<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Explosive shell The subject of the invention is an explosive shell. This shell may, for example, comprise, behind the explosive charge, a pyrotechnic composition, which will be referred to below as a fuse, burning during at least part of the course of the shell while releasing gases towards the rear. to give rise either to a luminous effect (tracer shell) or to a self-propelling effect.
The object of the invention is above all to provide a shell which exhibits greater explosive power than hitherto.
It seems opportune to remember that high explosive shells essentially comprise, on the one hand, a body whose weight constitutes the major part of the overall weight of the shell, and, on the other hand, an explosive charge that we obviously have interest, in order to increase the destructive power of said shell, to provide as large as possible, taking into account the shape, the external dimensions and the overall weight of the aforesaid shell, all parameters which are generally fixed in advance as a function of ballistic considerations.
However, for shells of this type known to date, we were concerned, while taking advantage of the role of ballast played by the shell body, to make the latter participate actively in the effect. final destroyer, either by generation of fragments resulting from fragmentation of the shell body under the effect of the explosion of the charge, or by the intervention of a perforating point forming an integral part of the aforesaid shell body.
However, the advantage resulting from this active role of the shell body was obtained only at the expense of the destructive effect due to the explosive charge itself.
Indeed, for an explosive shell of external shape, dimensions and overall weight given, the volume of housing available for the explosive charge, and therefore the weight of the latter, were reduced for the following reasons.
In the case of a burst shell, a shell body with a relatively thick side wall had to be provided in the area reserved for housing the explosive charge.
The obligation to make the shell include certain accessory elements (rocket, tracer, etc.) made it difficult to give the explosive charge the volume that one would have wished, or the concern to obtain a good effect. breath prevented giving the shell body increased elongation.
And, in the case of an armor-piercing explosive shell, it was necessary to occupy part of the determined overall volume of the shell by the perforating point of the shell body, the aforesaid part thus being lost from the point of view of housing of the explosive charge.
In addition, in both cases, the special arrangement of the shell body generated constraints that did not allow to obtain, for a given weight of the explosive charge, the maximum blast effect.
The object of the invention is precisely to remedy the drawbacks mentioned above and which are inherent in the multiple role played by the shell body.
It makes it possible to increase the efficiency of the blast effect of the explosive charge of the shell, and also to increase the weight of said charge for a shell of given shape, dimensions and overall weight: these advantages being obtained by renouncing to make the shell body participate in a specific and specific way in the final destructive effect.
The explosive shell according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises a charge: explosive concentrated in a thin-walled cap, ogival in shape, attached to the front of a massive body essentially playing the role of ballast and constituting the rear part of the shell.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.
The single figure in this drawing represents, in axial section, an explosive tracer shell.
The shell shown comprises a solid body 1 essentially playing the role of ballast and constituting the rear part of the shell including its base and on the front of which is attached a cap 2, with a thin wall, in which a load is concentrated. explosive 3, the aforesaid cap 2 having the shape of a truncated warhead and being suitable for receiving, at its front end, a tip fuse 4 equipped with a detonator 5 immersed in the aforesaid explosive charge 3.
In the shell body 1 is formed an axial housing 6, open towards the rear and in which is placed a pyrotechnic tracing composition 7, the firing of which takes place when the shot is fired by means of a pellet. ignition 8 located behind the aforesaid composition and held in place by a crimped washer 9.
The shell body 1 is preferably formed in the form of a one-piece element produced by machining a blank, preferably of steel, which can be obtained, for example by extrusion, the aforesaid shell body 1 having at least a peripheral groove in which is disposed a guide belt 10.
At the front of the shell body is formed a truncated cone-shaped recess, which makes it possible to increase the volume available for the explosive charge 3 while increasing the height of overlap of the aforesaid shell body 1 by the cap 2.
Said cap 2 can advantageously be made of sheet steel, for example by a simple stamping operation.
With an explosive shell such as that which has just been described, it is possible, while respecting an external shape, determined dimensions and overall weight, to significantly increase the relative importance of the explosive charge 3, with respect to the case of a conventional high explosive shell satisfying the same determined conditions.
In addition, the concentration of the explosive charge 3 in an advanced zone in the form of a mass, the cross sections of which are greater and the height smaller than in the case of a thin and elongated charge, makes it possible to obtain a improved blast effect, all other things being equal.
As an example and only to fix ideas, we can indicate that in a shell with a caliber of 30 mm. with a tracer, it was possible, thanks to the arrangement described, to accommodate 43 grams of explosive while a shell of the same caliber, of the same external shape and of the same overall weight, without a tracer, established in the conventional form of a hollow shell body in which the explosive charge is housed contained only an explosive charge of 41 grams.
Thus, in this particular case, the arrangement described made it possible, despite the addition of a tracer to the shell, not only not to reduce the weight of the explosive charge, but even to increase the weight in question and, moreover, to increase the blast efficiency of said load.
Finally, it should be noted that an explosive shell established as has just been said lends itself to a new particularly simple, safe and economical loading process.
In this regard, it is interesting to note that the conventional method of loading a shell from the front by compression through the threaded orifice intended to receive the fuze no longer makes it possible to obtain a satisfactory homogeneity. of the charge when the diameter of the aforesaid orifice drops below a certain proportion of the maximum internal diameter of the housing of the aforesaid charge, which could also happen in the case of a shell established as described.
The new process consists, first of all, before mounting the cover 2 on the shell body. 1, in accommodating the explosive charge 3 in said cap by compressing it to a pressure slightly less than that necessary for said charge to perfectly match the internal shape of the aforesaid cap, this first operation preferably being carried out using a punch having the same shape as the front part with a frustoconical recess of the shell body 1,
and the cap 2 being supported on the outside by a matrix of suitable shape provided at its base with a stud reproducing the shape of the housing of the detonator.
and, then, in driving the cap 2 off the aforesaid shell body with sufficient force to generate, in the explosive charge 3, the final pressure required so that said charge, while further reducing its volume, perfectly matches all of the walls of its housing, a necessary condition for safety when starting the shot, the aforesaid cap always being placed in the pin die for this last operation.
