Self-regulating piston pump, in particular for fuel injection The invention relates to a self-regulating piston pump, in particular for fuel injection in internal combustion engines, this expression designating both combustion engines and progressive combustion engines (diesel engines and the like), a pump in which the piston divides the corresponding cylinder into a pressure chamber and a regulating chamber and is actuated mechanically in the direction which contracts the compression chamber (stroke of forward) and by an elastic return device in the other direction (return stroke),
the pressure chamber comprising a supply duct and a discharge duct for the useful flow of the pump and the regulation chamber comprising an inlet duct and an outlet duct provided with means suitable for braking and / or delaying the 'flow of the liquid passing through it such that from a predetermined drive speed and as this speed increases,
the return stroke and consequently the subsequent stroke of the piston are shortened and the volume of the liquid delivered per cycle through the discharge duct of the pressure chamber decreases.
The pump according to the invention is characterized in that the outlet duct of the regulation chamber is connected to the supply duct of the pressure chamber and comprises means suitable for preventing the backflow of the liquid from the pressure chamber. during the forward stroke of the piston, the inlet duct of the regulation chamber being connected to a source of the liquid to be delivered.
The fia. 1, 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings each show, in schematic section, an exemplary embodiment of the pump according to the invention. The piston 1 is placed in a cylinder 2 which it separates into two compartments 2a (pressure chamber) and 2b (regulation chamber) and this piston is alternately subjected, on the one hand to the action of mechanical means specific to move it positively in the direction that contracts the pressure chamber (forward stroke, upwards in the figures), the piston thus pushing the fuel contained in compartment 2a to the outside, and on the other hand to the 'action of a return device suitable for moving the piston in the opposite direction to the previous one (return stroke, towards.
the bottom of the figures), the piston thus returning the liquid contained in the compartment 2b through an orifice 3 suitable for braking and / or delaying the return of the piston.
The compartment 2a is connected to the injector or to the injectors by a channel 4 advantageously provided with a non-return valve 5 and the return device is constituted by a helical spring 6 working in compression and housed in the compartment 2a.
The aforesaid mechanical means are advantageously constituted by a cam 7 mounted on a shaft 8 (FIG. 3) driven at a speed proportional to that of the motor and between this cam and the udder is interposed a return constituted by a pusher 9, guided in translation in a bore 10 passing through the bottom of the compartment 2b, and by a slide 11 held by a spring 12 in contact with the cam 7, this slide comprising a roller 13.
The pusher 9 can either be integral with the piston 1 (fig. 1), or be constituted by a separate element resting on the bottom of the piston 1 (fig. 2 and 3). In any case, the clearance between the pusher 9 and the bore 10 is chosen to be small enough, taking into account the length of the bore 10 and the pressure in the compartment 2b, so that no damage occurs. leak there.
Of course, one could replace the return represented by any other equivalent mechanical return slow, and for example replace the slide 11 with an angled lever mounted on a pivot pin at its elbow and supported by one end on the cam 7 and the other on pusher 9.
As regards the orifice 3, it is placed on a transfer channel 14 connecting the compartment 2b to the compartment 2a and serving to supply the latter with fuel, the compartment 2b itself being supplied by a channel 15, provided with a non-return valve 16, connected to an appropriate source such as a low pressure pump called a foot pump.
The diameter of the piston being the same on both sides, it can be seen that the volume which it displaces in compartment 2a is greater than that which it displaces in compartment 2b due to the presence, in the latter, of the pusher. 9 (fig. 1). Consequently, whatever the stroke of the piston 1, the compartment 2a is always incompletely filled.
To remedy this drawback, it is advantageous to provide the piston 1, on the side opposite the push-button 9, with an appendix 17 (fig. 2 and 3) having the same section as the push-button 9 and moving in a bore 18 preferably open to the outside by a vent 19. Bien.ente.ndu, the fitting of the appendix 17 in its bore 18 is such that it prevents any leakage to the outside of the compartment 2a.
