Process for the production of nuclear fuel and apparatus for carrying out the process The present invention relates to a process for the production of nuclear fuel for nuclear reactors.
In the process of nuclear fission of, for example, U233, U235, Pu239 and Pu241 atoms, the fission or disintegration of the nuclei takes place after a neutron has been captured. This produces two or more fission products of lower atomic weight and a number of neutrons.
The large kinetic energy of the fission products is quickly consumed and given off to the environment in the form of heat. The generation of neutrons during the fission event creates the basis for an independent fission chain reaction, in which at least one such neutron causes the subsequent fission. The different types of reactors all comprise an arrangement in the form of fissile material, which is fed to the reactor as core fuel, the heat being dissipated through heat exchange and the energy values released during the core reaction being controlled. The material that is gradually used up must be replaced after a certain period of time.
The exchange of nuclear fuel can, however, be reduced and in some cases completely omitted if the nuclear fuel is supplied with so-called fertile material, i.e. material that can be converted into fissile material, for example Th232 and U238. Through neutron capture and double beta particle decay, Th232 is transformed into U 233, which can be split by thermal neutrons. In the same way, U238 can be transformed into Pu239, which can also be split by thermal neutrons.
The presence of such fertile material in the nuclear fuel thus allows the conversion of non-fissile atoms into fissile atoms, whereby the degree of regeneration of the nuclear fuel can be changed simultaneously with the consumption of the original fissile charge.
It is therefore desirable for fuel assemblies for nuclear reactors which have fertile and fissile material. In rapid breeders, in which the neutrons that cause fission are not slowed down significantly from their initial speed, a ratio of fissile to fertile atoms of 1 to 5 is desirable. In ther mix reactors, where the fission by trapping thermal or very slow neutrons he follows, a ratio of 1 to 100 is desirable. Furthermore, it is desirable to operate the reactors with a high specific power, the proportion of fissile material in the reactor core being kept as low as possible.
On the other hand, this brings with it great difficulties in removing the heat released during the reaction due to the low thermal conductivity of most fertile materials, for example ThOZ or U02. If the specific power is high, there is a risk that the melting point of the nuclear fuel will be exceeded. Th02 melts above 5100'F and UOZ at 4500 F. The problems in the design of fuel elements, in particular with regard to heat dissipation, are therefore considerable.
The previous efforts to overcome the difficulties mentioned have so far not been successful. It has been proposed to manufacture individual fuel elements from fertile and fissile material. However, this does not achieve the greatest efficiency with regard to the effective heat transfer surfaces. At the beginning of operation, the nuclear fuel elements made of fertile material only contribute a significantly smaller part of the total output than at a later point in time when fissile material was produced in the elements after the conversion process described above.
It has already been proposed to produce very thin fuel elements in order to reduce the maximum internal temperature for a given power level and heat transfer values in this way. However, these elements are very expensive, which is partly due to the very difficult production and partly to the not agile envelope in relation to the increase in heat transfer surfaces.
Fer ner has been proposed to introduce threads of highly conductive material in the nuclear fuel material, but this requires a very difficult fabrication, and also because of a security volume of non-fissile or non-fertile material, the amount of fissile and fertile material per Unit volume is reduced.
Another proposal to overcome the difficulties mentioned is to use annularly coated fuel elements. Here, the initial charge of fissile material is arranged in a layer which is adjacent to the heat transfer surface or to the surfaces of an inner core made of fertile material. In such an embodiment, a rod made of U238 or Th232 (fertile material) is provided on its outer surface with a certain layer of U233, U235 or Pu23g (fissile material). The thickness of the fissile layer depends on the amount of fertile material in the rod and on the desired ratio of fissile and fertile material.
If desired, the fertile material can be tubular with a central opening for coolant flow. Furthermore, an envelope can be provided which protects the heat transfer surfaces from the influence of the coolant.
The present invention now aims to create a method that allows mass produc tion of such flat compacts.
The method according to the invention for producing nuclear fuel in the form of flat pressed pieces, which consist of parts of at least two granular materials that differ from one another, is characterized in that the materials are filled into a mold, the different materials being filled during the filling are kept separate from each other; and that the separation is canceled before pressing, so that there is contact between the materials during the pressing.
The invention also relates to a device for carrying out the method, which is characterized by the fact that it has an opening into which the material is filled and pressed together, that separating means are provided for separating the different materials while they are being filled into the opening that means are provided for the removal of the separating means prior to pressing and that the device has means for compressing the material filled into the opening.
The method according to the invention and the device for performing the method are explained in more detail below with reference to the drawing, for example. 1 shows a side view of a reactor, FIG. 2 shows a section along the line II-II through the reactor according to FIG. 1, FIG. 3 shows a nuclear fuel rod, FIGS. 4, 5 and 6 cross sections through nuclear fuel rods and FIG .7,
8 and 9 devices for the production of pellets for nuclear fuel rods with cross sections according to FIGS. 4, 5 and 6.
The nuclear reactor according to FIG. 1 has a reactor core 10, which consists of several parallel fissile material arrangements 12. The fissile material arrangements 12 have moderator coolant flow channels and each have an arrangement of rod-shaped fuel elements, which are shown in FIG. 3. The fissile material arrangements 12 are supported at the bottom on a base plate 14 and are held at their upper ends by a grid 16.
