Composition for the treatment of non-textile keratin fibers and use of this composition for the treatment of the hair
The use of lower thiols, in particular α-mercaptocarboxylic acids such as, for example, thioglycolic acid or thiolaotic acid, is known for the treatment of keratin fibers.
It is admitted that during the process of the action of these thiols on the bond-SS-of the keratin, they transform into corresponding disulfides which, being of small molecular dimensions and soluble in water, are easily eliminated during washing. fiber.
Thus, they do not exercise or participate in any physical action on the starting keratin.
It has now been found that if one uses instead of these low molecular weight thiols polymers comprising in the constituent links of their molecule sulfhydryl groups, that is to say polysulfhydryl polymers soluble in aqueous medium, the polydisulphides formed either by oxidation due to the action of an external agent or by oxidation inherent in the process of action on keratin, become less soluble in water.
As a result, the action of the polysulfhydryl polymers on the keratin is accompanied by a deposition of additional polymeric material. This insolubilization which accompanies the action of the aforementioned polysulfhydryl polymers on the fibers has advantages, namely: the reinforcement of the mechanical properties of the treated fibers, the possibility of maintaining a fiber in a chosen position, after the latter has been subjected to the chemical action of the polysulfhydryl polymers considered, etc.
In other words, when the keratin fibers are treated with these polysulfhydryl polymers, there is a joint chemical and physical action and fibers are generally obtained whose mechanical properties are advantageously modified.
The subject of the present invention is a composition for the treatment of non-textile keratin fibers, in particular human hair, in particular for their permanent shaping and for their restoration and reinforcement when they are damaged. This composition is characterized in that it contains at least one polysulfhydryl polymer which is soluble in an aqueous medium, that is to say in a medium containing water.
The composition according to the invention makes it possible to obtain, on the one hand, an improvement in the mechanical properties of these fibers and, on the other hand, a permanent deformation of these fibers and also has in this latter field important advantages which are mentioned above. below.
Polysulfhydryl polymers can be obtained from polymers formed beforehand and having in their constituent links suitable reactive functional groups allowing the introduction, by known methods, of the thiol group.
Among the polymers which are particularly suitable as starting products for the preparation of polysulfhydryl polymers, mention may be made of polymers originally having, as a reactogenic group, the group:
EMI1.1
As is well known, this group is present in polymers which result from a copolymerization of maleic anhydride with a copolymerizable monomer, that is to say having an active double bond.
As suitable starting polymers for preparing the polysulfhydryl polymers, there may be mentioned: - copolymers of an aliphatic vinyl ether
or aromatic and maleic anhydride, by
in particular the copolymers of vinylmethylether,
vinylethyl ether or vinylphónylether and an-
maleic hydride.
-the copolymers of an aroma vinyl compound
tick and maleic anhydride, in particular
copolymers of styrene or of its homologues
and maleic anhydride.
-Copolymers of a monoolefin and anhy-
maleic drid, in particular the copolymers of
ethylene and maleic anhydride.
Since we have every interest in having the maximum number of reactogenic groups
EMI2.1
in the molecule of the copolymer used in order to be able to introduce the greatest number of thiol groups, copolymers are preferably used in which the proportion of maleic anhydride / active double bond monomer of the aforementioned type tends towards the ratio of 1.
The degree of polymerization n of the various polymers which can be used can vary within fairly wide limits and this is a factor which must be considered. take it into account dif ferently, depending on the family of polymers referred to.
Indeed, the choice of this degree of polymerization n depends, on the one hand on the possibility of penetration of the polymer studied inside the fiber, and on the other hand on the advantage of using polymers soluble in water at a basic pH, the state of permeability of the fiber to be treated, the application conditions (temperature, etc.).
Thus, for example, in the case of using the styrene / maleic anhydride copolymer, this degree of polymerization should not exceed the value of about 20.
Obviously, one cannot give stringent values for all polymers, but it can generally be said that the average molecular weight of the starting polymer used should be less than about 4000 for solubility in water. satisfactory water.
The introduction of the thiol group into the aforementioned polymers can be carried out advantageously by reaction of aminothiol of the formula HS-R-NHR ′ in which R denotes a straight-chain alkylene radical preferably comprising from 2 to 4 carbon atoms and which can or bear side alkyl radicals which may have up to 4 carbon atoms, or be substituted or not by a carboxyl group or by a carbalkoxy group and R ′ denotes hydrogen or a lower alkyl such as CH3, QHg, etc.
Among the advantageous aminothiols, there may be mentioned:
-P-mercaptoethylamine, N-methyl-ss-mercaptoethylamine,
-cysteine,
-ethyl cysteinate, etc.
