Process for the production of trimeric ruthenium tetracarbonyl The aim of the invention is to produce trimeric ruthenium tetracarbonyl from organic ruthenium salts.
There are three representatives of carbonyl compounds of ruthenium described in the literature: an inconsistent, colorless liquid, which has the formula Ru (CO); a solid which crystallizes in orange-yellow crystals from benzene and whose composition was initially described by M. Manchot and W.
J. Manchot (Z.anorg.allg.Chemie 226 (1936) p.385) was given as Ru. (CO) 9 and a green crystallizing compound which W. Manchot (lc) has the formula [Ru (CO ) 413 was attributed. The stable form of the compound indicated by W. Manchot as Ru2 (CO) 9 has recently been used by E. Corey and L. Dahl (J.Am.Chem.Soe. 83 (1961) p. 2203) as [Ru (CO) 413 certainly. The structure of the green crystallizing compound has not yet been confirmed.
The previously known ways of producing trimeric ruthenium tetracarbonyl go either from ruthenium metal, in the form of a Metallschwam mes, or from inorganic ruthenium metal salts, such as. B. RuS, or Ruhalide, from which chen one lets act under the conditions of high pressure synthesis carbon monoxide.
In all cases, ruthenium pentacarbonyl is initially formed, which can be converted into the trimeric ruthenium tetracarbonyl by heating to 40-50 ° C. under the action of sunlight.
The disadvantage of these methods is that ruthenium pentacarbonyl, a volatile and less stable liquid, is formed first, which then has to be isolated, which is associated with inconvenient handling and a low yield of trimeric ruthenium tetracarbonyl in the further synthesis.
In no case could the formation of trimeric ruthenium tetracarbonyl be observed in the action of CO on inorganic ruthenium salts in a one-step process. The formation of trimeric tetracarbonyls of other metals of Group VIII of the periodic table could occur when organic salts of these metals, e.g.
B. on iron acetylacetonate, are not observed.
A process for the preparation of trimeric ruthenium tetracarbonyl has now been found, in which the disadvantages which occur due to the formation of ruthenium pentacarbonyl as an intermediate product can be avoided.
The invention consists in a process for the production of trimeric ruthenium tetracarbonyl from organic ruthenium salts and is characterized in that the organic ruthenium salts are mixed with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of an organic solvent at a temperature of 100 to 250 C and a pressure of 50-350 atm. Temperatures of 140-160 C and pressures of 150-200 at are preferably used.
For the process of the invention, organic ruthenium salts based on acetic acid or acetic acid derivatives, such as. B. basic ruthenium acetate, but preferably ruthenium acetylacetonate, is used.
The reaction pressure is expediently set by injecting a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen in a molar ratio of 5: 1 to 1: 1, preferably 2.5: 1 to 3: 1.
The organic solvents in particular are those in which ruthenium salts, carbon monoxide and hydrogen are soluble in reaction conditions. Preferably organic cal hydrocarbons, such as. B. benzene or lower aliphatic alcohols, such as. B. methanol, Ver use.
The process according to the invention not only achieves high yields, but also offers the further advantage that the trimeric ruthenium tetracarbonyl can be isolated very easily, since no significant byproducts which are insoluble in organic solvents are formed.
For better understanding, the invention is explained using the following examples. The process should not be limited to this embodiment; so z. B. the process can be carried out in any pressure vessel that can be shaken, stirred or vibrated. Examples 1. 3.20 g of ruthenium acetylacetonate are introduced into a stainless steel shaking autoclave with a capacity of 125 cm3 and, after the air has been displaced, 30 cm3 of methanol.
A mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen in a molar ratio of 3: 1 is then pressed into the autoclave up to a pressure of 155 atm and heated to 150 ° C. while shaking. The autoclave is left at 150 ° C. for approx. 4 hours with a slight decrease in pressure. After cooling, the autoclave is depressurized, the vented gas being passed through a cold trap with liquid air in order to crystallize any volatile Ru (CO) that may have formed. No Ru (CO) could be found.
After opening the autoclave, 1.17 g of [Ru (CO) 4] 3 were obtained, which corresponds to a yield, based on the ruthenium acetylacetonate used, of 76.3%.
2. In a shaking autoclave made of stainless steel with a capacity of 125 cm3, 1.06 g of ruthenium acetylacetonate and, after displacement of the air, 75 cm3 of benzene are introduced. The pressure was adjusted to 150 atm by injecting CO and H2 in a molar ratio of 3: 1 and the temperature was brought to 150 ° C. with shaking. The pressure decreased a bit.
After 4 hours, the reaction was terminated and the autoclave was let down after cooling, the vented gas again being passed through a trap cooled with liquid air. No Ru (CO) could be found.
The trimeric ruthenium tetracarbonyl completely dissolved in benzene is obtained by distilling off the solvent in vacuo. 0.35 g of [Ru (CO) 4] 3 resulted, which corresponds to a yield, based on ruthenium acetylacetonate, of 51,
5%. An analysis of the ruthenium content gave a value of 47.09% ruthenium, compared to the theoretical value of 47.65%.
3. 1.21 g of basic ruthenium acetate with 30.1% Ru and, after displacing the air, 7 cm3 of methanol are introduced into a stainless steel shaking autoclave with a capacity of 125 cm3.
The pressure was adjusted to 165 atm by forcing in CO and Hz in a molar ratio of 3: 1 and the temperature was brought to 150 with shaking. The pressure decreased a bit. After 3 hours the reaction was stopped and the car relaxed. The vented gas passed through a trap cooled with liquid air. No Ru (CO) ,, could be found in the cold trap. After opening, 0.05 g of trimeric ruthenium tetracarbonyl could be isolated as orange-red platelets at the bottom of the autoclave.
The methanolic mother liquor gave 0.130 g of [Ru (CO) 4] 3 after distilling off the methanol and recrystallizing the residue from acetone. The yield based on the basic ruthenium acetate was 23.4%.
