<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Device for electromagnetic maintenance of the oscillating movement of the regulating member of a timepiece The present invention relates to an electromagnetic device for maintaining the oscillating movement of the regulating member of a timepiece, comprising a magnetic flux generator and a coil, one of which is integral in movement with the regulating member, the other being fixed,
so that the interaction of the magnetic flux and the current passing through the coil gives rise to an electromagnetic force intended to maintain the oscillating movement of said regulating member.
We currently know. two types of electromagnetic maintenance devices: electrical contact devices and transistor devices.
Contact devices, despite certain advantages that they have, for example with regard to the form of current pulses, have all the drawbacks inherent in the use of contacts. This is the reason why transistor devices are preferred to them. However, the latter have fairly significant drawbacks, due essentially to the transistor itself.
Thus, as we know, it is necessary to have two coils, one for driving the regulator member, the other for driving the transistor, connected, respectively, in the collector-emitter circuit and the base-transmitter circuit. On the other hand, given the importance of the reverse current of a germanium transistor, therefore the importance it plays in the consumption of energy, it is preferable to use a silicon transistor whose reverse current is much lower.
However, the latter requires that the control voltage applied to the base exceeds 0.4 to 0.5 volts, voltage which must be fully supplied by the control coil, a bias which would increase consumption due to the quiescent current not entering not taken into account. Furthermore, given the exponential characteristic of the emitter-base diode, the amplification factor of such a transistor is much smaller for weak signals and varies with temperature.
It follows, therefore, that the weaker the control signal, therefore the smaller the amplitude of the oscillations of the regulator member, the more the current in the drive coil is reduced, so that the regulator member will not be driven below a certain oscillation angle. This angle is generally much greater than the angle above which the balance of a mechanical watch no longer oscillates. To overcome these drawbacks ,. several transistors are used, which obviously does not simplify the device in question.
The invention proposes to eliminate the aforementioned drawbacks, both of devices of one and of the other of the two types, by using bistable elements with special characteristics.
As is known, special bistable elements have been developed in recent years. elements exhibiting negative resistance for certain values of the supply voltage (see, for example, Swiss Patent No. 335368).
The device according to the invention differs from known devices by the fact that said coil is connected in series in an electrical circuit comprising a direct voltage source (11) and a bistable element having a negative resistance for certain values of the voltage of said source,
said coil being arranged so that the subtraction of the voltage which is induced therein by variation of the flux passing through it, from the voltage of said source, causes said element to tilt from its stable state determined by its maximum resistance to its stable state
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
determined by its minimum resistance,
adding the voltage induced in the coil to that of the source causing the element to tilt from its stable state determined by its minimum resistance to its stable state determined by its maximum resistance.
The appended drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, an embodiment and a variant of the device which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 in. is a plan view with the electrical connection diagram.
Fig. 2 shows an electrical connection diagram of a variant.
Fig. 3 shows some electrical characteristics of the device.
Fig. 4 shows a variant of a detail of the device.
The electromagnetic maintenance device comprises a regulating member constituted, in this case, by a circular balance 1, made integral, by means of a cross member 2, with a pin 3, the two ends of which are intended to pivot in bearings, not shown, provided in the fixed part of the timepiece donkey.
A spiral spring 4 attached, on the one hand, to the axis 3 and, on the other hand, to said fixed part, is intended to maintain the balance 1 in an oscillating movement. On a flattened part 1 ,, of the perimeter of the balance 1, are fixed, for example by gluing, three permanent magnets 7, 8 and 9.
These three magnets are polarized along an axis parallel to the axis 3 of the balance and this so that the direction of the flux passing through the middle magnet 8 is opposite to the direction of the flux passing through the two outer magnets 7 and 9.
A coil 10, in a wafer form, is arranged in a plane perpendicular to the axis 3, therefore parallel to the balance 1, and this so that, during the oscillating movement of the latter, the magnets 7 to 9 pass under the coil. The coil 10 is fixed and is placed so that its position with respect to the magnets 7 to 9 is that shown in FIG. 1 when the balance 1 is in its rest or equilibrium position, a position for which the action of the spring 4 is zero.
The coil 10 is connected, on the one hand, to the negative pole of a DC voltage source 11 and, on the other hand, to the collector C of a transistor T of the pnp type, the emitter E of which is connected to the mass. As can be seen, the transistor T is a special transistor, which comprises in addition to a base contact b1, negatively biased by a DC voltage source 12, a second base contact b2 located between the emitter E and a groove 13 surrounding the latter, and positively polarized by means of a source 14, via a variable high resistance 15.
