The present invention relates to an installation for adjusting the fuel flow to the power unit of a helicopter, comprising a compressor supplying a combustion device, and driven by a turbine powered by the gases coming from the combustion device, and a turbine mechanically independent of the compressor turbine, driven only by the exhaust from the compressor turbine and driving the helicopter rotor,
this installation comprising a throttle valve for the flow of fuel, and control means for controlling this valve on the one hand as a function of the speed of the turbine driving the rotor of the helicopter and of on the other hand depending on the compressor discharge pressure.
According to the invention, this installation is charac terized by an arrangement such that, during the acceleration of the motor unit, the action on the throttle valve of the means for controlling this valve as a function of the speed of the rotor of the engine. The helicopter is interrupted and is replaced by the action on this valve of a means to control it as a function of the speed of the compressor, so that, during acceleration, the adjustment of the throttle valve takes place depending on the discharge pressure and the speed of the compressor, so as to prevent the combustion device from being subjected to pumping or to temperatures above a given value.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention. Fig. 1 is a schematic representation of this embodiment, FIG. 2 schematically represents the servomotor device subjected to the action of the temperature at the inlet of the compressor, FIG. 3 shows a detail.
The installation shown regulates the supply of a power unit of a helicopter comprising a compressor supplying a combustion device and driven by a turbine supplied by the gases coming from the combustion device, and a turbine mechanically independent of the turbine. compensator, driven only by the compressor turbine exhaust and driving the helicopter rotor.
Fuel under pressure enters a main line 60, as indicated by the arrow, and passes through a filter 62. A relief valve 64 prevents fuel pressure from exceeding a given value. The fuel coming from the main line 60 passes through a calibrated orifice 66 of the main choke valve 68. The fuel thus metered by the orifice 66 then arrives in a line 70 leading to the power unit. A valve 72 is mounted between the line 60 and the discharge line. This valve 72 which maintains at a given value the pressure drop in the metering orifice 66 com takes a piston 74, a diaphragm 76 and a res out 78.
The underside of diaphragm 76 is subjected to the pressure of the fuel downstream of the throttle valve. The upper face of the diaphragm is subjected to the pressure of the fuel upstream of the throttle valve. Fluid under pressure coming from the pipe 60 passes through the port 80 formed in the side wall of the piston 74. The latter has sufficient clearance in its bore to allow the fuel coming from this port to reach the upper face of the diaphragm 76. By allowing high pressure fuel to pass through to the upper face of the diaphragm in this way, a damping effect is obtained. The metered fuel in line 70 then passes a manually operated shut-off valve 84.
This valve is kinematically connected to its main control lever 86 by means of a member 88 exhibiting play. The stop valve 84 is intended to positively interrupt the flow of this fuel when the control lever is brought into the position of. closing. The metered fuel, passing through the shut-off valve 84, enters a pipe 90 and, from there, into a chamber 92 and, through a shut-off valve 96 subjected to the action of the overspeeds, the fuel comes to the device. engine group combustion unit (see arrow VM).
The main throttle valve 68 can be actuated, in an emergency, by a manual control comprising a rack gear 370, 371. This valve has an auxiliary throttle 100 communicating with a chamber 102 containing a servo-piston 104. This valve has an auxiliary throttle 100 communicating with a chamber 102 containing a servo-piston 104. This valve chamber opens into a pipe 108 opening through an orifice 110. The free cross section of this orifice 110 depends on the position of the lever 112. The fuel flowing through 100, 102 and <B> 108 </B> is subjected, according to the opening given to the orifice 110, to a certain pressure inside the chamber 102. The piston 104 displaced by the variations of this pressure causes the displacement of the rod 114 of the valve of the valve. throttling integral with this piston 104 by modifying the free cross section of the calibrated orifice 66.
The lever 112, which varies the opening of the orifice 110, pivots around a point 118 and between its other end and the servo-piston 104, is disposed a compression spring 132. The lever 112 occupies a position. tion determined by the value of a force transmitted by a lever 120 and by a force transmitted by rollers 124 carried by a rod 122.
The lever 120 transmits to the lever 112, with a view to adjusting the throttle valve, the variations in the discharge pressure of the engine compressor, while the rod 122 selectively transmits to it either the variations in the speed of the turbine causing the compressor associated with a temperature correction, ie variations in the speed of the free turbine driving the helicopter rotor.