The reactor core formed by the fissile material arrangements 12 is surrounded by a heat shield 22 and both are attached to brackets 18 and 20 in the reactor vessel 24. Inlet 26 and outlet 28 are provided for the coolant which flows through the core 10. In addition, control elements 30 with drive devices 32 are provided, by means of which the course of the nuclear reaction and, accordingly, the neutron flux and the reactor power can be controlled.
According to FIG. 2, each fissile material arrangement 12 has a flow channel 34 in which a plurality of parallel, mutually separated fissile material elements or rods 36 are arranged. The cross-shaped control elements 30 act reciprocally between the adjacent fissile material arrangements.
According to FIG. 3, the rod 36 has a number of shaped bodies 38 made of fissile material, aligned in the longitudinal direction of the rod, which are surrounded by a casing tube 40 made of corrosion-resistant material, for example zirconium, stainless steel or the like. The rod 36 has at its ends connecting means 42 and 44, which allow the fastenings of the rods in the manner described above.
According to FIG. 4, which shows a cross section through the fission fuel rod 36, such a shaped body 38 surrounded by the casing tube 40 has a core part 46 which consists of fertile material, that is to say material which can be converted into fissile material. This material can be ThO., Or a mixture of ThO2 and UO2. The core part 46 is annularly surrounded by a filler layer 48, which consists of cleavable material.
This material can U0 ,; U308; Th02 and U02 or Th02 and U308. Furthermore, the molded body 38 has a central opening 50. The method and the device for producing such shaped bodies 38 are explained in more detail below with reference to FIG.
According to FIG. 5, which shows a further embodiment of such a shaped body, the shaped body 39 consists of a closed cylinder, the core part 47 of which is made of fertile material and is surrounded by a layer 49 of fissile material. This shaped body 39 is enclosed by a casing tube 41. The method and the device for producing such shaped bodies 39 will be described in more detail below with reference to FIG. 8.
6 shows a further embodiment of a ring-shaped coated fuel rod in section, in which an inner and an outer heat transfer surface is provided. For this purpose, an inner sheathing tube 50 and an outer sheathing tube 52 are provided, between which a plurality of molded bodies 54 are also layered. The molded bodies 54 have a core part 56 made of fertile material and an inner filling layer 58 and an outer filling layer 60 made of fissile material. The method and the device for producing such shaped bodies 54 are described in more detail below with reference to FIG. 9.
The device according to FIG. 7 has a mold 70 with an opening 72 which serves to receive the granular or powdery material to be compacted for the shaped bodies. A pressure piston 74 is provided for compressing the material, a mandrel 76 being arranged in the mold 70, through which the perforated shape of the individual molded bodies according to FIG. 4 can be achieved.
Furthermore, a sleeve 78 is provided in the widening 72 of the mold 70, which allows the mold to be filled with granular or powdery material of different compositions for possibly multi-layer molded bodies. Furthermore, an ejector 80 is provided, wel cher after the pressing of the molded body allows their ejection from the mold.
For the production of the molded body, the fertile material was first brought into the annular space 82 between the mandrel 76 and the sleeve 78. This material can be powdery Th02, natural or enriched U02 or a mixture of Th02 and U02. Subsequently, a suitable fissile material desired for the ring filling is then brought into the annular space 84 between the wall of the mold 70 and the sleeve 78.
This material can be enriched U02 or U.O8, Th02 and enriched U02 or Th02 and enriched U308. Once the materials have been accommodated in the mold in this way, the sleeve 78 is pulled out of the mold 70 so that the concentrically arranged materials touch one another in the common edge zone. The pressure piston 74 is then inserted into the mold opening 72, whereby it presses the materials together. If desired, the molding compound can be heated at the same time.
After the pressure piston 74 has moved out of the mold opening 72, the compact produced according to the method described above is ejected from the mold 70 by upward movement of the ejector 80.
To achieve high production rates, it is possible to automatically move the sleeve 78 out of the mold into a corresponding recess in the pressure piston 74 (not shown). In the production of the moldings, powder-binding agents and lubricants can also be used.
For the production of the molded body according to FIG. 5, FIG. 8 shows another embodiment of the device, which essentially corresponds to the device according to FIG. 7, although the mandrel 76 and the corresponding recess in the pressure piston 74 are missing. The mold 70 according to FIG. 8 has a cavity 72, ejector 81, sleeve 78 and pressure piston 75. The production of the molded body takes place in the same way as has already been described using the device according to FIG.
For the production of the molded body according to FIG. 6, a further embodiment of the device is shown in FIG. 9, which essentially corresponds to the device according to FIG. 7, except that two sleeves 78a and 78b are provided here.
The moldings are produced in the same way as has already been described with reference to the device according to FIG. 7, only that the powdery fertile materials are introduced into the annular central space 90 and the powdery cleavable materials into the inner ring 94 and the outer ring 92 . Both sleeves 78a and 78b are then also pulled out, whereby corresponding recesses can be provided in the pressure piston 74 for the purpose, as was already described above for the device according to FIG.
The method described and the device for performing the method is not only for the production of molded articles from U (uranium) - and Th (thorium) oxides but also for the production of ring-coated molded articles made of carbides, silicides, nitrides and oxides suitable for thorium, uranium and plutonium.
The pressed molded bodies made of U, Pu and Th oxides can be sintered at the temperatures customary for this purpose, while in the case of U, Pu and Th carbides, nitrides and silicides, the use of known hot pressing processes, in which the Mold and the powdery material during pressing, it is preferable to be heated. Of course, in addition to an annular cross-section, the shaped bodies can also have cross-sections of other geometric shapes.
