a surface E with total reflection at 45- and from there through a collimating lens F to mirror A. The reflector E is not part of the basic system and is not part of the basic system. is intended only to deflect the optical axis aa by a right angle, as is often useful in practice. The direction of the length of the slit D1 of the inclined reflector D is vertical, this slit being parallel to the axis of inclination of the mirror A.
The collimating lens F is focused precisely on the slit Dl of the reflector D so that in the zero position of the mirror A this lens F forms on the reflected beam a laterally inverted image of the slit exactly superimposed on the slit real. However, when the mirror A is lowered from its zero position, the reflected beam of this inclined mirror is deflected laterally with respect to the oscillating beam and the image of the slit Dl is displaced laterally with respect to the real slit Dl, by so that the light falls on the reflector D on one side or the other of the slit formed therein.
The fi-. 2 is a diagram of the rays of the optical axis sticker system aa and showing the beam b coming from the source B, the convergent beam c coming from the condenser C, two beams d and e between the edges of the slot Dl formed in the reflector D and the collimator lens F and the collimated beam f between this lens F and the tilting mirror A which is assumed to be in its zero position.
Either the beam d or e can be taken as a divergent beam coming from one edge of the slit Dl up to the lens F in which case the other beam d (or e) represents the corresponding converging back beam, going from the lens F at the other edge of the slit Dl.
A preferred construction of the inclined reflector D consists of a glass plate having a light reflecting metallized coating covering the face of this plate closer to the lens F except for an elongated rectangular portion constituting the slit D1. The light reflecting film is made as thin as possible while remaining opaque.
Preferably, the surface of the plate is first covered with an anti-reflective coating to decrease the reflection of light in the area of the slit and the reflective coating is then formed on the anti-reflective coating. Another clear coating can then be applied to prevent oxidation of the reflective coating. For a collimator lens having a focal length of approximately 12.7 cm, the slit may be 5.1 mm in length and 1.5 mm in width, this being measured in the plane of the inclined reflector D.
Figs. 1 and 2 indicate an inclined reflector D of this construction, but the thickness of the light-reflecting coating is necessarily very exaggerated.
In the arrangement described above, the limiting pupil of the system is constituted by the infinable mirror A, the collimating lens F having a diameter large enough to receive all the light returned to it from the mirror A in. all the positions of it. For a mirror of about 25.4mm in diameter, the diameter of the collimator lens may be about 31mm.
Incident light from the inclined reflector D on one side of the slit Dl is reflected on either side of the apex of a double prism or roof prism G on the rear face of which a lens of Gl objective. Behind this lens prism assembly G, Gl are arranged two photoelectric cells J each intended to receive light reflected from one side of the slit D1. The part of the optical axis passing through the prism G and the lens G1 is indicated in al-al. The light sensitive surfaces of the photoelectric cells J are equally spaced on opposite sides of this branch of the optical axis.
The prism G and the lens Gl form on each photoelectric cell an image of the collimator lens F or of the mirror A so that the light is distributed over a broad, substantially constant area of the sensitive surface.
With this arrangement, the output current of each photoelectric cell J is theoretically zero in the zero position of mirror A, but in practice a small output current is obtained from each cell due to the effects of diffraction and aberration. tion which slightly disturbs the reflected image of the slit D1 superimposed on the actual slit D1 and also due to the residual reflection from the slit. For example, fig. 3 indicates the error appearing at the slit D1 in the inclined reflector D due to aberration effects in the collimator lens.
On each edge of the slit D1, the image reflected from the other edge of this slit causes a diffusion circle of width z to appear. Despite these effects due to aberration and diffraction, it being understood that the photoelectric cells J are tuned to each other, the differential output current of the cells is linear for the zero position of mirror A and varies linearly with the angle of inclination of the mirror on either side of the zero position. Thus the output current (i) of the two photoelectric cells J (P.C. (A) and P.C. (B) respectively) is represented graphically in fig. 4 depending on a variable tilt angle.
Due to aberration effects, the output current of each individual photocell J varies from the linear characteristic in the region of zero tilt, the width of this region being indicated in z since it corresponds to the width of the diffusion circle.
In addition, due to the residual scattered light inside the system, the output current of each photocell J can never fall below a certain minimum value io. However, the differential output current of the two J cells indicated by the y-y line maintains a linear characteristic across the zero tilt region.
Exact J-cell tuning can be easily achieved with silicone cells obtained by splitting a single silicone crystal element thus ensuring equal sensitivity on either side of the zero position.
In the diagram of fig. 2, the diverging beams towards the J cells coming from the parts of the inclined reflector D directly adjacent to the slit D1, are indicated in g1 and g2. Since mirror A is assumed to be in its zero position in the drawing, these beams g1, g2 could be considered to be due only to diffraction and aberration effects. An output circuit for the two photoelectric cells J is shown in fig. 5.