The reaction with regard to the reaction anhydride group takes place according to the following scheme:
EMI2.2
R and R 'having the meaning indicated above.
The polymers thus obtained, possessing a free carboxy group next to the thiol function, are soluble in water if they are used in the form of their sols with alkali metals, ammonia or amines.
The following examples show how polysulfhydryl polymers can be prepared:

50.5 g, ie 0.25 mol-g, of structural unit, of styrene / maleic anhydride copolymer, in which the number n is equal to 8, copolymer known under the trade name of SMA 1000 AA resin from Butadiene Texas, is dissolved. Butadiene tion, in 200 cc of anhydrous acetone. This product is given as having a styrene monomer / maleic anhydride ratio of 1: 0.9.
To this solution is added, at room temperature and under a nitrogen atmosphere, 0.225 mol-g of p-mercapto-ethylamine hydrochloride. Then slowly added 0.225 mol-g of triethylamine dissolved in 50 cc of acetone, maintaining the temperature between 15 and 20 ° C. The mixture is then brought to the boil for three hours. The triethylamine hydrochloride thus thinned out after cooling is filtered off and washed with a little acetone.
The acetone filtrate is evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure and under a nitrogen atmosphere. The residue obtained is purified by dissolving in a 10% sodium hydroxide solution and reprecipitation after filtering off with a dilute hydrochloric acid solution. 60 g of the desired sulfhydryl polymer is thus obtained in the form of a white powder which is then dried under vacuum.

The properties of resistance to deformation conferred on keratin fibers by the treatment with the composition according to the invention are advantageous in the cosmetics field.
Polysulfhydryl polymers are particularly useful when used for the permanent deformation of keratin fibers. In fact, in this case the fixing with the aid of oxidizing agents is not compulsory. As indicated above, polysulfhydryl polymers are capable of transforming either when they reduce the K-S-S-K residues of keratin, or by air oxidation, into sparingly soluble crosslinked disulfides and their molecular weight is at least doubled.
The deposition of polydisulphide polymers in and on the fiber gives the latter a strong reinforcement which is sufficient to maintain it long enough in its new position to thus allow the oxygen in the air to complete the reconstitution of the K-S-H into K-S-S-K.
The concentration of the polysulfhydryl polymer in the composition according to the invention is preferably between 1 and 200%.
The examples below illustrate the composition according to the invention and its use for treating the hair.
Example 1:
The composition used has the following constitution:
Polymer resulting from the action of p-mercaptoethylamine on the copolymer of styrene and maleic anhydride
obtained according to Example I. 20g
Urea. 5 g
Ammonia q. s. p. pH 9, 8-9, 9
Water q. s. p. 100 cc
The hair is impregnated with a solution and the hair is wound on curlers according to the technique usually used for producing a permanent wave.
Each lock is saturated with the solution described above, then, after a contact time of 10 to 15 minutes, it is rinsed very carefully with hot water and the procedure is carried out using a water solution. oxygenated at 6 volumes in the so-called fixation phase. After contact with this oxidizing solution for 5 minutes, it is rinsed again thoroughly. A permanent deformation of the hair is thus obtained with very good stability with respect to humidity and as a function of time.
Example 2:
The composition used is formed by mixing:
Polymer resulting from the action of p-mercaptoethylamine on the copolymer of styrene and maleic anhydride
obtained according to Example II. 15 g
Ammonia q. s. p .. pH 9, 8
Water q. s. p. 100 cc
This solution applied to the hair according to the technique of Examples 1 and 2 also leads to a permanent deformation of the hair of very good quality.
Example 3:
The hair is impregnated with the solution described either in Example 1 or in Example 2 and styling is carried out according to the usual technique. A permanent deformation is thus obtained which confers on the styling thus produced holding properties much superior to those obtained with the usual methods. During this styling operation, which comprises the following stages: moistening, rolling up on curlers and drying, the excess ammonia evaporates.
Part of the polydisulphides formed therefore remains in and on the fiber, which results in conferring on the hair the properties mentioned above and this by an operation of great ease.
Example 4:
The composition has the following constitution:
Polymer resulting from the action of 3-mercaptoethylamine on the ethylene / maleic anhydride copolymer:
obtained according to Example III. 16 g
Urea .. 5 g
Ammonia q. s. p. pH 9, 7
Water q. s. p. looce
The hair is impregnated with this solution and the hair is wound on the curlers according to the technique usually used for producing a permanent wave.
Each lock is saturated with the solution described above, then after a contact time of 10 to 15 minutes, it is rinsed again very abundantly. A permanent deformation of the hair is thus obtained with very good stability vis-à-vis humidity and as a function of time.
