Process for the production of niobium, tantalum and tungsten The present invention relates to a process for the production of niobium, tantalum and tungsten by reducing the chlorides of these metals with hydrogen.
The production of niobium by reacting one of its halides, such as niobium pentachloride, with hydrogen is already known. For example, US Pat. No. 2,604,395 describes the reduction of niobium pentachloride with hydrogen by the deposition of a firmly adhering metallic L coating on a base made of various metals.
The aforementioned method and other known methods are used, for example, for the surface finishing of workpieces. However, these processes are unsuitable for processing and pure metal production and neither allow large quantities to be produced, nor is continuous production possible.
The process according to the invention is characterized in that hydrogen and niobium, tantalum or tungsten chloride in the gaseous state are passed through a bed of finely divided, solid particles from the metal to be produced or from the hydride of the metal to be produced at an elevated temperature, that the particles are whirled up in the reaction space, the reduced metal being deposited on the particles mentioned.
The molar ratio of hydrogen to metal chloride for niobium is expediently between 80: 1 and 225: 1, for tantalum between 100: 1 and 225: 1 and for tungsten between 3: 1 and 50: 1. The temperature can lie between 675 and 1200 C. A temperature range of about 700 to about 950 C is advantageous. A flow of gas onto fluidized, finely dispersed metal powders have special properties which are used in the fluidized bed processes developed recently, particularly in the field of powder metallurgy.
An apparatus suitable for the continuous production of niobium, tattal or tungsten of high quality is shown in section in the drawing.
Since the metal chlorides of the metals mentioned, which are in the gaseous state, begin to decompose at temperatures above 450 ° C., they are preferably only heated to a temperature below 450 ° C. before being introduced.
In the figure, a vertically arranged cylin drical or tubular reaction vessel 1 is provided, which consists of pure silicon, niobium, Vycor glass (registered trademark), niobium-coated metal or another suitable material that does not exist with the reactants under the conditions responds.
The inlet 2 and the outlets 3 and 4 can be provided on the reaction vessel, and an electrical or other heating device (not shown) can be connected to the reactor for external heating and maintaining a desired temperature in the reactor. A perforated grid or porous filter 5 made of a material that is insensitive to the gases introduced into the reactor is arranged in the bottom or in the lower part of the reactor (see below). A valve-controlled line 6 is let into the bottom of the reactor and connects it to a generator or
Evaporator 7, from which the metal chloride used is fed to the reactor. The generator 7 can also be surrounded by an electrical or other heating device (not shown) or connected to it, which keeps the generator at the desired temperature and causes the evaporation or gasification of the metal chlorides 8, which source from a not shown food source through the Line 9 are introduced into the generator. An inert gas can optionally also be introduced through this line, which gas serves to support the transport of the vaporized chloride into the reactor. A valve-controlled line 10 is connected to the line 6, through which hydrogen can be supplied in any amount.
A valve-controlled line 11 is also connected to line 6, through which hydrogen, an inert gas such as argon, helium, etc., can be admixed with the reducing gas in order to support the liquefaction, s or volatilization process in chamber 1.
In the apparatus shown, for. B. a sufficient amount of highly purified, powdered or ground niobium in a grain size of, for example, less than 0.177 mm and more than 0.074 mm as the initial charge through the inlet 2 to the bottom of the reactor 1, where it rests on the filter body 5.
The quantity, grain size and grain distribution of the niobium introduced in this way is expediently dimensioned in such a way that when the inflow of the gas causing the turbulence is adjusted according to the desired reaction process, a bed with an approximately doubled volume is formed and maintained in the reactor.
After these finely dispersed niobium particles have been introduced, a continuous stream of pure hydrogen is introduced at a linear velocity of about 13 cm / sec through the lines 10 and 6 into the container 1 and through the filter body 5. The finely dispersed niobium particles are whirled up in the chamber in such a way that the space 12 occupied by the moving particles is approximately twice the bulk volume of the finely dispersed metal powder.
If desired, an inert gas from line 11 can be mixed with hydrogen and fed to the reactor with this. The reaction chamber is now heated from the outside to about 800 ° C. by the heating means mentioned, or part of the heat required for the reaction can, if desired, be obtained by preheating the hydrogen or the mixture of hydrogen and the changed gas to a suitable temperature before the same is fed into the reactor.
When the ge desired reaction temperature has been reached, which z. B. is about 750 to 950 C, the gas flow is continued in order to keep the finely dispersed particles in turbulent motion, and the supply of gaseous niobium chloride from the generator 7 through line 6 begins, this being introduced into the reactor by means of an inert gas , wel Ches is introduced into the plant through line 9 or by a portion of the hydrogen gas required for the reaction. Otherwise it can be introduced into the reactor by its own gas pressure.
The molar ratio of hydrogen to niobium pentachloride is advantageously kept constant and relatively high, namely between 80: 1 and 225: 1, in order to achieve optimal results. This corresponds to a considerable excess of hydrogen in relation to the stoichiometric amount. The reduction of niobium chloride takes place according to the equation
EMI0002.0049
2NbC15 + 5H. @ -> <SEP> lOHC1 + 2Nb The niobium metal formed during the reduction of niobium pentachloride is deposited on the finely divided particles.
