Nickel alloy The present invention relates to a nickel alloy. Such an alloy may contain metal additives which render the alloy resistant to corrosion and give it great mechanical resistance at high temperatures.
The alloys contemplated are very resistant to oxidation and other forms of corrosion at temperatures on the order of 1093 C or higher. It follows that these alloys can be used in the manufacture of blades, fins and other parts of gas turbines operating at high temperature.
These alloys are capable of being easily cast, so they are useful in the manufacture of exhaust fins and piping for internal combustion engines, heat exchangers,
and coatings for retorts and vessels used in the chemical and metallurgical industries. Other important uses of these alloys are found in the manufacture of coatings in the parts disposed after the burners of the turbine engine units of airplanes, flame guards and covers on the leading edges of the wings of airplanes and. supersonic missiles.
Previously known high temperature resistant alloys, such as nickel and / or cobalt alloys, which have been used to make blades, fins or other parts of gas turbines operating at high temperature exhibit a temperature maximum operating temperature of around 899o C.
For example, a common nickel-cobalt-based alloy further comprising molybdenum is not practically usable for making a resistance piece in gas turbines if the temperature of the metal is above 899o C. of these alloys disappears above this temperature.
Gas turbines can operate at temperatures considerably higher than those which could hitherto be achieved if the blades and fins are made with the alloy envisaged, particularly because of its higher resistance to elongation at. high temperatures compared to conventional alloys.
The operation of a gas turbine is all the better as the operating temperature increases, due to the fact that at very high temperatures the total thrust of the group is increased and the quantity of fuel consumed per kilogram of thrust is increased. diminished.
The nickel alloy which is the subject of the present invention is characterized in that it comprises, by weight, from 6 to 17% of chromium, from 5 to 20% of tungsten, from 0.25 to 3% of niobium ,
from 2 to 8% aluminum, 0.02 to 0.30% carbon, boron or zirconium, or both, at 0.001 to 0.2% boron and 0.001 to 0 ,
5% zirconium, from 2 to 15% cobalt, the percentage of chromium not exceeding 15 0/0 when the percentages of niobium and cobalt exceed 1 and 5 0/0, respectively,
and the percentages of tungsten and aluminum being less than 11 and 5 respectively, the nickel forming at least the major part of the remainder of the alloy.
It has been found that the characteristics of metallurgical stability and high temperature resistance of alloys of this type depend on the presence in the alloy of boron and / or zirconium in the respective amounts indicated above.
In many cases, it is preferred to keep the weight ratio of zirconium and boron in the alloy at about 4: 1, although other ratios may also be suitable. It has been found that if the boron content exceeds 0.2%, the alloy is no longer satisfactory, especially in applications where the thermal shock requirements are severe.
The presence of titanium is optional, but advantageous. Preferably, the weight ratio of aluminum to that of titanium is between about 2: 1 and 6: 1.
Molybdenum can be tolerated in the alloy without adversely affecting its properties, provided that the amount of molybdenum does not exceed 3% by weight.
Although silicon, manganese and iron are not essential components of the alloy, it has been found that the addition of small percentages of one or more of these bodies, up to 1% of silicon. , up to 2% manganese and up to 5% iron, can, in some cases, improve certain properties of the alloy.
Interstitial elements such as nitrogen, hydrogen, tin, lead, etc., should be kept as low as possible in the alloy. In addition, the presence of more than 0.5% in total of deoxidizers, such as calcium or magnesium, should be avoided.
The following proportions are advantageous for the alloy, the values being given by weight: from 8.75 to 9.25% of chromium, from 12 to 13% of tungsten, from 0.8 to 1.2% of niobium,
from 5 to 5.5% of aluminum, from 0.12 to 0.17% of carbon, from 1.75 to 2.25% of titanium, from 0.03 to 0,
07% boron, 9-11% cobalt, 0.03-0.12% zirconium, up to 1.5% iron, up to 0,
10% manganese, and up to 0.10% silicon.
A preferred composition, in these ranges of proportions, is as follows: approximately 9% chromium, approximately 12.5% tungsten, approximately 1% niobium,
about 5.25% aluminum, about 2% titanium, about 0.03% boron, about 10% cobalt, about 0.12 0 / a zirconium,
a very low concentration of iron with a maximum of approximately 1.5%, a very low concentration of silicon with a maximum of approximately 0.10%,
a very low concentration of manganese with a maximum of approximately 0.10%, approximately 0.15% carbon, the balance being practically made up of nickel.
The expression substantially consisting of nickel means nickel alone or nickel plus impurities and / or deoxidizers which do not appreciably affect the properties of the alloy.
A second example of a preferred composition is the following: from 15.5 to 16.5% of chromium, from 9.5 to 10.5% of tungsten, from 0.8 to 1.2% of niobium,
from 3.4 to 3.8% of aluminum, from 0.12 to 0.17% of carbon, from 3.25 to 3.75% of titanium, from 0.03 to 0,
07% boron, 9-11% cobalt, 0.03-0.07% zirconium, up to 1.5% iron, up to 0,
10% silicon, and up to 0.10% manganese.
A preferred composition, in the ranges of proportions above, is as follows:
about 16% chromium, about 10% tungsten, about 1% niobium, about 3.6% aluminum, about 3,
5% titanium, about 0.05% boron, about 10% cobalt, about 0.05% zirconium, a low concentration of silicon not exceeding 0.10 0/0,
a low: manganese concentration not exceeding 0.10%, approximately 0.15% carbon, the balance being practically made up of nickel.
It has been found that superior results are obtained when the alloy formula corresponds to the above proportions and, in addition, meets the following equation 1 Cr + 1.1 W + 3.4 Nb + 4.3 Ti + 6 Ad = 60-70 the coefficients representing the percentages by weight of the various constituents in the alloy.
For example, the composition equivalence or equivalent value for the first preferred composition given above is 66.25. The equivalent value for the second preferred composition given above is 67.05.
A few examples of preparation and testing of various alloy formulas forming the subject of the invention are given below.
