Ainsi qu'on l'a précédemment indiqué, la couche 24 en fibres de polytétrafluoréthylène peut être cons tituée par des résines au polytétrafluoréthylène, par exemple du Téflon (marque déposée), du nylon, des compositions de moulageà base de polyéthylène, et des résines au monochlorotrifluoroéthylène. La couche 24 comprend toutefois avantageusement une mince couche de fibres de Téflon fixéeà la cou che de liaison26 et se présentant soit sous forme d'une couche de flocons ou de feutre, soit sous celle d'une sorte d'étoffe tissée;
Se référantà la fig. 11, on va décrire une mise en #uvre permettant de former la garniture58. Dans cet exemple, on commence par donnerà la garni ture la forme d'une étoile plate60, possédant plu sieurs pointes62, qui comporte, bien entendu, les mêmes trois couches que la garniture en forme de bande 20;
Method for manufacturing a low coefficient of friction lining and lining obtained by this method The present invention comprises a process for manufacturing a low coefficient of friction lining and the filling obtained by this process.
A considerable amount of work has been put into the adaptation of polytetrafluoroethylene, such as that known under the trademark Teflon , in for its use in gaskets which do not require separate lubrication. Teflon was initially used in the form of sheets or solid profiles, but experience has shown that under these conditions it is not suitable for </ B > the production of linings due to its low resistance to flow to cold.
Further development work resulted in the production of Teflon in the form of filaments and fabrics, which made it possible to increase its tensile strength by approximately twenty-five times.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that a layer of a material with low coefficient of friction is bonded to the surface of a support layer by means of a heat-curable tie layer to obtain a blank, in that said blank is shaped around a body, in that the blank is heated and pressed in order to soften the tie layer so that the layer with low coefficient of friction conforms exactly to the surface of said body, and in that the tie layer is hardened so that the layer with low coefficient of friction retains its final shape.
The lining according to the invention obtained by this process is characterized in that it comprises a support layer bearing on one of its faces a layer of a material with low coefficient of friction bound < B> to said support layer by a heat cured tie layer. The appended drawing represents, by title & example, some embodiments of the lining object of the invention obtained by the implementation of the process also object of the invention.

Fig. 5 shows, in radial cross section, a cylindrical mandrel on the side surface of which has been applied the gasket shown to in fig. 1.

Fig. 9 shows a plan seen from above, a motor vehicle control arm comprising a ball joint provided & a lining similar to that of fig. 7. Fig. 10 is a vertical section, to larger scale and with some parts broken away, by the line 10-10 of fig. 9.
Fig. 11 shows, in plan, another embodiment of the trim.
Fig. 12 shows, in vertical section and with parts broken away, an apparatus for forming a lining around the patella of a to ball joint.
In fig. 1 and 2, the lining is in the form of a strip 20 comprising a support layer 22 of elongated shape and a layer 24 of material with low coefficient of friction fixed on one face of the support layer by a bonding layer 26. The support layer 22 is made of a material capable of constituting a relatively rigid support for the layer 24, for example metal ,
while still allowing the strip 20 to be shaped around a mandrel as shown to in FIG. 5 by proceeding in a manner which will be described in more detail below.
Layer 24 of low coefficient of friction material is made from polytetrafluorethylene fibers bonded to one side of the layer. support 22 by the tie layer 26 constituted by a plastic material capable of sticking the layer 24 to the support layer 22 and capable of being softened subsequently by heating it and pressing it to adapt said layer 24 to the profile of the surface of a mandrel (fig. 5 and 6), as on the </ B > will also describe in more detail below.
As visible in in fig. 3, the four edges of the upper face of the support layer 22, before the application of the layers 24 and 26, are rounded. The tie layer 26 is applied to the upper face of the support layer 22 and extends over the rounded edges of the latter as shown (fig. 4). The layer 24 is then applied over the tie layer 26 so that it also covers the rounded edges 28 (fig. 2).
After the application of the layer 24 on the tie layer 26, the strip can be rolled around a forming mandrel 30 (fig. 5) so that, the ends 32 of the strip being brought end to end, the strip thus rolled up constitutes a lining in the form of a sleeve. It is possible, if desired, to form a long strip which is cut into shorter blanks of determined length suitable to adapt to the mandrel.
Once the strip is formed around the mandrel 30 , the metallic support layer 22 retains the shape of a sleeve which can be released from the mandrel 30 and place on a mandrel 34 of significantly larger diameter (fig. 6) to put it at dimension ; the ends 32 < / B> are then slightly spaced. Heat and pressure is then applied to the sleeve to soften the tie layer 26 until it gives way to fill the space between the ends 32 </ B > and to conform with precision the layer 24 to the exact diameter of the mandrel 34 for setting to the dimension.
