Process for impregnating leather The subject of this main patent is a process for impregnating leather in which the leather is treated with solutions of condensation products from alcoholates of polyvalent metals, in particular aluminum, and acidic higher molecular organic derivatives of phosphoric acid, in particular acidic phosphoric acid esters of higher molecular weight organic hydroxyl compounds , treated in organic solvents or oils.
This impregnation gives the leather water-repellent properties as well as water resistance and water impermeability. The process is primarily of interest for the production of undersides.
It has now been found that it is advantageous to use impregnating agents which still contain silicone oils in the process of the main patent. This achieves a considerable improvement in the so-called dynamic water resistance, that is, the water resistance under mechanical stress. This effect can be improved even further if you also use hard wax.
With silicone oils alone or with wax impregnation alone, one does not yet achieve a really satisfactory increase in dynamic water resistance, which also applies to the use of the impregnation agents of the process of the main patent alone. The effect is only satisfactory with the two newly mentioned ingredients. It is possible to reduce the normally .necessary amounts of the impregnation agent compared to the method of the main patent.
The mixtures described above are preferably used in the customary manner by spray application, application machines or by dipping. Favorable application concentrations of the organically dissolved impregnation agent mixtures are 2 to 15%,
preferably 5 to 10% solutions. When spraying with a spray gun, it is best to use around 10% solutions,
When diving, it is best to use about 50% solutions. The solutions should preferably contain 15-50% of the condensation products in question, 15-50% silicone oil and 0-30% hard wax.
Suitable solvents are chlorinated hydrocarbons such as trichlorethylene, perchlorethylene and the like, volatile hydrocarbons such as gasoline fractions with a boiling point of 50-200, and also other organic solvents such as methyl, ethyl ketone, cyclohexanone, butyl acetic acid ester and the like.
The condensation products in question are described in detail in the main patent. These are primarily condensates made from aluminum isopropylate or aluminum butylate with preferably monoalkyl phosphoric acid esters with alkyl radicals of at least 6 carbon atoms. However, condensation products derived from corresponding dialkyl phosphoric acid esters can also be used.
Titanium or zirconium alcoholates can also be used instead of aluminum alcoholates.
The known bifunctional and trifunctional methylsiloxanes with reactive hydrogen atoms as well as other polymers of organosilicon compounds which are formed by a -Si-O-Si group or by other bonds, such as eg. B.
--Si-CH .-- Si- or -Si-C., H4 Si- are characterized. Organic radicals, such as alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkylaryl or alkoxy groups, can be bound to the silicon atoms of the silicones. Of particular interest are organosilicon polymerizates which, in addition to the organic residues, such as B.
Methyl, nor hydrogen atoms: contain. These pro products are in the form of solutions in organic solvents such as. B. methylene chloride, commercially, which also usually catalysts such. B. Titansäuretetrabutyles, ter contain.
Natural or synthetic hard waxes can be used as an additional impregnation component, such as. B. paraffin wax, beeswax, carnauba wax and especially montan wax or ester or carbonamide waxes of a synthetic nature. The various components can be resolved without difficulty in the solutions according to the main patent.
While one is pretty much independent of the type of solvent mentioned when using the. Tauchverfah rens, when using the spray method for impregnating leather are only solvent mixtures that contain higher boiling fractions, such as heavy gasoline, toluene or xylene.
By adding small amounts of mineral oil, it is possible to ensure that the impregnating agents do not adhere too strongly to the leather surface layer when spraying, but rather penetrate into the leather. Low boiling solvents are unsuitable in this case, as they evaporate too quickly when the diluted impregnation agent is sprayed and the impregnation agent is mainly deposited on the leather surface.
Even when using the immersion process, the distribution of the impregnation agent in the leather can be regulated by changing the proportion of higher-boiling solvents. The method according to the invention can be used for all types of leather, especially also for the production of pastel-colored or white suede or grain leather, that is to say upper leather.
Examples 1. 20 parts by weight of the solution of a condensation product of 204 parts of aluminum isopropylate and 144 parts by weight of monoalkylphosphoric acid ester (alkyl radicals C, 1 _, - cl,) in 500 parts by weight of Trichloräthyl.en are mixed with 30 parts by weight of Tri - diluted chlorethylene and then mixed with 50 parts by weight of a solution consisting of 5 parts of montan wax, 7.5 parts of silicone oil (silicone oil WS 60 from the trade,
calculated from dry matter) and 110 parts of trichlorethylene. The finished solution contains about 1211 / o impregnating ingredients. The solution is suitable for the impregnation of chrome leather by dipping, which gives excellent dynamic water resistance effects.
2. 2.5% montan wax and 3.7% silicone oil were dissolved in 70 parts of heavy gasoline (boiling point 140 to 200). This solution was mixed with 20 parts of the solution of the condensation product of aluminum propylate and a monoalkylphosphoric acid ester mixture used in Example 1. This impregnation agent is particularly suitable for spraying chrome upper leather.
After drying and a storage time of a few days, the leather was tested in the Maese.r machine:
