Process for the polymerization of butadiene The subject of German Auslegeschrift number 1115 457 of the applicant forms a process for the polymerization of organic compounds with olefinic double bonds, according to which combinations of compounds of monovalent magnesium with compounds of metals of the 4th-6th centuries are used as polymerization catalysts. Subgroup of the periodic table used. For the polymerization of butadiene, catalysts are off. Compounds of monovalent magnesium and titanium tetrachloride have been used, but polymers are obtained which have a relatively low proportion of 1,4-cis structure.
In a further development of this process, it has now been found that rubber-like polybutadienes with a substantially 1,4-cis structure can be obtained if combinations of compounds of monovalent magnesium and titanium tetraiodide are used as catalysts for the polymerization of butadiene. Gel-free elastomers can be obtained, the vulcanizates of which are characterized by high abrasion resistance and low heat generation when exposed to stress.
The compounds of monovalent magnesium can be prepared according to the information in the patent cited by methods known per se, for example they are obtained by pyrolysis of magnesium aryl halides, which are obtained from haloaryls and magnesium in complex-forming solvents, such as ether, or in inert solvents, such as high-boiling hydrocarbons, have been produced. The pyrolysis of the magnesium aryl halides mentioned is expediently carried out in vacuo at temperatures between about 150-250 ° C., the duration of the pyrolysis depending on the temperatures chosen.
In addition to magnesium (I) halides, the pyrolysis products can also contain aromatic compounds. It is noteworthy that non-pyrolyzed Grignard compounds, which are freed from the solvents used in their production, such as ethers or inert hydrocarbons, in combination with titanium tetraiodide can give usable results in the polymerization of butadiene.
The titanium tetraiodide is preferably used in amounts of about 10-50 percent by weight, calculated on magnesium (I) compounds. The lower limit of the amount of total catalyst, based on. butadiene used, is about 0.5 Ge weight percent.
The polymerization can be carried out without a solvent. But you can also carry out the polymerization in inert solvents, preferably of an aromatic nature. The solvent and the monomer must be free of disruptive impurities such as water, oxygen, polar substances and acetylenes. The reaction temperature is expediently kept within the limits of -10 to 70 C.
The polymerizations explained in the following examples were carried out in carefully dried vessels under the exclusion of air and moisture. The addition of the catalyst components and the solvent is carried out with highly purified, dried nitrogen flowing in the opposite direction. The Her position of the mixed catalyst from its components can th in the presence of the polymerized. Monomers or separately, but always with the exclusion of air and moisture. The solvents used were also carefully dried and freed from the air dissolved in them.
The polymerization and the work-up, which is possible by methods known per se, can be carried out either continuously or batchwise. the.
In the following examples the parts given are parts by weight.
Example 1 4 parts of pyrolyzed phenylmagnesium bromide are stirred with 1.5 parts of titanium tetraiodide in 200 parts of toluene until the red color of the titanium tetraiodide has disappeared and a brown-black suspension has formed. A solution of 200 parts of butadiene in 400 parts of toluene is then added. After 30 minutes, the polymerization sets in with the evolution of heat. The temperature is kept between 50 and 60. After a further 30 minutes, the solution had become highly viscous in the meantime, the polymerization is stopped by adding methanol, the polymer is precipitated by adding more methanol, washed, stabilized with a conventional antioxidant and dried at 50 in a vacuum drying cabinet.
