Protection device for electrical machines, in particular single-phase small motors. It is known to protect windings of electrical machines from excessive heating by building a bimetal switch into the winding that switches off the current at a certain temperature. It happens, however, that with a very steep rise in temperature, the temperature lag of the bimetal switch becomes too great and it does not respond in time. This protection is therefore imperfect.
Another known embodiment consists in using a semiconductor with a large negative temperature coefficient of the electrical resistance, a so-called hot conductor, instead of a bimetal switch. This achieves complete protection against excessive heat build-up in the windings, since the geometrical dimensions of these hot conductors can be selected so small that the machine windings can be protected for all current densities that occur in practice, i.e. temperature increases, but these hot conductors require an additional one Switching arrangement.
The invention aims to create a protective device, especially for small, single-phase motors, since there is not enough space for a bimetal switch in the winding and on the other hand the use of a hot conductor is uneconomical because of the necessary additional switching arrangement.
The invention solves the problem with a protective device in which a semiconductor with a large positive temperature coefficient of the electrical resistance, a so-called PTC thermistor, is switched on in the supply line of the motor, possibly only in series with the auxiliary phase, and is embedded in the winding to be protected .
For this purpose, a semiconductor made of doped barium titanate, barium strontium titanate or barium lead titanate, which has a practically constant resistance below the Curie temperature, is expediently used, which is then within approximately 100'C increases by about 4 powers of ten.
The resistance of the PTC thermistor can increase as soon as the winding temperature exceeds the Curie temperature of the same, or it is heated above this temperature by the current heat, or both influences can occur both under the effect of the winding heating and the effect of the motor current flowing through it cause the Curie temperature to be exceeded. The increase in resistance limits the motor current, and a state of equilibrium is established in which the winding temperature remains below the permissible limit.
If the PTC thermistor is connected in series with the auxiliary phase, it is warmed up with suitable dosage and assumes a very high resistance, so that the auxiliary phase motor current is limited and the losses in the I-eleven phase are greatly reduced.
The protection device according to the invention enables the winding to be protected against all conceivable loads with low, cheap and space-saving means, such as permanent overload, dynamic operation and a locked rotor, so that the invention is technically reliable and, above all, economical Protection especially for small engines represents.