This transistor T is able to operate as a bistable element thanks to its characteristic VI, (collector voltage - collector current) which includes a negative part, namely a part for which the current I is inversely proportional to the voltage V. This means that the transistor T has, for certain values of the voltage applied to the collector C, a negative resistance.
Such a transistor, the characteristic VI of which is shown in FIG. 3 by ODF, is described in detail in Swiss Patent No 335368. Thanks to the groove 13 it is possible to vary, by means of the space charge area due to the potential difference between the collector C and the base B, the resistance of the part of the base electrically connecting the contact b1 to the emitter-base junction and to the contact b2 and, consequently, the current flowing between the emitter E and the contact b1,
due to the polarization of the latter. This current will therefore become practically zero when the space charge zone extends to the groove 13.
The operation of transistor T will emerge clearly from the description of the operation of the entire device which will be given below. However, before giving this description, it is necessary to give some details on the conditions which must be fulfilled when dimensioning the various members constituting the device.
The voltage of the source 11, applied to the collector C, through the load resistance that constitutes the coil 10, must be at least greater than the voltage necessary for the space load zone, due to the potential difference between the collector C and the base B, is extended to the groove 13 and, consequently, the current path between the contact b1, on the one hand, and the contact b:
, and the transmitter E, on the other hand, is cut. The transistor control current will thus be cut and the transistor blocked.
It should be noted that, in the off state of transistor T, there is no consumption of electrical energy.
On the other hand, the resistance of the coil 10 must be provided so that the characteristic V-I thereof, represented by the straight line G H in FIG. 3, has substantially the same slope as the negative part D F of the characteristic of the transistor.
Finally, the magnetic and electrical circuits constituted, respectively, by the magnets 7 to 9 and the coil 10, must be provided so that, for a very small angle of oscillation of the balance, the voltage induced in the coil is greater than the voltage difference existing between the voltage of the source 11 and the voltage of the collector for which said space charge zone reaches the groove 13.
It should also be noted that the slope of the negative part F of the characteristic of the transistor is obtained by choosing a suitable voltage of the source 12. The positive polarization of the contact b2 makes it possible to vary the value of the voltage which must be applied to the collector. so that the space load zone extends to the groove 13.
The device described and shown operates as follows
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Suppose that the balance 1 is in one of its two extreme positions, for example in its extreme right position, relative to the reader of the drawing. Since the flux of magnets 7 to 9 does not pass through coil 10, no voltage is induced therein. The voltage applied to the collector C is therefore equal to the voltage of the source 11 and the transistor T is blocked. The electrical working point is therefore at G (fig. 3). Under the action of the spring 4, the balance will perform a return movement towards its position shown in the drawing, therefore towards the coil 10.
When the latter is crossed by the magnetic flux, the variation of the latter, caused by the passage of the magnets carried by the balance, will result in an alternating voltage Vi induced in the coil (see fig. 3). The voltage Vi is therefore superimposed on the voltage of the source 11. Thus, the positive half-wave of the voltage Vi being superimposed on the negative voltage of the source, will cause the reduction of the voltage V, applied to the collector and the displacement of the point working from G to F.
When the voltage V, will reach a value lower than that corresponding to the point F, the transistor will switch to its other stable state, therefore to the conduction state and the working point will be located on the O D part of the characteristic. The oscillogram of the current I ,, represented on the right part of FIG. 3, shows the variation of the current I, as a function of a positive half-wave of the voltage Vi (at the bottom of fig. 3).
The coil 10 will therefore be traversed by the current I ,, which will give rise to the creation of a so-called Laplace force, resulting from the presence of a conductor traversed by a current in a magnetic field, which will cause the balance wheel in the sense of its movement.
The change in polarity of the induced voltage V ;, therefore the change from positive half-wave to negative half-wave, will result in the superposition of the induced negative voltage Vi on the voltage of the source 11 and, consequently, the increase of the negative voltage V, applied to the collector. As soon as voltage V, exceeds the value corresponding to point D, the transistor will switch to point L and will be blocked again. At the end of the negative alternation, the working point will again be in G.
A new positive half-wave will result in the transistor switching into the conduction state, hence a new pulse of current I ,, in the coil, etc.
