Beim Betrieb der Zelle wird das Natrium ver braucht, und zwar entsteht einerseits aus dem Amal gam reines Quecksilber, anderseits kombiniert sich das Natrium mit dem Methanol zum Alkoholat. Durch das im Methanol vorhandene Wasser ent steht in einer Sekundärreaktion NaOH, während der Methylalkohol zurückgebildet wird. Somit werden beim Betrieb der Zelle nur Natrium und Wasser ver braucht, wogegen sich :das Methanol ständig regene riert;
Fig. 3).
Fuel cell In addition to the long-known galvanic cells, whose current-supplying process is the mostly reversible change in the oxidation level of metals, there are also so-called fuel cells that can be operated with solid, liquid or gaseous fuels. The efficiency of these fuel cells is significantly higher than that of heat engines and generally reaches values of up to. to 70%.
So far, the coal and oxyhydrogen elements in particular have been worked on intensively. The technical and economic difficulties caused by the need for high temperatures, high pressures, expensive electrodes, etc., are considerable in both cases and have by no means been overcome, so that these elements have not yet been of any far-reaching economic importance.
It has now been found that a useful element can be built up on the decomposition of sodium amalgam or the oxidation of sodium metal as a current-supplying process. The reaction equation for the element is: Na + OH- + H + - #. NaOH + 1/2 H2 or in the presence of oxygen (oxygen electrode): 2 Na + 2 H, + 2 OH- + 1/2 02 .- @ 2 NaOH + 1120.
As already mentioned, the fuel in this cell is sodium in the form of amalgam, while water or oxygen serves as an oxidizing agent or as a supplier of the required hydroxyl ions. The oxidizing agent does not come into direct contact with the sodium, but rather via a medium which regulates the reaction rate in the form of a lower aliphatic alcohol.
The cell according to the invention comprises a cathode made of sodium amalgam, a graphite anode and, as the electrolyte, a lower aliphatic alcohol containing an initiator. If necessary, a diaphragm delimiting the anode space can be provided.
In the following, the invention is explained in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, for example: In Fig. 1, a laboratory scale cell is illustrated. In a glass vessel 1 of 50 mm diameter, a diaphragm 2 made of fired clay 40 mm in diameter, 100 mm in height and 3-5 mm in wall thickness is embedded in such a way that its underside has a distance of about 5 mm from the bottom of the vessel.
The space between the glass vessel and the clay junction is filled with sodium amalgam 3, the sodium content of which should not exceed 1% by weight. The anode compartment 4 formed by the diaphragm is provided with a graphite anode 5 of 20 mm in diameter and filled with methanol containing small amounts of water. The current flow is triggered with the help of an initiator (e.g.
B. 1.0 mg hydrogen peroxide). In the further course of the process, the intermediate ent sodium ethoxide enables the transport of electricity instead of the initiator. The voltage of the cell is around 2 volts, and it delivers around 2 W / h per g of sodium. The performance of such a cell per unit area and volume can be increased considerably by adding 15-30% hydrogen peroxide.
In the cell described above, 0.001 m3 of hydrogen per g of sodium are also formed. When using an oxygen electrode, there is of course no hydrogen formation.
During operation of the cell, the sodium is consumed, on the one hand pure mercury is produced from the amalgam, on the other hand the sodium combines with the methanol to form alcoholate. The water present in the methanol creates NaOH in a secondary reaction, while the methyl alcohol is reformed. Thus, only sodium and water are consumed when operating the cell, whereas: the methanol is constantly being regenerated;
Crystalline sodium hydroxide collects on the diaphragm arch. If this cell is used as a secondary cell in a chlor-alkali electrolysis to recover electricity, the particular advantage over the previously known methods of using the decomposition energy of the amalgam is that the sodium hydroxide is not obtained in aqueous solution, but in crystalline form.
In addition to its high energy yield, the cell described thus saves the costs of evaporating the sodium hydroxide solution.
When translating to the technical scale, a number of cells are connected in series in a manner known per se, such as. B.: from Fig. 2 he can be seen. As can be seen from this drawing, the mercury is pumped up in a container 11, amalgamated in this by simply adding metallic sodium and from there distributed via the distributor 12 to the cells, in such a way that only one cell in the same Time is fed with amalgam. This measure is necessary because the series connection would otherwise be short-circuited.
The cells 13, 13 ', 13 ", etc. process the amalgam and then give the pure mercury to the mercury pump via a collecting tube 15. Before this, the mercury passes through an interrupter 14, for example in the form of a paddle wheel, to interrupt the voltage Otherwise, the cells cannot be connected in series in order to increase the voltage. The mercury freed from sodium is then pumped up again by the gear pump 16 for amalgamation.
There is a separate pump and NaOH sewage treatment plant for the anolyte and alcohol, which only have to be put into operation from time to time to remove the crystallized NaOH from the diaphragm base.
If three cells of the type described are connected in series, an electric motor of 6 volts and 0.2 amps is kept in continuous operation for 20 hours with 10 g of sodium, with a corresponding proportion of hydrogen being obtained that is accessible for further utilization can be made.
The cell described and the operating method that can be carried out with it are suitable for generating electrical energy on any scale. B. in the grosstechni rule for constant power generation he required measures are known to the expert ge. The space requirement of the cell is small; power / volume unit of the order of magnitude of 30 kW / m3 can be achieved.
The diaphragm can also be omitted in the cell described. In this case, for example, in the presence of air or oxygen in a flat cell, a porous and multiply notched graphite plate is used as the anode and embedded vertically in a flat glass or plastic housing (see FIG. 3). The anode is protected from direct contact with the amalgam by a closed textile fabric.
In an arrangement according to FIG. 3 (FIG. 3 shows a plan view enlarged 10 times), in which 21 denotes the amalgam, 22 the textile fabric, 23 the graphite anode and 24 the electrolyte, the output is about 30 mA / cm2.
Using an alcohol or alcohol as the electrolyte, metals that are more noble than hydrogen, such as. B. aluminum, zinc or the like, ver use as generator fuel, both with and without a diaphragm.
