Kupferacetat, propionsaures Kupfer, buttersaures Kupfer, Kupferstearat, lactat, -benzoat usw.
B. adipin- saurem Hexamethylendiamin, s,ebacinsaurem Äthylen- diamin, korksaurem Tetramethylendiamin usw.
Die folgende Tabelle zeigt die Hitzestabilität einiger Polyamide, die nach dem :erfindungsgemässen Verfahren hergestellt wurden, im Vergleich zu nicht stabilisiertem Material, wobei die vorstehend beschrie benen Testmethoden angewendet werdkn (B = Biege test;
W = Wickeltest):

Process for producing a heat-stabilized, synthetic, linear polyamide The present invention relates to a process for producing a heat-stabilized, synthetic, linear polyamide, characterized in that an aminocarboxylic acid, its lactam, a dicarboxylic acid diamine salt or a mixture of the compounds mentioned in the presence of polycondensation or polymerization favor:
A copper salt and a hydrogen halide salt of a non-volatile organic base are polycondensed or polymerized using catalysts.
Synthetic linear polyamides can, for example, be obtained by polycondensation or polymerisation of aminocaproic acid or its lactam, of adipirneic acid hexamethylenediamine, of oi-aminoundecanic acid or of mixtures of these components. It is a known disadvantage of these polyamides that they become four-brittle when exposed to heat and are therefore not suitable for use in continuous operation at temperatures above 100.degree.
Numerous stabilizers have already become known which prevent the embrittlement of polyamides at higher temperatures; and decrease in the presence of oxygen. For example, certain effects are achieved through the incorporation of copper salts, halides, certain acids of phosphorus or the mixture of these three components.
It has also been proposed to build organic heat stabilizers into the polyamides, e.g. B. amines, mercaptobenzimidazole or NN'-polymethylene-bis-o-hydroxybenzamides.
A particularly effective heat stabilization can be achieved by combining copper salts and inorganic halides: Unfortunately, it is precisely these substances that are not compatible with one another, they tend to form solid deposits, so that it is not possible to polymerize them homogeneously in the melt flow. With the help of other admixing processes to the finished polymer, e.g.
B. in the screw press or on the calender, the stabilizers can be trouble-free: incorporate, but ver cause additional work in this way.
It has now been found that the disadvantages described can be completely avoided if a copper salt and a non-volatile organic base salt are chosen as stabilizers. Suitable copper salts for these purposes include the copper salts of organic acids, such as. B.
Copper acetate, copper propionate, copper butyrate, copper stearate, lactate, lactate, etc. However, inorganic copper salts can also be used.,
as long as they have the necessary solubility in the polyamide-forming starting materials and sufficient thermal stability under polycondensation conditions. These conditions are met, for example, copper (2) chloride, copper (2) bromide, copper (2) sulfate, copper (2) nitrate and copper ammonium complex salts.
The following are particularly suitable for the process according to the invention: well the halogenated water, acidic salts of quaternary ammonium bases, e.g.
B. the chlorine, bromine or iodine hydrates of Benzyltrimethylammonium- hydroxyd Triton B (registered trademark) or Tetraäthylammomumhydroxyd. In addition, the hydrohalic acid salts of piperazine, piperidm, benzylamine, morpholine, tri-isobutylamine, tri-n-propylamine,
Ethylenediamine, hexamethylenediamine can be used.
The most beneficial of all heat stabilization effects are iodine hydrates of poorly volatile organic bases together with copper salts: The bromine hydrates are usually as iodine hydrates in the. The effect is only slight, while the chlorine hydrates generally follow at a great distance.
The copper salts and the salts of the organic bases mentioned are preferably used in concentrations of up to about 0.2%, based on the polyamide-forming substances. With a higher dosage, no increase in heat stabilization can be expected. (see table).
Heat-stabilized polyamides are conveniently prepared by adding the stabilizers to the molten monomers, e.g. B. e-caprolactam, (") -Oenanthlactam, amino undecanoic acid or the liquefied starting salt with water, z.
B. adipic acid hexamethylenediamine, s, ebacic acid ethylenediamine, suberic acid tetramethylenediamine etc.
The stabilizers generally dissolve smoothly in all of these polyamide-forming starting materials and generally remain completely homogeneously distributed in the melt during the polycondensation or polymerization, which can be carried out discontinuously or continuously, under pressure or without pressure. .
The heat stabilizers can also be added to the monomeric starting product when anhydrous or practically anhydrous lactams are polymerized, such as. B. in the rapid polymerization of E-caprolactam in the presence of alkali metals, or in the continuous pressure polymerization with less than 0.4 0 / @ water as a catalyst.
In these cases, anhydrous copper salt can be dissolved in lactam.
Example 1 In a dissolving vessel of a polymerization plant equipped with a stirrer, 250 kg of a-caprolactam and 20 liters of water as a polycondensation catalyst are liquefied at 80-85 C, followed by the hot filtered solutions of 125 g of copper acetate (1 mol of water of crystallization) and 500 g of hexa methylenebis @ trimethylammonium bromide in 1 liter of hot water. The yellowish,
The water-clear mixture is pressed into an autoclave by means of compressed nitrogen and polymerized for 21/2 hours under pressure and, after the steam has been released, for a further 6 hours without pressure in the known manner at 250 C.