The 32 ends are then preferably secured to each other by appropriate means, and the tie layer is cured 26 so that the strip retains its final sleeve shape with an inside diameter adjusted to a very precise dimension. The sleeve is then released, by sliding it, from the end of the mandrel 34, and it is used as a packing for shafts having the same diameter as the mandrel 34 of setting at the odds.
By carrying out the described process, it is possible to form, from strips, a large number of sleeve-shaped linings which each have an inside diameter exactly adjusted to </ B> a very precise dimension ; this technique lends itself easily to the requirements of mass production.
To obtain the desired diameter, layer 24 is preferably given a relatively low thickness, advantageously of the order of a few hundredths of a millimeter or of a tenth of a millimeter. It It is sufficient that the tie layer 26 is thick enough to lend itself to the desired shape ; it must, of course, also be able to soften < B> at a lower temperature than layer 24 and support layer 22, so that the tie layer 26 is suitable for the formatting and not the other layers.
Thanks to the rounding of the edges 28 of the strip which has been described previously, it is possible to join the ends 32 of a more satisfactorily after setting at the final dimension of the filling; the rounded edges of the ends, of the band constituting the -filling allow to freely make c Z'l Cr isser the latter to place it on the tree to support and to remove it, without risking damaging the ends of the layer 24.
If desired, tie layer 26 and layer 24 can completely surround edges 28 of backing layer 22 as shown at 36 </ B > and 38 (fig. 7); the support layer 22 is thus entirely covered with a layer of low-coefficient material friction except on its underside or dorsal.
As previously indicated, the layer 24 of polytetrafluoroethylene fibers can be constituted by polytetrafluoroethylene resins, for example Teflon (registered trademark), nylon, polyethylene-based molding compositions, and monochlorotrifluoroethylene resins. The layer 24 however advantageously comprises a thin layer of Teflon fibers fixed to the binding layer 26 and either in the form of a layer of flakes or felt or of some kind of woven fabric ;
in fact, e Teflon has, when it is in the form of fibers, cold flow characteristics much more favorable than when it is in the form of a full continuous sheet. As previously indicated, the tie layer 26 can be made of any thermosetting or thermoplastic material which can soften at a lower temperature at the softening temperature of the layer 24 so that when applying to heat and pressure during the setting to </ B > the final dimension of the sleeve as described with reference to in fig. 6,
the tie layer 26 will allow a precise adaptation of the layer 24 to the dimension of the mandrel; subsequent curing of the tie layer will to layer 24 its final precise cylindrical shape. Thermosetting resinous materials will preferably be used to constitute the bonding layer 26, , since there are many thermosetting materials endowed with excellent mechanical strength properties making it possible to support at the finished sleeve of higher loads.
In addition, when a thermosetting resinous material is used to constitute the tie layer 26, it can be treated or partially polymerized after bonding the layer 24 to the layer. -support 22 (FIG. 2) to constitute a blank in the form of a strip which it is possible to keep indefinitely in its partially treated hardened form.
When it is desired to constitute the final sleeve from from such a partially processed blank, one proceeds in the manner previously described with reference to FIGS. 5 and 6, the thermosetting tie layer 26 softens under the effect of heat and pressure allowing to the material layer 24 to conform with precision to the surface of the mandrel 34 ; then, a final hardening treatment of this layer 26 < / B> allows it to rigidly retain the layer 24 in its exact final shape.
In fig. 8, the strip-shaped blank 20 comprises a circular tongue 40 formed at one end of the strip 20 while a corresponding groove or notch 42 of complementary shape is formed at the other end of the strip. When the sleeve is finally set to the dimension around the mandrel 34, the tongue 40 can be engaged in the notch 42 to secure the ends to one another 32 </ B > by forming a smooth exterior surface without protrusion. In each of the embodiments described, the sleeve is used as a gasket for the member which must support the shaft ; the sleeve must therefore fit into an opening made to receive it in the organ through which the tree extends.
It is therefore not absolutely necessary that the ends 32 be secured to each other ; it suffices that they are placed end to < / B> end inside inside the opening of the organ in question ; since they were given this final shape on the setting mandrel at dimension 34, the sleeve will thus be able to maintain its precise inside diameter.