As a result, their size increases, and when they have grown to a size of more than 0.42 and less than 0.84 mm, the niobium particles no longer remain in suspension under the reaction conditions described above and can pass through the outlet 4 continuously be discharged. Due to its high melting point, its resistance to chemical corrosion, its resistance to high temperatures and its toughness, niobium is suitable for many technical purposes and in particular for the production of high-temperature-resistant alloys.
The unconverted hydrogen and the by-products of the reaction can be withdrawn through outlet 3 with the aid of a condenser, separator or other suitable recovery device (not shown).
When the coarse-grained niobium particles are discharged through the outlet 4, some smaller niobium particles can also be entrained. These can be recovered by sieving and reused. If you also put finely divided metal powder into the reaction chamber several times, the operation can be designed continuously in this way.
The coarse particles withdrawn intermittently or continuously in the lower part of the chamber are predominantly from 0.42 to 0.84 mm in size, while the finely dispersed particles have a size of more than 0.074 mm and less than 0.177 mm.
Example 1 75g niobium powder with a grain size of less than 0.177 mm with about 25% of the grains in a size of less than 0.125 mm were introduced into a reaction cylinder made of Vycor (branded product), which has an inner diameter of 22 It was fitted with a porous filter to hold back the niobium particles in the cylinder. The cylinder was surrounded by a heater that could be used to heat it to the desired temperature from the outside.
The niobium particles were blown into a space which corresponded to twice the bulk volume of the niobium powder by means of an upwardly flowing stream of a mixture of 1.8 liters of hydrogen and 30 ml; min argon. After the introduction of the gas mixture, the temperature of the heater was increased to 850 C. 35.5 g of niobium pentachloride were volatilized in a separate vessel at 255 ° C. and passed into the reaction cylinder through a stream of argon at a rate of 8 ml. The molar ratio of hydrogen to niobium pentachloride was 135: 1.
The reaction process was maintained until after 32/3 hours all of the niobium pentachloride in the separate container had evaporated and carried into the reaction vessel. The bed was then cooled with argon. The weight of the bed was now 85.15 g, an increase of 10.15 g compared to the original weight. This corresponds to an 841 / own yield, based on the niobium in the evaporated niobium pentachloride.
The sieve analysis of the starting material and the end product showed that 18.75 g of the starting material had a particle size of less than 0.125 mm, while after the reaction only 13.85 g of this particle size corresponded. The niobium produced was very pure. Example 2 In a 22 mm cylinder made of silicon dioxide, which was surrounded by a heater, 75 g of finely dispersed niobium powder were put through the upward flow of a gas stream of a mixture of 1.4 l of hydrogen and 40 ml. min argon (the latter volume measured at room temperature), whirled up.
The gas mixture was preheated to 1000 C before it was introduced into the reaction chamber. The temperature was kept at 900 C during the reaction by the external heating of the reactor. The molar ratio of hydrogen to niobium pentachloride was 172: 1.
In a separate, externally heated container, 85.08 g of niobium pentachloride were volatilized at 250 ° C. and introduced into the reactor by a stream of 10 ml / min argon. After a reaction time of 42/3 hours, all of the niobium pentachloride had evaporated and the bed was cooled by a stream of argon.
The weight of the cooled bed was 82.56 g, which corresponds to a weight increase of 7.56 g and a deposition of 88% of the niobium from the niobium pentachloride.
The sieve analysis showed that only 4.95 g of the niobium particles obtained in this way had a grain size of less than 0.074 mm, while 11.6 g of the starting material had a grain size of less than 0.074 mm.
Example 3 75 g of tantalum metal powder with a grain size of less than 0.125 mm, with 18% of the particles being smaller than 0.074 mm, were in a 22 mm SiO 2 cylinder with a filter pad made of SiO 2 wool by means of a gas flow of 1.2 liters of hydrogen and 35 ml; of argon.
The temperature was increased to 900 ° C. In a separate, externally heated container, 32.15 g of TaC15 were volatilized at 250 ° C. and passed into the reactor through an argon stream of 15 m −1 min.
After a reaction time of 41.4 hours, all of the TaC15 had evaporated. The sieve analysis gave the following values: Before the reaction: 13.55 g less than 0.074 mm. After the reaction: 6.50 g smaller than 0.074 mm. The tantalum yield corresponded to 70%, based on the tantalum from the TaC15.
Example 4 75g of tungsten metal particles with a grain size that passed a sieve with 1700 mesh "cm2, with 30% of the grains passing through a sieve with 3140 mesh / cm2, were in a 22 mm Vycor cylinder whirled up by a stream of 1.8, 1.1 min hydrogen and 40 ml, min argon. The temperature of the bed was increased to 875 ° C.
In a separate, externally heated container, 34.6 g of WCIE were evaporated at 347 ° C. and passed into the reactor through an argon stream of 10 ml / min. After a reaction time of 3 hours, 13.2 g of tungsten metal had deposited on the material of the original bed.