Thanks to the shape of the magnetic circuits 7 to 9 and electric 10 (described in detail in Swiss patent No. 342526), the induced voltage Vi in the latter, during a half-oscillation of the balance 1, is composed of two periods , one on each side of the rest position of the balance, so that the coil 10 will receive two current pulses, one just before and the other after said rest position.
Thus, the balance will receive two mechanical impulses, one just before and the other after its passage through its rest position, by a force which is tangential to it, and will continue its movement to its extreme left position, hence it will return under the action of spring 4. Now, it is easy to see that the same cycle will be repeated during the reverse movement of the balance, that is to say that it will receive two new impulses in the direction of its movement. movement, and so on.
The balance will therefore receive at each half-period of its oscillating movement two mechanical pulses in the direction of the latter.
It is easy to see, from the foregoing, that the device according to the invention has great advantages over known devices.
First of all, it eliminates the need for the control coil essential in known devices. Indeed, as explained above, the coil 10 fulfills the role of both the drive coil of the balance and that of the control coil of the transistor T.
It should be noted that, instead of providing a single coil as in the example described above, one could provide two coils 10, and 10b connected in series and arranged so that, during the oscillating movement of the balance 1, the magnets 7 to 9 can pass between them (see fig. 4). This arrangement makes it possible to increase the number of turns of the coil, which are traversed by the maximum flow.
An important advantage of the device described consists in the fact that, in order to obtain the tilting of the transistor T, it is no longer necessary to have available signals exceeding 0.4 to 0.5 volts. Indeed, it suffices to have a signal capable of moving the working point of the transistor from G to F or from FI to D (see fig. 3), so that the transistor switches. The transistor can therefore be made of silicon. On the other hand, since the space charge zone is not sensitive to the variation in temperature, the sensitivity of the transistor is not influenced by the latter.
This thermal stability also makes it possible to choose the distance GF (fig. 3) which is very small compared to the induced voltage Vi and, consequently, to reduce as much as possible the angle of oscillation of the balance for which the electromagnetic maintenance. would not take place.
Finally, the current I ,, namely the current flowing through the drive coil, does not depend on the amplification factor of the transistor T, namely on the value of the control signal. Thanks to the internal feedback of the transistor, practically the same shape of the drive current pulse is obtained, both for very weak signals and for stronger signals.
It goes without saying that the present invention is not limited to the embodiment of the device described and shown. Thus, as a variant, the transistor T could be replaced by any other bistable element having a negative resistance for certain values of the supply voltage. One could, for example, use the same transistor as that shown in FIG. 1, but which would lack contact b2.
It is evident that in this case
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the value of the voltage of the collector for which the emitter-base current is practically zero, would be chosen once and for all.
The transistor T could be replaced by a transistor comprising, instead of the groove 13, other means. allowing to vary within extended limits, by means of the space charge zone due to the potential difference between the collector and the base, the electrical resistance of the part of the base electrically connecting the contact b1 to the emitter junction based.
Fig. 2 shows an electrical diagram of a variant of the device in which the transistor T is replaced by another bistable element. As can be seen, the latter is constituted by a conventional transistor Tl whose collector C1 is connected, via the coil 10, to the negative pole of the source 11, the positive pole of the latter being at the ground as well as the emitter El of the transistor Tl.
The contact b1 of the transistor T1 is connected to a contact 20 with which one of the ends of a fieldistor FI is provided, the contact 21 which the fieldistor F1 comprises at its other end being connected to the negative pole of the source 12. The zone Z of the fieldistor Fl is connected to the collector Cl.
It is easy to see that the emitter-base current intended to control the transistor is itself controlled by a variable resistor that constitutes the fieldistor FI, this resistance being controlled by the voltage applied to the collector C1, with which it increases and vice versa. . It is obvious that the voltage of the source 11 must be at least greater than the voltage necessary for the space charge zone of the zone Z to extend to the surface of the fieldistor so as to cut off the current flowing therein. .
It is obvious that the magnetic flux generator, constituted in the example given by magnets 7 to 9, could be provided in any other way. It is the same with regard to the arrangement of the magnetic parts and of the coil; the latter could be mobile and the magnetic parts fixed.
Finally, the transistors T and Tl could be of the n-p-n type, which, obviously, would require the inversion of the polarities of the different voltage sources.