The lever 120 is subjected to the antagonistic action of the bellows 126 and 128. The interior of the bellows 126 is subjected to a vacuum while the interior of the bellows <B> 128 </B> is exposed to the discharge pressure P3 of the pump. com presser, so that these bellows apply to the lever 120 a force which is a function of the absolute discharge pressure of the compressor.
As the compressor discharge pressure increases, the force applied to the lever 120 lowers the lever 120 and lowers the rollers 124 by slightly lowering the right end of the lever 112, whereby the flow of fuel exiting the compressor. orifice 110 is reduced. This results in an increase in the pressure prevailing in the chamber 102 below the piston 104, which moves the latter upwards against the force exerted by a spring 130 mounted between the piston and a fixed point. . This displacement results in an increase in the opening of the main throttle valve integral with the piston 104.
This upward movement of the rod 114 of the latter valve as well as of the servo-piston 104 produces a compensating force exerted on the right end of the lever 112 by means of a return spring 132 interposed between the lever 112 and the piston 104, which returns the levers 112 and 120 to a position of equilibrium.
The rod 122 acts as a reduction member via the rollers 124 arranged between the levers 120 and 122. The longitudinal displacement of this rod 122 is selectively controlled by the lever 142 and the rod 144, the latter acting by the 'Intermediate of the angled lever 146 articulated at 302 (FIG. 3) and resting by the roller 304 on the upper end of the rod 144. The rod 122 ends with a stop 308 on which protrudes laterally a small rod 300; a spring 306 is mounted between this stop and a fixed point so as to constantly push this stop to the right.
In front of the small rod 300 is disposed the end of the lever 142 pivoting around the point 192 (fig. 1) and which is subjected at its end opposite to the lever 122 and to its stop, to the thrust of the rod 194 which transmits the variations. speed of the compressor turbine and the inlet temperature in the compressor to the rod 122 through the small rod 300. This causes a displacement of the rollers 124 and consequently a modification of the transmission ratio between the levers 120 and 122.
The rod 122 is controlled through the lever 142 only during acceleration, in order to avoid excessive temperatures and pumping. But, in stable conditions, the rod 122 is controlled only by the vertical rod 144 which pushes the pivoting elbow lever 146 in contact with the stop 308 when the latter is not moved away from the elbow lever under the effect of the support. lever 142 on the protruding rod 300.
The rod 144 is itself controlled by a part 148 which pivots at 150 and the left end of which ends in a fork 162 pushed back by a spring not shown in contact with a roller 154 pushed by a spring 156 and mounted at the right end of a bar 158. This bar 158 rests on a cam 160 which is rotated by the main control handle 86.
The left end of bar 158 is connected by a rod 162 to a servo motor 164 comprising a chamber 180 to a servo-piston 182 whose displacement is proportional to the NC speed of the mechanically independent turbine driving the rotor of the 'helicopter in such a way that this displacement causes the displacement of the right end of the bar 158, including the roller 154, by tilting the bar on the cam 160, the position of which depends on the desired speed.
The spring 156 maintains the roller 154 in contact with the upper surface of the fork 152 so that the bar 158 will always pivot in contact with the cam 160 by rotating the part 148 around the pivot 150 and imparting a translational movement to the shaft. vertical rod 144 which then modifies its position according to the speed of the mechanically independent turbine. This change in position is, in turn, transmitted through the lever 146 and the rod 122 to the choke valve so as to adjust the latter.
The servomotor 164 is controlled by a regulator 168 located in the lower left corner of FIG. 1. This regulator 168, which is of the flyweight type, is controlled by the mechanically independent turbine which drives the rotor of the helicopter.
The centrifugal force exerted by the regulator weights 168 and opposed to the action of a spring 170 determines the vertical displacement of a pilot valve 172, whereby, in the case of the predominance of centrifugal force, fuel subjected to high pressure from line 60, flows through lines 174, 176 and 178 to chamber 180 of servomotor 164 under the underside of servo-piston 182, or, in the case of predominance from the spring 170, fuel subjected to a low pressure leaves this chamber through this pipe 178 to the pipe 184, passing through the valve 172.