The sieve analysis gave the following values: Before the reaction: 22.5 g passed a sieve with 3140 mesh / cm2. After the reaction: 12.5 g pass through a 3140 mesh / cm2 sieve. The yield of tungsten, calculated on the vaporous compound, was 82%. The molar ratio of hydrogen to WCIO in this example was between 3: 1 and 50: 1.
Example S In a cylindrical reactor 45.7 cm in diameter and 27.45 cm high with a conical bottom piece and with inlet and outlet lines for continuous operation, hydrogen, preheated to 1000 C, was passed through a plurality of openings upwards which were located near the conical bottom piece of the reactor. The reactor contained a bed of finely divided NiO particles, which were held in the reactor by a carrier made of SiO 2 wool. The niobium powder had grain sizes of more than 0.074 to less than 0.177 mm, and the bulk volume of the same took up about Third of the reactor content.
The hydrogen was introduced at a rate of 36.35 cm / sec; to keep the niobium particles in a turbulent state. This corresponds to a ratio of 120 mol of hydrogen to 1 mol of niobium pentachloride. The temperature of the bed was 800 C. The niobium pentachloride was evaporated in a separate, externally heated container at a constant rate of 0.35 mol / min and introduced into the reactor by passing argon over the surface of the steaming niobium pentachloride.
By adding more finely divided metal powder, approximately 56.8 kg of niobium particles of the grain size given above were always present in the reaction chamber, while part of the coarse-grained particles that had been formed by the deposition of the niobium resulting from reduction on the suspended particles were removed intermittently.
The removed particles were sorted and the finest fraction was returned to the reaction chamber. The coarse-grained particles with particle sizes of less than 0.84 mm and more than 0.42 mm were obtained in an amount of 1.725 kg per hour, which corresponds to a yield of about 900 / g based on the niobium pentachloride introduced into the plant The reaction space was kept at a temperature of about 800 ° C. by supplying heat through the reactor wall.
The unconverted hydrogen and the by-products formed during the reaction were removed from the reactor and passed through a cooler and a gas cleaner, whereby the unconverted hydrogen could be freed from the by-products and fed back into the plant. The niobium obtained was of extremely high purity and, as an alloy component, was very suitable for the production of high-temperature and oxidation-resistant alloys.
Suitable starting materials include NbCh. TaCIS, and WCIE.
In the reduction of niobium pentachloride you can, for. B. a molar ratio H2; NbC15 of 120 apply. If molar ratios in the lower part of the specified range are used, sufficient inert volatile gas must also be used to ensure effective fluidization of the metal particles.
The evaporation of the metal chlorides is expediently carried out in a separate closed reaction vessel that is connected to the main reactor. The chloride can be heated up and driven directly into the reaction vessel. The chloride is preferably evaporated at temperatures below 450C. If desired, it can be introduced into the stream of hydrogen or low temperature inert gas which is fed into the reactor.
The evaporation of the metal chloride can also be brought about by passing a small stream of high-temperature argon through the vapor space of the evaporator, the temperature of the metal chloride vapor preferably not exceeding 450.degree.
The depth of the reaction space 12 in the reactor can also be varied. You can z. B. be about 12.5 to 20 cm, the height of the resting the Schüttun g is about 5 to 10 cm, and the linear velocity of the hydrogen, for example, should be 21 to 36 cm./sec. For implementation on a larger scale, a much deeper space and a much greater gas velocity can be used. If a refractory tubular reactor is to be used, it can advantageously be made of silicon dioxide.
This material can be used in a very pure form, so that contamination of the metallic product, even in trace amounts, is avoided. However, stainless steel reactors can also be used.
The diameter and length of the reactor can be adapted to the required production volume and gas velocity. The total content of the reaction vessel is advantageously chosen up to three times the height of the space 12 taken by the whirled up metal powder in order to avoid an undesired overflow of the solid and to allow a better withdrawal of the end product. The reactor is preferably heated by electrical resistance heating. Before it is introduced into the reactor, the hydrogen can be preheated to almost or above the intended reaction temperature, so that little or no additional heat has to be supplied through the walls of the reactor.
The filter or carrier 5 in the lower part of the reactor below the reaction zone can be used to distribute the gaseous reactants that are introduced into this zone. As mentioned, a cushion or a layer of silicon dioxide wool or a similar non-reactive porous material can be used for this purpose, which is held in the interior of the reactor by means of a suitable holding member. For larger systems, porous plates or other suitable distributors can also be used.
The finely dispersed metal particles used as starting material or cores for the deposition can be produced, among other things, by crushing and sieving pure metal particles from previous conversion processes. In the case of continuous operation, the bed can be supplemented by feeding finely dispersed metal particles via a suitable feed line into the reactor by means of a drying conveyor or the like according to the amount of material withdrawn.
The coarse-grained material can preferably be conveyed out by suction or in some other way through a suitable outlet line provided with a valve, which can be arranged approximately at the level of the floor. The particles can also be removed using gravity.
