Method of making concrete The present invention relates to a method of making concrete with frost resistance and improved plasticity.
We have long sought to improve the qualities of concrete; more particularly, attempts have been made to increase its mechanical strength, its resistance to frost, its impermeability and the effectiveness of the binder.
The mechanical resistance which depends on the dosage of water increases when the latter decreases; to improve it, plasticizers were used in the concrete.
Frost resistance, as well as impermeability, are dramatically increased by the incorporation into concrete of air bubbles in small quantities; to obtain this result, attempts have been made to develop air entrainers making it possible to organize the voids inside the concrete.
The best efficiency of the binder is ensured by the deflocculation of the cement grains following the complete wetting of the cement.
If all these effects are to be combined in a single product, it must meet the following requirements - do not alter the setting of the cement whatever the conditions (water dosage, temperature, type of water and aggregates), - do not alter the mechanical resistance, over the long term, - allow an effective reduction in the quantity of water required, - allow easy adjustment of the air entrainment and achieve this in the form very small bubbles (5 to 50 microns) and very evenly distributed. In addition, these bubbles must remain absorbed by the concrete elements so that the latter retains its entrained air content, - give the concrete lasting resistance to frost,
the percentage of air incorporated being of the order of 4%, - do not influence the withdrawal or the resuscitation, unless they are reduced.
In order to obtain a product which makes it possible to respond to the conditions indicated above, attempts have been made to use a detergent having good wetting properties, for example of the aryl-alkyl-sulfonate type; but during numerous comparative tests which will be summarized later, it was found that to have a product giving good results, it was not enough, contrary to what one might think, that this product had a texture comparable to usual detergents.
It was also necessary that its molecular structure allow it, at least by bonds operated by OH ions, to associate with calcium silicates and silico-aluminates, present in hydrated cement and also often present in aggregates.
It was also necessary that the aryl-alkyl-sulfonate used was not a salt of a metal which could be troublesome in the concrete in the free state or not; in fact, whatever the form in which the metal is introduced, during the neutralization of the aryl-alkyl-sulfonic acid, an excess remains which is found in part, subsequently, in the adjuvant, this which is particularly troublesome.
On the other hand, among the surfactant adjuvants currently used, the lignosulphonates obtained from bisulphite residues from the manufacture of pulp have the drawback of being often impure and poorly defined and of comprising products such as sugars that create bad side effects on concrete.
We have thus been led to think that a good adjuvant should have, compared with the usual detergents used and most often comprising a C12 alkyl chain, a particular structure offering affinities for silicates or silico-aluminates on both sides. other of the sulfonated radical.
The present invention therefore relates to a process for manufacturing concrete with improved frost resistance and plasticity and which process is characterized in that an aryl-alkyl-sulfonate of an alcohol or of an alcohol is incorporated into this concrete. amine in a proportion of between 0.2% o and 1% relative to the cement constituting the concrete.
This product thus having, on either side of the sulfonated radical, functions which can be associated at least by interfacial phenomena with the constituents of the concrete.
The novel adjuvant which is incorporated according to the present process can be obtained from by-products of the manufacture of synthetic cumene, sulfonated and subsequently neutralized with an amine, such as an ethanolamine, a propanolamine or a cyclic amine.
The by-products of the synthetic manufacture of cumene (mono iso-propyl-benzene) are obtained together and they are constituted by the various higher homologues such as di-iso-propyl-benzene, tri-iso-propyl-benzene, tetra -iso-propyl-benzene and poly-iso-propyl-benzene.
The sulfonation of these higher homologs leads to the corresponding monosulfonic acids and the neutralization of these acids gives sulfonates which are endowed with wetting, foaming and dispersing surfactant properties, which are remarkable compared to the surfactant adjuvants currently used.
The presence of these various higher homologs makes it possible to adjust the lengths of the alkyl chains and at the same time the surfactant properties of the sur factant obtained. For example, for certain concrete aggregates, such as micaceous aggregates and limes, it is advantageous to have an adjuvant having wetting properties that are more pronounced than the foaming properties; mixtures of amine di and tri-iso-propyl-benzene sulphonate will therefore preferably be used.
On the other hand, for other aggregates such as easily wettable gneisses, it will be preferable, in order to develop the foaming properties of the product, to mainly use the tri and tetra-iso-propyl-benzene. Thus, the by-products of the manufacture of cumene make it possible to adapt and dose the various constituents of the admixture by simply mixing neighboring bodies in order to obtain the product corresponding exactly to the properties which it is sought to give to the concrete.
<I> Example </I> A crushed gneiss concrete was produced, with the ring of 10 m / m of well-defined particle size, with a poor dosage of 250 kg of cement per m-3. The reference cement has the following composition and characteristics

Concrete has the following composition
EMI0002.0047
Cement <SEP> 250
<tb> Sand <SEP> 800
<tb> Gravel <SEP> 1250
<tb> Ratio <SEP> Water / Cement <SEP> 1.50 These various components are introduced into a mixer type Richier concrete mixer, with an inclined axis and tilting emptying.
After mixing for 4 minutes (including 30 sec dry, then 3 min 30 sec after introducing the quantity of water) the air occluded in the concrete is measured using the concrete aerometer, Maurice Perrier type . An air percentage of 1.4 to 1.6% is noted after 4 minutes of stirring.
It is known that for concrete, the most favorable dose of occluded air from the point of view of workability, and above all resistance to frost, is situated, after placing the concrete, between 4 and 5%.
The preparation of the same concrete is therefore started again, by introducing, according to the present invention, 0.5% o (per thousand) of the weight of the cement in the mixing water, of a preparation containing 50% of an aryl-alkyl -polyethanolamine sulfonate, obtained from the by-products of the manufacture of synthetic cumene, sulfonated and subsequently neutralized with a mixture of ethanolamine.
The occluded air is measured again after 4 minutes of mixing, a percentage of occluded air is noted of 4.6%.
It can be seen, after tests, that the adjuvant is indeed a plasticizer; it reduces bleeding; it improves the impermeability of the cement, it entrains air and increases resistance to frost. The other properties of concrete are relatively unmodified.