It will be noted that the chamber 182a above the servo piston 182 constantly receives fuel under high pressure through the line 186.
The movement of the servo-piston 182 acts on the spring 170 via the lever 188 so as to rebalance the force exerted by the regulator weights and to immobilize the valve 172 and the servo-piston 182. The position of the servo -piston 182 is thus, at all times, proportional to the NF speed of the mechanically independent turbine and the left end of the longitudinal bar 158 occupies a position depending on the speed of this turbine.
On the other hand, between the ends of the bar 158, the position of the cam 160 controlled by the manual control lever depends on the desired speed, whereby the right end of the bar 158 determines a correction proportional to the speed. speed error at any time.
When the load applied to the helicopter's rotors is suddenly reduced for any reason, this causes the rotor and the mechanically independent turbine to start rotating at a speed greater than their normal speed. The weights of the regulator 168 therefore move outward by lifting the valve 172, so that fluid subjected to a high pressure can exert its action on the underside of the servo-piston 182 and move it upwards.
By means of the lever 188, the spring 170 is compressed to re-establish the balance with the central trifugal force of the weights, which immobilizes the valve <B> 172, </B> as well as the servo-piston 182. The new The position of the servo-piston 182 is transmitted through the intermediary of the link 162 to the bar 158 so as to tilt the fork 152 of the part 148.
The latter then rotates counterclockwise on the pivot 150, thus moving the rollers 124 by 144 and 146 in the direction corresponding to a decrease in the fuel flow rate corresponding to the output pressure of the compressor, applied to the bellows 128.
Stop valve 96 is controlled by servo-piston 182. At a given excess speed, upward movement of servo-piston 182 moves stop valve 96 to the closed position, so as to prevent flow of water. fuel to the motor unit.
Since the relative inertia of the power unit with respect to the helicopter rotor is such that dangerous excessive speeding could easily cause the destruction of the power unit if the normal elements controlling the fuel flow alone ensured, in some cases Under such conditions, the sudden decrease in the flow of fuel, the servo-piston 182 is the best indicator of excess speed and acts in a substantially instantaneous manner to regulate or interrupt the flow of fuel.
During acceleration, the rollers 124 carried by the rod 122 are moved by the vertical lever 142 and the rod 194, the action of the lever 146 on the rod 122 then being interrupted. The left end of the rod 194 cooperates with a cam 196 which can both be driven by a reciprocating movement along its vertical geometric axis and rotate around this axis. To the left of the cam 196 is placed a regulator 198 detecting the speed of the compressor and consequently of the turbine driving it.
This regulator 198 acts on a lever 200 by means of a vertical rod 202, articulated on this pivoting lever, the right end of which cooperates with a spring 204, while its left end varies the opening of an orifice 206. As a result, any variation in the speed of the compressor modifies the cross section of the orifice and consequently the pressure prevailing inside a chamber 208 located below the cam 196. The pressure prevailing in this chamber. chamber 208 controls the position of a servomotor piston 210 which, in turn, vertically moves the cam 196 with which this piston is integral.
A chamber 212 located above the upper face of the piston 210 is continuously supplied with high pressure fuel coming from 60 via a pipe 214. This high pressure fuel passes through a constriction 216 formed in the piston 210. and from there gains the chamber 208. The pressure prevailing in the latter varies in a manner corresponding to the variations in cross section of the orifice 206 which are determined by the regulator 198.
As in the case of the servomechanism described above, any modification of the position of the servo piston 210 and of the cam 196 varies the compression of the spring 204, the action of which determines the opening of the orifice 206 for which the mechanism is in equilibrium. Thus, the cam 196 has, for each speed of the compressor, a different axial position.
The cam 196 is driven in rotation around its vertical geometric axis under the influence of the temperature at the inlet of the compressor by a pinion 220. The mechanism controlling this pinion is shown schematically in FIG. 2. A small fraction of the air admitted to the compressor circulates through pipes 224 and 226 around the bellows 228 which expands or contracts depending on the temperature of this intake air. The bellows 228 is articulated on a vertical lever 230 which, at its lower end, controls a pilot valve 232.