In fig. 9 and 10, a control arm 44 has at its inner ends branches 46 which must pivot on the frame of a motor vehicle to support a front wheel of said vehicle . A to ball joint 48 is fixed to the lower face of the pivoting outer end of this arm, this joint comprising a ball joint rod 49 which must be connected to the front wheel.
A 50 hemispherical cap is formed on the pivoting end of the control arm to constitute the upper half of the spherical housing or shell intended to receive a ball joint 56 ; a stamped part of generally spherical truncated shape 52, having flanges 54 extending radially, constitutes the lower half of said shell, the flanges 54 being welded or fixed to any other manner to the underside of the control arm 44.
The 56 patella of the joint is supported inside the inside of the shell by a 58 pad which includes the same three layers as the pad in the form of a strip 20, that is to say the low friction coefficient layer 24, the tie layer 26 and the support layer 22.
The 58 .lining is formed around the 56 patella in a way that is quite similar to the way you operated to conform the band 20 around the shaping mandrel 30 (fig. 5). The ball joint, thus covered with its lining, is then put in place to </ B > the inside of its shell between the 50 cap and the stamped part 52 in the form of a truncated spherical cap. the lining 58 is given a dimension slightly greater than that which corresponds to the interior radius of the sphere that constitutes the shell, so that the flanges 54 of the part 52 do not come completely to made in contact with the lower face of the control arm.
Heat is then applied to the ball joint to to soften the tie layer 26, then we attract to </ B> forces the flanges 54 until they come to rest under the underside of the control arm to exert radial pressure on the lining 58 so that the binding layer 26 applies and precisely conforms layer 24 to the surface of the patella 56. After the tie layer has hardened 26, </ B> layer 24 is held in place and in intimate and precise contact with the surface of the patella to allow sliding movements of the patella in its shell.
Normally, the fairly considerable friction between the backing layer 22 and the inner surface of the shell will prevent the liner from sliding relative to the shell but, if desired, the liner can also be effectively secured. lining to the shell, to prevent any relative sliding between these two elements, by any appropriate means, such as by welding, or by mechanically hooking the lining to the shell.
Referring to in fig. 11, we will describe an implementation making it possible to form the filling 58. In this example, we start by giving to the filling the shape of a flat star 60, having several points 62, which has, of course, the same three layers as the band-shaped trim 20 ;
in the present case, it will be assumed that the support layer 22 is arranged so to constitute the upper face, as shown (fig. 11). The dimensions of the 62 tips are calculated so that when the patella is capped with the star 60 and when the tips are applied on and against the spherical surface of the patella , The star makes it possible to constitute a sort of outline of what the trim should ultimately be ; the sides facing adjacent points of the star must come into contact as perfectly as possible one against each other and edge to edge.
This done, we introduce the patella thus covered with its packing blank between the cap 50 and the lower part 52 of the shell, and we apply heat and suitable pressure, as previously described, to accurately conform layer 24 to the surface of the patella 56. If the As desired, the tie layer 26 can be made of a thermosetting material which is partially processed when the filling blank is star shaped plane as shown (fig. 11), and finish the treatment, after shaping on the patella, under the effect of the application of heat and pressure.
Furthermore, if the layer 24 comprises a woven material, it is advantageous that the weave be elastic or expandable to facilitate its shaping around the sphere of the patella 56.
Referring to in fig. 12, we will now describe a device with split die which makes it possible to implement another process for forming the lining 58 enveloping a ball joint. This device comprises a split die 64 made up of two halves 66 and 68 fitting together around the patella of a ball joint. leaving sufficient clearance to provide a cavity 70 between the surface of the patella and the inner spherical surface of the die elements 66 and 68. With this arrangement, the layer 24 and the connecting layer 26 are placed around the patella 56 ,
then a support material is injected under pressure through an opening provided in the upper portion of the matrix to completely fill the remaining free space to the interior of the cavity 70, the lower portion 68 of the matrix constituting a tight seal around the rod 49 of the patella to prevent the injected support material from s' escape. After hardening of this support material, it constitutes the support layer 22 for the lining.
The matrix elements 66 and 68 can then be separated from each other ; the ball joint is released 56 </ B> covered with its lining and inserted between the cap 50 and the lower part 52 of the articulation to patella 48 (fig. < B> 10). Then to application of heat and pressure as previously described to finally conform layer 24 to the surface of the patella 56.
Layer 24 is finally conformed to the surface of the patella 56 under the effect of the heat and pressure of the support material injected which will maintain, after hardening, the layer 24 applied with precision against the surface of the patella. It is then sufficient to simply clamp the gasket between the cap 50 and the stamped part 52, without any further application of heat, to shape the layer 24 on the patella. .
