Process for the preparation of dihydroquinacridones The invention relates to a process for the preparation of dihydroquinacridones. These dihydroquinacridones are valuable intermediate compounds for dyes and in particular for pigments, as is described in patent no.
The compounds prepared according to the invention are 6,13-dihydroquinacridones of the composition

where R is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy groups having 1 to 4 carbon atoms. One compound erroneously assigned the above structure is described by Pendle and Dutt (Journal of the Indian Chemical Society 9/1932 / 67-70).
These authors fused D.ianiline dihydroterephthalic acid diethyl ester with sodium ethylate and obtained a yellow, crystalline compound which is soluble in aqueous alkali and differs in its properties from the compounds prepared according to the invention.
The process according to the invention is characterized in that corresponding dialkyl-2,5-diaryl-amino-3,6-dihydroterephthalates are cyclized directly. The cyclization can e.g. B. be done by heat treatment. The heat treatment: takes place advantageously in the presence of an inert high-boiling liquid medium, e.g. B. with a boiling point of 240 to 300 C, although higher-boiling liquids can also be used.
Examples of suitable high-boiling liquids are the a- and ss-methyl-naphthalenes, diphenyl-diphenyloxyd and mineral oils that boil above 250 C, as well as mixtures of the same.
A particularly effective liquid medium is a eutectic mixture of 23.5% by weight diphenyl and 76.5% diph.enyloxyd, which is sold under the name Dowtherm A (branded product). The amount of the inert liquid medium is not critical.
The dialkyl 2,5-diarylamino-3,6-dihydroterephthalates used as starting materials can be obtained by reacting aromatic amines with dialkyl succinylsuccinates. Suitable aromatic amines for this reaction are not only aniline but also the monohaloanilines, e.g.
B. the p-, m- or o-chlorine, bromine, fluorine and -lodaniline, the mono alkyl and monoalkoxyanilines with 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkyl or alkoxy groups, eg.
B. the o-, m- or p-toluidines, p-butylaniline or p-butoxyaniline. The dialkyl succinyl succinates can be obtained by condensation of 2 moles of a dialkyl succinate, e.g. B. in the presence of a sodium alkoxide obtained who the, .by adding the dialkyl succinate, z.
B. D. diethyl succinate, a dispersion of sodium ethylate in the above-mentioned eutectic mixture of diphenyl and diphenyl oxide is added, heated, after the reaction has ended, the excess acid is neutralized with a suspension of sodium bicarbonate in water and the resulting aqueous layer separates.
Then you can use a large excess (about five times the theoretical amount) of the arylamine, e.g. B. aniline, together with a small proportion (for example 0.035 mol) of aromatic amine hydrochloride (for example aniline hydrochloride) and carry out a second condensation reaction by heating under vacuum and separating off the water formed during the reaction .
The mixture can then be neutralized again with sodium carbonate in water and the excess aromatic amine (e.g. aniline) can be distilled off in vacuo.
To carry out the process according to the invention, one can proceed as follows: The vacuum is raised by introducing an inert gas, e.g. B. nitrogen, and cyclis.iert the in solution be sensitive dialkyl - 2,5 - diarylamino - 3,6-dihydrotere- phthalate by 3 @ - to 3 hours of heating in the absence of oxygen at 240 to 300 C. The product can be isolated by cooling the reaction mixture, filtering it and washing the high-boiling diluent with ethyl alcohol.
Instead of. any other inert and oxygen-free gas of nitrogen can be used as the inert gas who the, z. B. carbon dioxide, helium etc. The presence of oxygen causes oxidation of the dihydroquinacridone. In general, the cyclization is complete after one hour. Example 1 A glass-lined reaction vessel is suitable for carrying out the reaction.
is seen ver with a strong stirrer and a distillation column with attached condenser for the product. The vessel should be jacketed for temperature control by circulating a suitable heat transfer medium. Means for evacuating the condenser system and for purging it with inert gas should also be available. Such a vessel is filled with 250 parts of Dowtherm A (manufactured by Dow Chemical Company, V. St. A.).
The vessel is dimensioned in such a way that it is filled to a maximum of one third by this loading.
The starting material can be obtained as follows: The contents of the vessel are heated to about 120 ° C., the oxygen is displaced with nitrogen, the vacuum is removed and the vacuum is released by introducing nitrogen. Then 10.35 parts of sodium metal cut into small pieces are added, the mixture is left to stand without stirring until the sodium has melted, and then stirred so vigorously that the molten sodium is broken up into small spheres. The batch is then cooled to 55 to 60 ° C. also under nitrogen.
With the stirrer running, 24 parts of anhydrous ethylene alcohol (denatured with 5 11 / o methanol) are then slowly added over the course of about 6 hours at such a rate that the temperature rises to a maximum of about 75.degree. After the alcohol has been added, the temperature is kept between 70 and 80 ° C. for about 2 hours. Then 50 parts of diethyl succinate are quickly added, the batch is heated to 95 to 100 ° C. in the course of 2 1 -: @ hours and is kept at this temperature for about 7 hours, stirring constantly and working under nitrogen.
The latter period is not particularly critical; equally good results are achieved in 14 hours. However, a period of 6 to 8 hours is preferred for ease of work. The batch is then neutralized by adding a slurry of 40 parts sodium bicarbonate in about 200 parts water at about 50 ° C., stirring for about 20 minutes, allowing to stand at the bottom of the vessel to form an aqueous layer and draining the aqueous layer.
The batch is then washed with a solution of 50 parts of sodium chloride in 300 parts of water at about 70 ° C. and the aqueous layer again withdrawn from the bottom of the vessel. 160 parts of aniline are then added, followed by 0.55 parts of aniline hydrochloride, and the apparatus is evacuated through the water-cooled condenser. The charge is heated to 108 to 110 ° C. for 3 hours at a pressure of 34 to 35 mm Hg (abs.) By circulating air in the jacket of the distillation column.
All of the aniline passing over with the condensation water is replaced. When the heating is complete, the vacuum is broken by introducing nitrogen, the batch is cooled to below 60 ° C., a solution of 0.25 part of sodium carbonate in 5.5 parts of water is added and the mixture is stirred for about 15 minutes.
Then evacuate again and keep the temperature below 60 C until all the water is eaten away. The batch is then heated to about 140 C at a pressure of 25 mm Hg and the distillation is continued for about 6 hours at a maximum temperature of 143 C until the aniline content of the distillate is less than 0.20 04. The vacuum is then lifted by introducing nitrogen.
A solution of 49.6 parts of di: ethyl 2,5-dianiline-3,6-dihydroterephthalate in Dowtherm A (85% of theory, based on the diethyl succinate used) is obtained.
To carry out the process according to the invention, this solution is heated to 250 to 257 ° C. for 1 hour with stirring, a nitrogen atmosphere being maintained in the reaction vessel. The batch is cooled to almost room temperature and thinned with about 100 parts of denatured ethyl alcohol. The product is then filtered off and washed with ethyl alcohol. This gives 34 parts of dihydroquinacridone which is light yellow-brown in color and which is insoluble in aqueous alkali, alcohol, acetone and benzene.
It is slightly soluble in a mixture of strong aqueous alkali and alcohol and precipitates when diluted. It dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid to form a yellowish, bite-brownish solution, from which it precipitates unchanged when diluted. It is stable without melting or decomposition at temperatures of up to about 400 C, with the exception of the tendency to oxidize to red quin acridone when heated in air.
