Method and device for the transesterification of esters of aliphatic carboxylic acids and polyhydric alcohols The invention relates to a method and a device for the transesterification of esters of aliphatic carboxylic acids and polyvalent alcohols, such as glycerides and in particular fatty oils and fats,
it can be an intermolecular as well as an intramolecular exchange.
Alkali or alkaline earth alcoholates dissolved in alcohol are known as catalysts for such transesterifications. The reaction temperature of the transesterification with such catalysts is comparatively low and is z. B. between 15 and 150. At the higher temperatures of the range mentioned, the reaction time is generally less than one hour.
However, the use of alkali or alkaline earth metal alcoholates dissolved in alcohol as a catalyst has the disadvantage that fatty acid esters of the alcohol in which the catalyst has been dissolved are formed during the transesterification, and that at the same time an equivalent amount of partial esters of the polyhydric alcohol of the starting material is formed. The formation of said esters of the alcohol used as solvent, which are usually volatile and, if edible oils are to be produced, volatilize ver during the subsequent deodorization, leads to considerable losses. The formation of partial stars can also be undesirable.
The method according to the invention now enables the aforementioned disadvantages to be overcome using simple means.
According to the invention, a solution of an alkali or alkaline earth metal in a volatile solvent, such as. B. alcohol, expediently immediately before the esterification is carried out, subjected to spray drying and the alcoholate thus obtained is used as a catalyst for the transesterification. In this way, the solvent is almost completely removed from the catalyst solution and the alcoholate is kept in the form of a powder.
Advantageous results can be achieved in particular if a spray plate is used for the spray drying, which is arranged in a suitable manner in a preferably under vacuum the reaction vessel above the liquid level of the ester introduced into the reaction vessel. In this way, spray-dried catalyst particles having a particle size in the range between 10 and 50 μ can be obtained.
The esters, e.g. B. a fat one. Oil or fat, as well as the alcoholic catalyst solution, can be drawn into the reaction vessel using a vacuum.
Preferably the ester, e.g. B. the oil or fat, dried before transesterification. Such drying can be carried out with the same spray dryer that is used for drying the catalyst solution.
A device suitable for carrying out the method according to the invention is shown in the drawing.
1 schematically shows an apparatus for carrying out the method according to the invention.
Fig. 2 shows a spray plate for the spray drying device.
In FIG. 1, 2 denotes the reaction vessel, which is provided over part of its height with a heating jacket 10, on which a supply line 11 provided with a valve for the heating medium and two discharge lines 12 and also provided with valves 13 are provided.
The reaction vessel 2 is also equipped with a feed line 1 for the liquid ester which is provided with a valve and ends in an outlet nozzle 1 a protruding into the upper part of the reaction vessel 2. The reaction vessel 2 can be provided with a valve line 9, for. B. with a vacuum pump (not shown), are placed under vacuum. In the reaction vessel 2 there is also a rotatable shaft 5 which carries a spray plate 3 on its upper part and a stirrer 6 on its lower part.
On the supply line 1 there is a branch l b, which leads via a valve to a storage tank 8 for the catalyst solution.
Example A mixture of 20% by weight of cottonseed oil, 40% by weight of coconut oil, 30% by weight of hardened whale fish oil and 10% by weight of hardened palm oil was heated to approximately 120% and then sucked in by means of vacuum via the supply line 1 into the reaction vessel 2 and supplied to the spray plate 3 via the nozzle 1a. As can be seen from FIG. 2, the spray plate 3 is provided with corrugations 4 and has a serrated edge. The spray plate 3 arranged on the shaft 5 rotates at 800 to 1000 revolutions per minute.
The liquid oil mixture supplied to the spray plate 3 is finely sprayed in this way and dried as a result of the vacuum applied.
After the oil mixture had reached a certain height (liquid level 7) in the reaction vessel 2, the oil supply was turned off and the valve in the branch line 1b was opened, so that the catalyst solution consisting of a 20% sodium methylate solution in alcohol - in an amount of 0.2o / r sodium methylate, calculated on the amount of oil to be treated - flowed from the storage vessel 8 onto the spray plate 3.
As a result, the catalyst solution is finely sprayed, and the solvent alcohol is practically completely removed by the vacuum applied to the reaction vessel 2 before the powdery catalyst obtained comes into contact with the heated oil in the reaction vessel 2.
The catalyst was intimately mixed with the oil to be treated by the stirrer 6 rotating at the same speed as the spray plate 3. It is important to ensure that the catalyst does not stick to the walls of the reaction vessel 2 and accumulate there. This can be prevented by stirring the oil so vigorously that the wall parts of the reaction vessel 2 onto which the catalyst is sprayed are constantly or intermittently overflowing with oil.
The use of a spray plate 3 represents a preferred embodiment of the invention. However, other spray drying devices, such as. B. spray nozzles, for spray drying the catalyst solution and for drying the ester can be used.