To limit the active part of the delivery stroke of the piston 1, the latter is provided with a groove 20 communicating, by means of a longitudinal channel 21, with the compartment 2a, this groove coming into communication with a channel discharge 22 before piston 1 reaches the end of its delivery stroke.
It is possible, according to a first solution, to arrange the orifice 3 so that it slows down, without delaying its start, the return movement which the piston performs, under the action of the spring 6, and for this purpose give said orifice a restricted section (fig. 1 and 2). Since such an orifice is generally permanently open, it is necessary to provide means to prevent the back flow, through channel 14, of the fuel contained in compartment 2a, these means being constituted by a non-return valve 23.
As shown in fig. 1 and 2, the restricted orifice 3 can be limited by a needle screw 24 which can either be manually adjusted once and for all, or be controlled automatically according to the speed of the engine by an appropriate regulator such as a centrifugal regulator or a hydraulic regulator responsive to a pressure varying with said speed.
The operation of the pumps shown in fig. 1 and 2 is as follows. Suppose that the piston 1 is initially in the low position shown in these figures. The cam 7 lifts the roller 13 and the slide 11 which itself lifts, by the intermediary of the pusher 9, the piston 1. The latter compresses the spring 6 by expelling the liquid contained in the compartment 2cc towards the or the injectors through the valve 5 (the valve 23 being closed by pressure).
During this time, the compartment 2b which increases in volume is filled with the fuel which arrives through the valve 16. The injection stops when the groove 20 comes into communication with the discharge channel 22, which causes the pressure to drop. in the compartment 2a, via the channel 21. The piston 1 rises a little further, the groove 20 remains in communication with the channel 22.
Then piston 1 stops and goes back down. At this time, the fuel is transferred from compartment 2b to compartment 2a via channel 14, passing through restricted orifice 3.
This restricted orifice delays the descent of the piston 1 which is pushed back by the spring 6 at a speed lower than that of the slide 11. The latter, at least from a certain speed of the pump, has time to reach its speed. low point and back up before piston 1 has come to rest on its lower stop. The slide 11 therefore meets the pous evening 9 in the process of going down, which stops the transfer by the channel. 14 and gives the start to a new injec tion.
The higher the speed of the pump, the higher the pusher 9 is encountered in its downward stroke. by the slide 11 and shorter is the subsequent delivery stroke of the piston 1. The pump is therefore self-regulating.
The regulation effect described above can be combined with that due to the variation in the cross section of the orifice 3, variation determined, as said above, by a regulator slaved to the speed of the engine.
According to a second solution (fig. 3), the orifice 3 is arranged so that it delays the start of the return movement of the piston 1 relative to the moment when the slide 11 ceases to act on the latter by through push-button 9.
For this purpose, the orifice 3 can be made by making the groove 25a of a slide 25 which is loaded with each delivery stroke of the piston 1 against the return means constituted by the channel 14. a spring 26 and the return of which, due to the action of the return means, is delayed by the fact that it then discharges liquid through a clamp 27. The cocking of this drawer can be carried out by means Mechanics similar to those which control the delivery stroke of piston 1.
For this purpose, as shown in fig. 3, it is possible to wedge on the shaft 8 a second cam 28 acting on the spool 25 by means of a sliding pusher 29. The timing liquid acting on the piston 25 can be introduced into a cylinder 30, via a channel 31, under a piston 32 integral with the slide 25, and expelled by this piston by means of a channel 33 on which the aforesaid constriction 27 is provided. The overall operation of the pump of FIG. 3 is similar to that of the pumps of FIGS. 1 and 2.
However, instead of the piston 1 initiating its downward movement at the same time as the slide 11, as in the case of FIGS. 1 and 2, the piston 1 here begins its downward movement only once the groove 25a of the spool 25 begins to ensure the continuity of the channel 14.
