Description

The present invention relates to a heat insulating element which can be used for various thermal insulations.

This element is characterized in that it comprises a body of heat-insulating material constituted by foamed plastic material and of which at least part of the surface is covered with a layer of a material offering great resistance to heat.

This refractory material can be vermiculite, glass wool, rock wool, asbestos fiber, etc., so that the surface, thus treated, can withstand a temperature significantly higher than that of softening or melting of the fuge calorie material used.

According to a preferred embodiment, the coating of said body, which may be a plate or a shell of expanded polystyrene, may consist of a layer of vermiculite attached to the face to be protected by gluing, flocking, spraying, or any other. processes, the thickness of this layer of vermiculite being able to vary according to the temperature which the heat insulating element must withstand.

Alternatively, expanded polystyrene granules can be completely coated with vermiculite or other refractory material.

In the appended drawing given by way of indicative but non-limiting example, FIGS. 1 and 2 represent in perspective respectively a plate and a shell of expanded polystyrene coated with a refractory material.

Referring to the drawing and according to one embodiment, 1 represents a rectangular plate of expanded polystyrene and 2 a semi-tubular shell of the same material.

These two heat-insulating elements comprise, respectively, on their face intended to be placed in contact with the heating member, a layer 3, of vermiculite for example, applied by gluing, flocking, by spraying or otherwise.

According to a variant allowing a stuffing between two walls to be insulated, expanded polystyrene granules coated with vermiculite or other refractory material are used.

The purpose of this vermiculite layer is to insulate the expanded polystyrene from the heat source, which allows the plate, shell or granules, thus treated to withstand temperatures exceeding 1000 C while the polystyrene, used as is, undergoes an alteration, or even destruction, at around 800 C.