The contents of the autoclave are then poured into tape form and solidified in cold water. The solidified band is granulated and the resulting granules are freed from residual low molecular weight components by boiling them with water.
From the dried granulate, which has a relative solution viscosity (in sulfuric acid) of l? = 2.50 shows, test rods are injected and tested for heat damage in the oven with access to air. At 150 C, deformation occurs after 1200 hours, while rods made of non-stabilized polycaprolactam break after just two hours of heating.
Example 2 In an apparatus according to Example 1, 200 kg of adipic acid hexamethylenediamine and 80 liters of water as a polycondensation catalyst are liquefied at 90-95 C and the hot, concentrated, aqueous solutions of 100 g of copper (2) chloride (2 mol of crystal water) and 400 g of benzyl trimethyl ammonium iodide were added.
The homogeneous mixture is polymerized in an autoclave under pressure for 3 hours and then further 6 hours without pressure at 280.degree.
From the contents of the autoclave (poly-hexamethylem-diammonium-adipate) a sample is drawn off as a 1 mm thick strand and heated to 150 ° C. in the oven with access to air. Wrapped around a 1 mm mandrel, the strand shows cracks only after 2400 hours of heating, while the non-stabilized polyamide is already brittle after 10 hours of heating.
Example 3 A 6 m long and 25 cm wide tube for continuous pressure polymerization is charged at 250 ° C. and under a pressure of 60 atmospheres using suitable pumps, 20 kg / per hour of e-caprolactam containing 0.3 'o / @ water as a polycondensation catalyst, 0.02% anhydrous copper (2) acetate and 0,
2% morpholinium iodine added. At the lower end of the polymerizer are continuously 20 kg / hour. The polymer is drawn off in strand form, cooled with water and granulated. After washing out the low molecular weight fractions, the polyamide shows a relative solution viscosity (in sulfuric acid) of = 2.85.
Samples made from this material become brittle at 170 C after 390 hours, while non-stabilized polycaprolactam is damaged after only half an hour's heating.
Example 4 In an autoclave equipped with a high-speed stirrer, 25 kg of absolutely anhydrous lactam are heated to 240 ° C. under a nitrogen atmosphere. The hot, filtered solutions of 5 g of anhydrous copper (2) chloride and 25 g of tetra-n-butylammonium iodide in 100 g of molten, anhydrous capralactam each are added via a lock.
After stirring for a further quarter of an hour, 25 g of sodium metal as a polymerization catalyst, dispersed in 100 cm-3 of toluene, are added dropwise, whereupon the polymerization begins immediately.
After 30 minutes there is no further increase in viscosity and the contents of the autoclave are emptied in strand form under nitrogen pressure via a cooling trough and granulated.
The polyamide has a relative solution viscosity (in sulfuric acid) of q = 3.1 and, after extraction and shaping into test bars in the embrittlement test, results in a heat stability of 1700 hours at 150 C compared to 2 hours for the usual restabilized material.
Two different test methods are used to test the polyamides stabilized according to the invention: 1. the bending test on the ASTM standard tension rod (method D 638-52T) and 2. the winding test according to USP No. 2,705,227 on monofilaments with a diameter of 1 mm .
These methods can be carried out as follows: A large number of samples are freely suspended in the drying cabinet with air admission on all sides and heated to 150 or 170 ° C. After a period of time corresponding to the degree of stabilization, 5 samples are taken and cooled to room temperature in the desiccator.
In the bending test, the test bars are bent by hand by 180 ° C until the ends touch. If more than one sample breaks, the material is considered damaged or embrittled.
In the winding test, a monofilament is wound around a 1 mm thick steel wire so that the turn comes to lie next to the turn. The heating of the samples is stopped as soon as cracks can be seen on one of the 5: wound samples with the magnifying glass.
The following table shows the heat stability of some polyamides which were produced by the process according to the invention, in comparison with non-stabilized material, the test methods described above being used (B = bending test;
W = winding test):

As the table shows, the new stabilizers can increase the heat stability of polyamide moldings by about 600-800 times that of the non-stabilized material.
The stabilization gives the polyamide moldings an average service life of 3 months at 150 C, which at 120 already corresponds to a service life of around 2 years. This opens up a whole range of application areas for the heat-stabilized polyamides that require higher temperature resistance, such as B.
Conveyor belts for dryers, sieves for hot bulk goods, gears, bearing shells and other gear parts that run in hot oil, bristles for warm cleaning systems, pipes for hot liquid installations, etc.
The deformability of the polyamides stabilized according to the invention is generally not impaired in any way. They can be spun smoothly from the melt flow into threads that can be processed into perfect continuous yarns or staple fibers. Processing on screw presses into wires, hoses, foils,
Pipes and other profiles Finally, injection, pressing, casting and sintering of the heat-stabilized polyamides according to the invention is easily possible using commercially available machines.
The added stabilizers do not require any other working conditions than the usual materials.
