<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Device for generating an obstacle for aircraft The invention relates to a device for generating an obstacle for aircraft, which is characterized in that it contains an inflatable, gas-tight envelope and a device for releasing gas into this envelope.
Such a device can be designed as a projectile and used in such a way that the inflatable shell is inflated in the air after the projectile has been fired, so that a balloon-like structure is created. Such a balloon can float slowly in the air and be sucked in by the engines, especially by jet planes. which can damage these motors.
Such a projectile can be manufactured in various sizes to fit rifles and cannons of all calibers.
However, the device can also be designed so that the device for releasing gas emits a gas which is lighter than air, so that the device can simply be allowed to rise in the air when the envelope is inflated.
It is clear that in both cases the device can be used just as well from land, from ships or from aircraft.
In the drawing, an embodiment of the device according to the invention is shown in a longitudinal section.
The device shown is designed as a projectile and has a body part 1 made of steel, to which a wire mesh 2 reinforced by magnesium rods is attached. About this wire mesh is an inflatable shell 3 made of elastic material, such as. B. rubber, stretched, which is attached at 4 on the circumference of the body part 1 of the projectile. In the interior 5 of the body part 1 materials are housed which are capable of a gas-generating chemical reaction. Furthermore, an ignition device, generally designated 6, in the manner of a time fuse is arranged in the interior of the body part 1.
The ignition device 6 is set up to trigger the reaction between the materials in the interior space 5 a predetermined time after the projectile has been fired. This predetermined time is chosen so that the reaction is triggered when the projectile is at a high point in its trajectory. The reaction then creates a gas which expands the elastic envelope 3 and inflates it into a balloon which can propel relatively slowly through the air. The wire mesh 2 prevents the reaction from passing from the interior of the bullet into the interior of the balloon and thus prevents damage or burning of the envelope 3.
When the floating balloon comes close to the flight path of a jet aircraft, it is sucked in by the engine of the same. The balloon enters through the suction opening of the aircraft and the metallic projectile parts attached to it damage the aircraft's engine. It is therefore clear that when the projectile is fired, the aim is preferably in front of the aircraft to be decommissioned.
As already noted, the ignition device 6 contains means which can trigger a reaction between materials in the interior 5 a certain time after the projectile has been fired. In a very simple embodiment, the ignition device 6 can consist of a fuse, the outer end of which is ignited when the projectile is fired and the inner end of which ignites the materials in the interior after a certain time has elapsed.
Instead of such an ignition device of the type of a time fuse, one which responds to the air speed at the projectile could of course also be used
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Ignition device can be used, which triggers the mentioned reaction as soon as this air speed falls below a certain value, whereby the reaction would also be triggered at a high point in the trajectory of the projectile.
The gas required to inflate the envelope does not have to be generated in the device itself by a chemical reaction, as in the embodiment described. In another embodiment, e.g. B. a material which is gaseous at atmospheric pressure can be carried along in the device under pressure. In such an embodiment, a container for receiving such a material would be arranged in the interior of the device, and a device corresponding to the ignition device 6 could be provided for opening this container.
In another embodiment of the device according to the invention, not shown, a device for delivering a gas is provided more easily than air. Here, too, a balloon is created by inflating an envelope, but it is able to rise in the air itself, so that such a device does not need to be shot down.
In order to increase the damaging effect of the balloons described on the engine or on other parts of an aircraft, a device of the type described may use additional means, such as. B. contain an explosive charge with an impact fuse. It will also be understood that the envelope could be housed in the device when folded. Such a folded envelope could consist of elastic or inelastic material and would be unfolded by the inflation.
