EMI2.1

Process for the preparation of azulenes
Azulenes can e.g. B. be prepared by optionally substituted cyclopentadienes which have at least two adjacent unsubstituted carbon atoms, or indene with derivatives of glutacondialdehyde, which can be alkylated in a- and / or in ss-position and in which the enolized aldehyde group is optionally by Alkyl or aryl groups substituted amino group is exchanged, condensed in a known manner to the corresponding fulvene and these are then preferably converted in the presence of inert organic solvents into the corresponding azulenes.
According to Swiss patent number 378300, a metal compound of a cyclopentadiene which is unsubstituted in at least one o-position to the CH2 group and optionally substituted in the other positions is reacted with a quaternary pyridinium salt and the intermediate product initially formed is converted into the corresponding product either immediately or after its separation by heating Azulene convicted.
It has now been found that the metal compounds of the cyclopentadienes unsubstituted in at least one o-position to the group and optionally substituted in the other positions react very easily with pyrylium salts to give pentadiene-2,4-ylidenefulven derivatives and the fulvenes obtained in this way are surprisingly easier Cycle to form the corresponding azulenes. The azulenes are formed from the fulvene derivatives by heating them to at most 100 ° C. and preferably at about 60 to 700 ° C. The yields are about 40 to 600% of theory.
The present process has the major advantage over the process outlined at the outset that the azulene ring closure can be carried out at temperatures below 100 ° C., while the processes mentioned have to work at significantly higher temperatures and in the presence of high-boiling organic solvents.
A particularly simple embodiment of the new process consists in adding a suspension of a pyrylium salt, e.g. B. 2,4,6-trimethyl pyrylium perchlorate in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran, a dissolution of a metal salt of a cyclopentadiene, z. B. of sodium cyclopentadiene in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran. The two compounds set immediately in an exothermic reaction with the formation of z. B. sodium perchlorate and 5-oxyr 1,3,5-trimethyl-pentadien-2,4-ylidene-cyclopentadiene I. The fulvene I then reacts with intramolecular elimination of water and ring closure to form 4,6,8-trimethyl-azulene II.
EMI1.1
EMI2.1
The reaction proceeds faster and with higher yields when working in boiling tetrahydrofuran. Both the unsubstituted pyrylium perchlorate itself and its substituted homologues can be used as the pyrylium salt component. The pyrylium salts of perchloric acid and of borofluoridofluoric acid, which are also very easily accessible, have proven to be particularly advantageous.
The alkali or alkaline earth compounds are expediently used as metal compounds of the cyclopentadienes. In the context of the present invention, indene is to be understood as a substituted cyclopentadiene. It can be used as a starting component just as well as the cyclopentadienes. Furthermore, all substituted cyclopentadienes can be used in the form of their metal compounds, provided that two adjacent carbon atoms of the 5-membered ring are unsubstituted. Instead of the metal compounds of the cyclopentadienes, it is also possible to use the free cyclopentadienes when working in the presence of alkali alcohols.
Particularly suitable solvents for the reaction components are tetrahydrofuran and 2ithylene glycol dimethyl ether.
The present process allows azulenes, in particular those which are multiply substituted in the 7-membered ring, to be prepared in a simple manner in large quantities and in an economically advantageous manner in a short time.

The combined hexane extracts are washed with water and then dried over calcium chloride.
The hexane solution is then passed through an aluminum oxide column and the eluate is then evaporated.
