Process for the preparation of a thickening or solidifying agent for liquids and pastes
The invention relates to a method for producing a thickening or solidifying agent for liquids and pastes of all types, which consists of a mixture of finely divided metal and / or metalloid oxides. The oxides, mixtures of which are used as thickeners, are obtained by the action of oxidizing and / or hydrolyzing agents on volatile metal or metalloid compounds at elevated temperature in the gas phase.
Thickening or making liquids or pastes consistent is a task that occurs in numerous branches of technology. A large number of finely divided substances are used for this purpose, the main thing being to select substances that are compatible with the respective medium to be thickened and are also effective in the smallest possible amounts so as not to impede the character of the basic substance.
In recent times, highly disperse oxides have been successfully introduced as thickeners, as these oxides, as a result of their production from the gas phase by oxidation or hydrolysis of volatile metal or metalloid compounds, are not only extremely fine and surface-active, but also have a relatively even distribution of grain size, so that they can be applied with easily reproducible results. It has also been found that the stability of the thickening effect, e.g. B. in the production of aqueous oxide dispersions, can be increased by mixing two different oxides, for example if a finely divided silica is blended with a few percent aluminum oxide.
After all, it takes a thoroughgoing exaltation; In many cases, the viscosity of liquids still contains considerable additions of these finely divided oxides, which are valuable and therefore expensive substances.
It has now been found that highly effective thickeners can be produced from mixtures of oxides by producing finely divided oxides by decomposing corresponding volatile compounds in the presence of oxidizing and / or hydrolyzing agents at elevated temperature in the gas phase in the state of an aerosol and at least two different gas streams containing oxides obtained in this way are mixed with one another before the oxide aerosols have passed into the airgel state by coagulation.
The common coagulation of different oxides leads to a particularly intimate mixing of the components in such a way that the secondary flakes of the mixture of the different oxides leaving the separator are built up in a mosaic-like manner. If ; For example, silicon dioxide is generated by reacting silicon tetrachloride in a flame formed from air or oxygen and hydrogen, this initially remains suspended in the gaseous reaction product in the finest form as a sol.
An aluminum oxide prepared in a corresponding manner from aluminum chloride, also suspended in the gaseous reaction products, is mixed with the aforementioned aerosol and the mixture is then coagulated together, the oxide aerosols converting into the gel form and as such in the usual way, for. B. in cyclones, electrostatic precipitators and the like, can be deposited.
The congulation is expediently carried out with the aid of long, hairpin-shaped pipes through which the mixed reaction products are passed in a flow that is as turbulent as possible.
The thickening agent prepared according to the invention can consist of various oxides which can be obtained by the known process of pyrogenic conversion in the gas phase in the presence of oxidizing and / or hydrolyzing agents. Mixtures of silicon dioxide with a few percent aluminum oxide have proven particularly useful. However, it is also possible to use jointly congulated mixtures of silicon dioxide and titanium dioxide or of titanium dioxide and aluminum oxide. By appropriately measuring the gas flows, different mixing ratios can also be obtained, just as ternary mixtures or those with a higher number of components can be produced easily and simply instead of binary ones.
By way of the pyrogenic decomposition of volatile compounds, so-called mixed oxides have already been produced by reacting mixtures of volatile compounds in the manner described above. These products already contain the mixture components in oxide form in the primary particles, i.e. in an ideally intimate distribution. However, such mixed oxides do not have a thickening effect on liquids and pastes. It was therefore surprising that oxide mixtures which are obtained according to the present invention by separate oxide formation but joint coagulation of the various oxides represent highly effective thickeners.
From experience with the mixed oxides one could have concluded that such an intimate mixing would have to lead to a deterioration in the thickening effect.
The progress that can be made with regard to the thickening effect of oxide mixtures by using the present invention is demonstrated below by means of comparative tests. When carrying out these tests, the thickener was added in amounts of 2, 3, 5, 10 and 15 g to 100 ml of water with vigorous stirring, and the viscosity of the dispersion was then determined.
The thickening agent used was 1. the purest silicic acid obtained by pyrogenic means with a primary particle size between 4 and 25 10-6 mm, 2. a pyrogenically obtained mixed oxide from 990/0: silo and 10 / o Al2O3, 3. a subsequently produced mixture from 96.1 o / o pyrogenically obtained silica with 3.9 6/0 pyrogenically obtained aluminum oxide, 4. a jointly coagulated mixture of 97.6 o / o
SiO2 and 2.40 / 0 Al203, 5. a jointly coagulated mixture of 96.46 / 6
SiO2 and 3, 6 / o Al203.
The results of the viscosity determinations are compiled in the table below.

The table shows that the thickening effect of the agents produced by the process according to the invention is considerably increased compared to pure oxides or other types of oxide mixtures or mixed oxides. When using these new thickeners, one can either significantly reduce the addition of the solid substance with the same thickening effect or achieve a much stronger thickening than before with the same addition.