This pilot valve 232 varies the opening of the orifice 234 which receives fuel under high pressure from a pipe 236: This fuel under high pressure flows to the right side 238 of a servo-piston 240, while the valve 232 regulates through the port 234 the pressure exerted on the left side 242 of the piston 240. It follows that any variation in the position of the pilot valve 232 varies the position of the servo-piston 240 as well. than that of the rack 244 being integral with this piston, which rotates the pinion 220 carried by the cam 196 (FIG. 1).
The cam 196 also comprises, at its upper end, radial cam surfaces 250 and 252 (FIG. 1) providing additional security, by acting on the left end of a lever 254 and an arm 256 respectively. The latter is integral with a rod 258 which can move vertically. Thus, the cam 196 can move the horizontal rod 194 and the radial cam surfaces 250 and 252 can act on the lever 254 and on the arm 256 respectively to act in both cases on the rod 122 via the lever 142. .
If, for example, it is assumed that the speed of the compressor has increased until it reaches a limit value, in order to ensure optimum efficiency and safety for the motor unit, it is necessary to prevent any further increase in this speed and for this purpose the cam surface 250 comes into contact with the left end of the upper lever 254 and rotates it clockwise around its hinge 260, which moves the part 148 counterclockwise of a watch around its pivot 150.
This movement is transmitted by the vertical rod 144 to the lever 146 and to the rod 122 so as to move the latter in the direction which corresponds to a reduction in the flow of fuel for a given pressure at the outlet of the compressor.
On the contrary, the downward movement of the cam 196 in response to a decrease in the speed of the compressor, which speed thus approaches a dangerously low number of revolutions per minute, brings the cam surface 252 into contact with the arm 256 and lowers the latter at the same time as the rod 258. This movement ultimately determines the rotation of the lever 286 in the anti-clockwise direction around its pivot 266, pushing the left end of the part 148 upwards , this movement is transmitted by the vertical rod 144 to the lever 146 and to the rod 122 which is moved in a direction corresponding to an increase in fuel flow rate for a given pressure at the outlet of the compressor.
In this way, the installation regulating the flow of fuel maintains an upper limitation and a lower limitation of the speed of the compressor so as to avoid an excessive speed or a too low speed.
During engine acceleration, the fuel flow must be as large as possible for a given pressure at the compressor outlet, in order to obtain a rapid response to the movement of the control lever 86 (fig. 1) actuated by the pilot. On the other hand, it is necessary to prevent the turbine of the compressor from being subjected to excessive temperatures during acceleration, and a maximum limit value must therefore be set for the fuel flow rate for given conditions. This is achieved by providing a fuel flow rate proportional to a function of both the inlet temperature to the compressor and the pressure at the outlet thereof.
We have in fact seen that the cam 196 has corrected the position of the horizontal rod 194 as a function of the speed of the compressor and of the temperature at the inlet of the latter. The rod 194, in turn, brings the lever 142 to a position which imposes a limit on the horizontal rod 122 which prevents the latter from continuing to move in a direction which corresponds to an increase in fuel flow at a given pressure. at the outlet of the compressor.
On the other hand, if the control lever 86 tends to impose an increase in speed through its cam 160, the right end of the bar 158 tends to move upwards, thus allowing the part 148 to rotate. clockwise around its pivot 150, which allows the horizontal rod 122 to move in a direction corresponding to an increase in fuel flow for a given pressure at the outlet of the compressor. However, this increase in the unit flow rate of the fuel is limited by the particular position of the rod 194 and of the lever 142 which ensure this limitation and this as a function of the particular values of the speed of the compressor and of its inlet temperature to the compressor. instant considered.
When the mechanically independent turbine is running at a speed exceeding a given value while the amount of fuel supplied to the engine is low, the compressor speed sensitive regulator 198 causes the cam 196 to move downward when this speed is reduced. This causes the surface 252 to come into contact with the stopper 256 to move the rod 258 downward.
Since the link comprising the rod 320 connecting the rod 258 to the arm 284 integral with the part 148 moves downwards, the part 148 and the rod 144 move downwards, so that the spring 306 acting on the rod 122 and crank lever 146 push rod 122 further to the right to increase the amount of fuel delivered to the engine, preventing the engine from becoming unstable during this transient state.
The lower limit of the fuel flow for a given pressure at the outlet of the compressor is determined by the fixed stop 280 limiting the lowering of the left part of the part 148 and, consequently, the displacement to the left of the rod 122 .
