Use of a heat-curable resin The present invention relates to the use of a heat-curable resin, free of ammonia for the manufacture of the cylindrical casing of a muffler, for example. example for motor vehicles.
It is well known to equip such vehicles with an exhaust consisting of an elongated cylinder traversed by the exhaust pipe and divided into several chambers by radial walls. The exhaust pipe has for example radial openings as well as incisions along these chambers. The whole thus forms a series of low-pass filters intended to dampen the acoustic waves of the exhaust gases and to reduce the noise produced by the engine.
It turned out, however, that the combustion acids as well as the incompletely consumed secondary products condense on the enveloping wall of the exhaust pipe, this in particular when the engine is put to rest.
This condensation is due to the inevitable temperature difference between the actual exhaust pipe and the surrounding wall. These products have a destructive action on the metal wall of the exhaust, the service life of which is thus rapidly reduced.
The object of the invention is to create an exhaust pipe providing acoustic damping at least as great as the pipes in use and not having the aforementioned drawback.
A resin of the type mentioned above is used for this purpose to form a mixture comprising this resin, fibers and a filling material, at least one half of the exhaust pot is molded and the molded object is subjected to a treatment. subsequent thermal.
The invention will be described below by way of example. The accompanying drawing shows a muffler provided with an envelope of material prepared according to an embodiment of the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section and FIG. 2 is a cross section of an exhaust pipe.
The exhaust pipe 1 carries radial walls 2 of circular section on which the cylindrical enveloping wall 3 is fixed. The latter is formed by two halves fitting into each other and fixed by flanges 4. This wall 4 has inside grooves 5 with a flat bottom corresponding to the walls 2. The exhaust pipe 1 has openings 6 and incisions 7.
The wall 3 may for example consist of a mixture of resole resin condensed in an alkaline fluid and free of ammonia having 2.5% stearic acid (46% by weight),
glass wool, for example cut into fibers of about 10 mm (35 0/0), asbestos flour (19 0/0) and nigro-sinic base (10/0).
This mass is pressed for 5 minutes in a mold at a temperature of 160-1800 C and then subjected to a thermal treatment during which the molded product is placed in a ventilated oven in which the temperature rises during the first two hours of 800 at 1200 C and for the next two at 200 C.
The mixture can vary within the following limits:

<SEP> .......... </B> <SEP>. <B> ................ </B> <SEP> 0.1 - <SEP> 2% The stearic acid content of the resin can vary from 1 to 3.5%. It would naturally be possible to provide fibers of a material other than glass. Finely divided slate can also be used as filler, for example.
We could add more pigments and a lubricant to the mixture.
An exhaust was made from a mixture comprising 35% glass wool (10 mm), 19% asbestos flour,
46% resole resin condensed in an alkaline ammonia-free fluid, containing 2.5% stearic acid, 1% nigrosinic base.
Such a pot was fitted to a Mercedes 220 SE type car and subjected to the usual stress for almost 10,000 km. Care was taken to reach speeds of 175-195 km / h for as long periods as possible on the highway (approximately 25 to 55 minutes). The result of these tests confirmed the aptitudes of said material for this use.
In addition, laboratory tests produced the following results
