la fig. 1 montre une vue en élévation latérale de l'appareil;
la fig. la en montre une vue en plan;
la fig. 2 montre une vue en coupe verticale axiale du poinçon;
la fig. 3 montre une vue en plan du dessous du poinçon représenté à la fig. 2 ;
Method for cutting and applying a piece of metal foil on a flat surface and apparatus for carrying out this method and applying this method
The present patent relates to a method and apparatus for cutting and applying a piece of metal foil, to a flat surface. It also relates to an application of the method, for covering with a piece of metal foil the exposed surface of a product contained in a box.
It is known to place aluminum foil discs less than 0.04mu thick on boxes filled with shoe polish and the like, then to fold the peripheral edge of the disc around the upper edge of the box body. by applying the cover to it, in order to securely clamp the disc using the cover when the latter is fitted to the body of the box, this operation being carried out by placing by hand a previously cut disc on the surface of the material filling the box. It is also known to cut the disc from a metal sheet using a punch and die tool.
Now, one of the drawbacks of this known process is that, when the discs are less than 0.04mu thick, the punch, after a relatively short period of use, no longer manages to clearly cut the sheet, because traces of aluminum from the foil adhere to the inside of the cutting tool, rendering the tool unusable.
The aim of the invention is to eliminate the aforementioned drawbacks while allowing the operation to be carried out entirely mechanically.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that a cutting station is intermittently supplied with a strip of metal foil, a zone of said strip is clamped to said station, in which the part will be cut, an article is directed having the surface to be covered by said piece of sheet towards the cutting station where this article is placed in axial alignment with said clamped area, a punch is moved to cut the piece from this strip, the cut piece is held on the punch thanks to the application of a vacuum and the movement of the punch is continued until the part held on it is deposited on the surface to be covered, the vacuum is removed and a pressurized fluid is made to act on the part to detach the part deposited of the punch.
The apparatus for implementing the method is characterized in that it comprises a punch cooperating with a die composed of two perforated plates, means for bringing the two plates together in order to clamp an area of the strip between them, means suitable for intermittently advancing to the die articles having a flat surface to be covered, means for moving the punch, for cutting a part in the clamping zone of the strip and for applying the cut part to the flat surface to be covered, means suitable for exerting a vacuum on the cut piece to hold it on the punch until it has been applied to said surface, then for removing this vacuum, means for causing a pressurized fluid to act on the cut piece, after the removal of said depression, in order to separate the part from the punch,
and means for moving the punch back.
An embodiment of the object of the invention will be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, to which:
fig. 1 shows a side elevational view of the apparatus;
fig. la shows a plan view;
fig. 2 shows a view in axial vertical section of the punch;
fig. 3 shows a bottom plan view of the punch shown in FIG. 2;
figs. 4 to 6 show three phases of applying the cut disc to the surface of the contents of a filled box.
The apparatus shown in the drawing and used for cutting and applying an aluminum foil disc with a thickness of less than 0.04 mm on the surface of metal boxes 8 filled with shoe polish, comprises a punch 10 cooperating with upper and lower perforated plates 11, 12 together forming a die, a pair of rollers 13 ensuring the intermittent movement of a metal strip 14 composed for example of an aluminum foil, from a supply reel 15, between the plates 11 and 12 of the die, a second pair of rollers 16 advancing the cut strip towards a winding reel 17, as well as a spoked wheel 1 not shown in FIG.
1 ensuring the intermittent supply of articles delimited by the surfaces to be covered by the aluminum foil discs cut by the punch in the strip 14, to a station where these articles are placed axially below the plates 11 and 12 .
The top of the punch 10 is fixed to a rod 10 'and its lower face is shaped in the shape of a cup, a circular cavity 9 (Figs. 2 and 3) being formed on this lower face. An obturator 19 made of plastic, elastic and porous material fills the cavity 9, the external face of the obturator flush with the lower end of the wall of the punch which surrounds the cavity, this lower end having a flat circular face. Vacuum openings 18 pass in a direction parallel to the axis of the punch through the wall of the latter which surrounds the cavity 9 and communicate with an annular vacuum manifold 20 formed in the solid part of the punch, above the end. closed cavity, this collector communicating with a passage 21 suitable for being connected to a vacuum pump.
Another passage 22 pierced in the solid part of the punch 10 communicates through its internal end with the cavity 9 and is arranged so as to be able to be connected by its external end to a source of compressed air, the flow rate of which is controlled by a non-valve. represented.
Each of the plates 11, 12 has a central opening 11, or 12 ′, these two openings being coaxial and of the same diameter, identical to the diameter which it is desired to give to the disc to be cut from the strip 14, but slightly larger than the diameter of the surface to be covered. The openings 11 ', 12' are also placed in axial alignment with the punch 10 and the diameter of these openings is slightly larger than that of the punch, so as to reserve during cutting a clearance of 0.13 mm between the punch wall and openings 11, and 12r ..
The plates 11, 12 are brought together just before the cutting operation, in order to firmly clamp the sheet between them during this operation, and they are moved away from each other to allow the advance movement of the cutting. bandaged. The diameter of the cavity 9 of the punch is slightly larger than the outside diameter of the open end of the box 8, leaving a clearance of 0.08 mm between the wall of the cavity 9 and the wall of the box to be covered . The box 8 comprises an outer peripheral shoulder 23 near its upper edge, a shoulder on which the cover bears when it is applied to the box; the aforementioned clearance only applies to the outer surface of the wall of the box, above this shoulder.
The operation of the device described is as follows:
Band 14 is intermittently supplied from 1a. supply reel between the two plates 1.1, 12 of the die which, after each movement of intermittent advance, are fully brought together as shown in FIG. 4, in order to forcefully clamp a certain length of this strip between them, from which the next disc will then be cut. With each advance movement of the sheet, a metal box 8 filled with shoe polish is directed by the spoke wheel 1 before receiving its cover, to a position below and in axial alignment with the openings of the plates 11 , 12.
The punch, in which the vacuum is connected while the compressed air is cut, passes through the opening 11 ', comes into contact with the sheet clamped between these plates, and finally cuts a disc 25 (fig. 5) in this sheet. .
At the time of this cutting, the disc is pressed firmly against the punch by the depression produced through the vacuum ports 18. This depression must be relatively strong so that the disc is cut clean all around and comes off cleanly and simultaneously over its entire periphery without leaving any metallic burr in the die plates. The punch 10 continues to descend, after having cut the disc still strongly maintained in contact with the surface of the punch, while the latter continues its movement, until the moment when the disc 25 comes into contact with the surface of the box 8 The disc is then applied against this surface by the elastic shutter 19.
The wall of the punch which surrounds the cavity descends (Fig. 6) and crosses the open top of the box so as to apply the projecting peripheral edge 14 '(Fig. 6) of the disc against the outer surface of this wall.
At the end of the operation, the vacuum is stopped and the valve is actuated which controls the inflow of compressed air which then enters the cavity 9 and passes through the porous shutter to exert a certain pressure on the disc and thus detach it from the surface of the punch in order to ensure its retention on the surface of the shoe polish during the subsequent retraction of the punch.
