Process for the preparation of intermediates for the synthesis of azomethine dyes of the isoindolone series The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of intermediates for the synthesis of azomethine dyes of the isoindolone series.
Azomethine dyes, which are formally derived from 2 molecules of phthalimide and an aromatic diamine, with one carbonyl oxygen atom of the phthalimide being replaced by an imide group belonging to the diamine residue, are yellow, orange to red pigment dyes.
The dyes derived from the tri- and tetrahalophthalimides, including especially those which contain the remainder of aromatic diamines, which the amino groups in conjugated double bonds, are particularly valuable due to their greater color strength and excellent light and migration fastness in organic plastics associated positions included.
These azomethine dyes are produced by condensation of the diamino compounds with those derivatives of phthalimide which instead of a carbonyl oxygen contain a more mobile divalent radical, for example a sulfur atom or an imino group, or with tautomeric For men of these compounds.
One method for producing such condensable phthalimide derivatives consists in the urea melt of the phthalimides in the presence of molybdenum catalysts such as ammonium molybdate, whereby phthalamidines are formed, which can also be referred to as 3-imino-isoindolin-1-ones.
However, this process fails in the case of negatively substituted phthalimides, in particular those with higher halogen substituents, because by-products which are difficult to remove and which contaminate the end products in such a way that they are unusable are formed.
It has now been found that intermediate products for the azomethine dye synthesis of the isoindo-tone series of great purity and in very good yields are obtained if a preferably negatively substituted 1,3,3 - trihalogen - isoindolenine is used , suitably in an inert organic solution, under mild Be conditions at least the equimolecular amount of a non-metal-containing hydroxyl compound R-OH, where R is hydrogen, an alkyl,
Hydroxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or acyl radical of a carboxylic acid is allowed to act, the corresponding 3,3-dihalo-isoindolin-1-ones being formed with the formation of R-halogen.
As negative ring substituents, the 1, 3, 3-trihalo-isoindolenines used here can contain, for example, nitro groups, trifluoromethyl groups, alkyl or arylsulfonyl groups, but in particular several halogens such as fluorine, chlorine and bromine.
Technically particularly important starting materials in the benzo radical are 1,3,3-trichloroisoindolenines substituted by 3 or 4 halogen and preferably chlorine atoms. This as well as the other 1,3 which can be used according to the invention are obtained
3-trihalo-isoindolenine according to a known process by reacting appropriately substituted phthalimides with two moles of phosphorus pentahalide in an inert organic solution.
Inert organic solvents and diluents which can be used in the process according to the invention are, for example, hydrocarbons, such as ligroin or higher-boiling petroleum fractions with boiling points of 150 to 250 ° C., cyclohexane, tetrahydronaphthalene, decahydronaphthalene, halogenated hydrocarbons such as chloroform, tetrachlorethylene, o-dichlorobenzene,
Use nitro hydrocarbons such as nitrobenzene, nitrotoluene, nitroxylene, and ethers such as dibutyl ether, ethylene glycol dimethyl, diethyl or dibutyl ether, dioxane. The reaction temperatures are expediently chosen as low as possible and are preferably at room temperature.
Depending on the reactivity of the components, however, higher reaction temperatures may also be indicated, for example with tertiary alcohols those of 50 to 100 C.
As non-metal-containing hydroxyl compounds in the process according to the invention are primarily aliphatic, but also araliphatic or alicyclic alcohols, for example methanol, ethanol, butanol, oetanol, benzyl alcohol, cyclohexanol, ethylene glycol,
Methoxy or ethoxy ethanol. Aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acids can also be used, the corresponding acid chlorides being formed. For example, acetic acid, propionic acid, chloroacetic acid, benzoic acid, chlorobenzoic acids can be used.
Hydrophilic organic solvents and diluents such as dioxane can also be hydrolyzed with water. 1 mole of hydroxyl compound is always required per mole of 1,3,3-trichloroisoindolenine; but a small excess can be used without harm.
The formation of 3,3-dihalo-isoindolin-1-ones under the conditions according to the invention is surprising, because the 1,3,3-trichloroisoindolenines used were known to be decomposed by water to phthalimides, because all three halogens are very flexible on the hetero ring.
In the gradual replacement of halogen, the feasibility of which was neither known nor foreseeable, the replacement of a three-position halogen atom by hydroxyl and then, with further elimination of hydrogen halide, the formation of the partially known 1-halo-isoindol-3-ones could be expected with just as much probability, which, however, are unsuitable for the desired azomethine synthesis.
The 3,3-dihalo-isoindolin-l-ones obtainable by the process according to the invention can either be reacted directly with aromatic polyamines to give the corresponding azomethine pigments, or they can often be advantageously used first with ammonia or with primary organic amines, which are found in dry form and used in excess,
convert them into the corresponding 3-imino-isoindolin-1-ones and react these with the aromatic polyamines with elimination of ammonia or organic amine to form the desired azomethine pigments.
From a technical point of view, it is worth mentioning that, thanks to the mild reaction conditions, the inventive replacement of the halogen in 1,3,3-trihalo-isoindolenine can be carried out in the presence of the aromatic polyamines, so that the valuable azomethine pigments can be used in one batch can produce without isolation of intermediate stages.
The production of azomethine dyes from 3,3-dihalogeno- or 3-imino-isoindolin-1-ones, which contain 3 or 4 halogen atoms on the benzo radical, is the subject of the invention of Swiss patent no. 346218.
In the following examples, the parts are parts by weight, unless otherwise expressly mentioned, and the temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.