A differential output voltage is developed across resistors K and applied to a DC amplifier L. The amplified signal passes into a measuring instrument M giving a direct reading of the angle of inclination of the mirror A from its zero position. Instead of using precisely tuned photocells, a sensitivity balance can be achieved by deriving either of the K load resistors.
The measuring instrument may consist of a recording instrument giving a direct measurement of the variable angle of inclination of the mirror A when this inclination varies. For example, the sticker system can be used in the manner last indicated in conjunction with the invention which is the subject of Swiss Patent No (D. No 8527/63) relating to an apparatus for checking the flatness of a area.
Fig. 6 schematically shows a part of such a control apparatus, the mirror A being mounted to tilt according to the displacement (approximately perpendicular to the surface to be tested) of a feeler member N moving along said test surface <B> NI. </B> For this purpose,
the mirror A moves along a reference surface provided by a guide bar N 'and the self-generator which is not shown in FIG. 6 that the lens F is disposed with its optical axis aa (or at least the part of the optical axis containing the collimated beam parallel to the reference surface. With this arrangement the measurement of the variable angle of inclination of the mirror A provides an indication of the lack of flatness of the
surface tested compared to the reference surface. In the sticker system described above, the rear surface (furthest from the tilting mirror) of the lens F as well as the internal contact surface thereof (since it is preferred to use a doublet for collimation) tend to provide virtual images as indicated at x in FIG. 2.
These virtual images can give rise to annoying effects and to measurement errors when the mirror A is placed relatively close to the lens F, or is moved close to the latter in the apparatus described above for the control of the surface. To avoid these defects, the two surfaces of the lens F are preferably coated to have a minimum reflection. Alternatively or in addition, the central part of mirror A is masked or cut out as indicated in A1 so as to be dark and not reflective.
It is clear, however, that the described self-aligning system can also be used in another way, for example as part of an alignment telescope to control the alignment of large machines or large assemblies. In such an alignment telescope, an eyepiece may be arranged to view the image initially.
Various modifications of the described arrangement are possible. For example, in the arrangement described, the width of the slot D1 of the reflector D must be sufficient so that the beams diverging from both edges of the slot D1 are still separated at the prism G. Practical considerations may limit the distance over which this prism G can be placed relative to the slit Dl so that if a narrower slit Dl is needed, for example to decrease the total flux falling on the photoelectric cells J, an element P, such as, for example, the doublet shown can be introduced as shown in fia. 7.
In this arrangement the element P forms an image of the slit D1 on the image forming means which, in turn, forms on each cell J an image of the collimator lens or of the tilting mirror. Fig. 7 also serves to show a variation of these imaging means, the combination of the double prism and the field lens being replaced by a Q field lens.
In the variant of FIG. 8 only one photocell Jl is used instead of two. Together with this single cell Jl an openwork dis that R (see also FIG. 9) having a reflecting face Rl is used, an electric motor R2 driving this disk in rotation at a constant speed.
The image-forming means constituted by the double prism G combined with the field lens G1 form an image of the collimator lens F or of the mirror A on focusing means constituted by a collecting lens S and the double prism <B> SI </B> in combination.
In this way, the beams from the inclined reflector D are focused by means of the S-lens doublet and the <B> SI </B> prism to form an image of the slit <B> Dl </B> on the disc R, light coming from one side of the slot falling on one side of this disc and light coming from the other side of this slot falling on the other side of the disc.
Light from the <B> Dl </B> slit is thus transmitted through the openings of the rotating disk R onto the cell JI and light from the other side of the <B> Dl </B> slit. is reflected by the face RI of the disc on the cell Jl which thus supplies an output alternating current at the frequency of rotation of the disc multi folded by the number of openings.
In the zero tilt region of mirror A, the output current of cell JI is a direct current which arises due to the effects of diffraction and aberration and is therefore not considered, being lost at l AC amplifier to which the output current of the cell is applied before supplying the measuring instrument. With this variation, an extremely high sensitivity can be achieved by introducing filters of the usual type into the output circuit of the photoelectric cell in order to eliminate the residual harmonics which may appear.
In a few cases it can be useful, as shown in fig. 10, to eliminate the image-forming means constituted for example by the double prism G and the lens G ', by placing two small photoelectric cells J "adjacent to the inclined reflector D to directly receive the light by firing the lens. either side of the <B> Dl. </B> slot
In fig. 7, 8 and 10, only the <I> al - al </I> part of the optical axis of the sticker system has been shown since in each of these modifications, the part of the system not shown can be identical to that shown in fig. 1.
A modification can still be mentioned without being represented and which consists in replacing the inclined reflector D having the slit Dr by a small inclined reflector having the dimension of the slit. In this case, the beam coming from the condenser falls on this inclined reflector and is reflected on a collimator lens and the photoelectric means are sensitive to the light brought back from the inching mirror to pass on one or the other of these sides. of said inclined reflector.
