The invention relates to a self-regulating reciprocating pump as a function of speed, in particular for injecting fuel into internal combustion engines, the expression internal combustion engines encompassing both internal combustion engines as engines operating by the Diesel process or a similar process.
Pumps of this type are already known in which the regulation of the flow rate of the pump as a function of the speed is obtained by varying the supply to the pump as a function of the speed. In these pumps, the start of the effective delivery of the pump is all the more delayed as the flow rate of the pump decreases. In the case of an injection pump for an engine, where the adjustment factor is the speed of the engine, the advance of the injection is thus reduced for low engine loads.
The object of the present invention is to make such self-regulating pumps of the type in question that the start of their delivery is independent of the size of the flow rate per delivery stroke.
The self-regulating reciprocating pump according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises a first piston driven with a speed proportional to the speed constituting the adjustment factor and providing hydraulically, during its own forward stroke, the stroke of the flow and discharge of a second piston which causes the flow to the outside, out of the pump chamber to which the supply and discharge pipes of the pump are connected, means being provided to ensure the filling the space between the first piston and the second piston from the start of the outward stroke of said first piston,
and that the return stroke of the second piston is caused by the pressure with which the liquid to be delivered by the pump enters the pump chamber through the supply duct of this chamber, and that finally means are provided capable of reducing, at least from the moment a given speed is reached and as a function of the speed, the quantity of liquid entering said pump chamber between the moment when the return stroke of the second piston begins and the moment when he starts a new race to go.
An embodiment of the pump according to the invention is shown by the drawing, by way of example. The single figure in this drawing shows, schematically and in axial section, the essential parts of a pump intended for injecting fuel into an engine.
The pump is made to include two pistons 1 and 2, among which the piston 1 serves to drive the piston 2 hydraulically during the delivery stroke of the latter, which constitutes the pump piston proper. The piston 1 is itself driven, to accomplish its back and forth strokes in its cylinder 3 by a cam 4 with a speed proportional to that of the engine on which the pump is mounted to ensure fuel injection. in this motor, speed which constitutes the adjustment factor.
The cam, as is usual, positively produces the forward stroke of the piston 1, while a counter spring 5 causes the return stroke of said piston.
A supply duct 6 is made to open into cylinder 3 at a location such as this cylinder that this duct is unmasked only when piston 1 is in its bottom dead center (see the position shown in the drawing), while the mouth of this duct in cylinder 3 is masked - after the start of the outward stroke (upstroke) of piston 1. The liquid, brought by the supply duct into cylinder 3 is a liquid capable of ensuring the hydraulic coupling between pistons 1 and 2.
In the case of a fuel injection pump, it is possible, at least in certain cases, to use, as hydraulic liquid, the fuel itself which must be delivered by the pump.
As regards the piston 2, it works in the pump cylinder 7 and forms, with this cylinder, the actual pump space. In this pump space open, on the one hand, a supply duct 8 bringing the fuel to be delivered by the pump and, on the other hand, a discharge duct 9 advantageously provided with a check valve 10. L the lower end of the cylinder 7 and the upper end of the cylinder 3 communicate constantly with each other, for example by an opening 11 provided in a partition between these two cylinders, this partition constituting the support for a spring relatively weak 12 which acts on the piston 2 in the direction in which it completes its delivery stroke.
In addition, there is provided, on the cylinder 7, an exhaust duct 13 which is unmasked by the underside of the piston 2 when the latter fulfills, during the forward stroke of the piston 1, its own discharge stroke. under the effect of the hydraulic drive of the liquid enclosed in the gap between the two pistons 1 and 2. As soon as the piston 2 unmasks the conduit 13, its delivery stroke stops.
Of course, means are provided, which will be discussed more explicitly below which, during the delivery stroke of the piston 2, close the supply duct 8 so that the fuel filling the cylinder 7 is discharged during this stroke at through the delivery pipe 9 to the injector or injectors to the supply of which the injection pump in question is used.
The return stroke (down stroke) of piston 2 is ensured - stroke which takes place during the return stroke of drive piston 1 and / or during the period when this drive piston is in its bottom dead center for which it is releasing the pipe 6 - by the pressure of the fuel which is born, through the pipe 8, in the pump space formed by the upper part of the cylinder 7.
This pressure must therefore be greater than the pressure of the hydraulic fluid which is supplied by the pipe 6 and even greater than the sum of the pressure of this hydraulic fluid and the force exerted, by the spring 12, on the piston 2. The spring 12 could however be replaced by the simple friction of the piston 2 in the cylinder 7.
In addition, through the supply duct 6, a sufficient quantity of hydraulic fluid is brought in so that the gap between the pistons 1 and 2 is completely filled with this liquid when the piston 1 begins its forward stroke. having to ensure the delivery stroke of the piston 2. Finally, means are provided capable of reducing, -ëdepending on-speed, the quantity of fuel which fills the pump chamber provided in cylinder 7, in the interval between the start of the return stroke of piston 2 and the start of the consecutive upward stroke of piston 1.
With regard to these latter means, one of their particularly effective embodiments and giving them great precision is represented by the figure according to which these means are capable of delaying the start of the return movement of the piston 2 relative to the start of the movement. return movement of piston 1.
These means comprise a slide 14 or a similar control member interposed in the supply duct 8 and controlled in such a way that this slide closes the supply duct 8 during the forward movement of the piston 1 but does not open it. , with a certain delay, only after the start of the return stroke of the piston 1, this delay being preferably adjustable. For this purpose, the slide 14 is placed in a cylinder 15 in which this slide is movable against a spring 16, this spring having a tendency to apply the slide 14 against a shoulder 17. When the slide 14 is applied. that against this shoulder, it opens, through its groove 18, the conduit 8.
In addition, the end of the lower part of the cylinder 15 is connected by a duct 19 and via a check valve 20 interposed in a duct 21 to which the duct 19 is connected, inside a cylinder 22 in which works a piston 23 which is advantageously integral with the piston 1 and constitutes, with the latter, a stepped piston. In this case, the return spring 5 can be housed inside the cylinder 22 and rest, by one of its ends, against the piston 23, while its other end rests against the frame of the pump.
A supply duct 24 is opened into cylinder 22, which is unmasked by piston 23 when the latter is in its bottom dead center (see figure), so that cylinder 22 can be filled with liquid. This liquid may be the same as that which is supplied, via line 6, into cylinder 3, so that the pipes 4 and 6 can be connected to one and the same liquid supply pipe 25.
In addition, there is interposed in the duct 21 - downstream of the check valve 20 and the right where the duct 19 is connected to the duct 21 a constriction 26, adjustable by means of a needle screw. 27, and advantageously also an obtu rator member 28 having the shape of a groove slide which brings it to me 21 as long as the piston 23 completes its outward stroke with the piston.
To ensure this control, the spool 28 is moved, so as to close the duct 21 by the pressure prevailing in the cylinder 22 during the outward stroke of the piston 23, this pressure being brought through a duct 29 in the cylinder 30 in which is housed the drawer 28, tan say that this drawer is returned to the position for which it opens the conduit 21 (position shown in the figure) by means of a counter spring 31. Consequently, when the piston 23 performs its outward stroke (upward stroke), it simultaneously causes the closure of conduits 8 and 21.
The rise of the spool 14 stops when the lower face of this cylinder releases a notch 32 provided on the section 8a of the duct 8 which is located upstream of the spool 14, this notch allowing the excess of the liquid delivered by the piston 23 to escape without this excess being able to cause the opening of the duct 8. The opening of the notch 32 therefore determines the upper position of the drawer 14. In this upper position of the drawer 14, the lower edge of the groove 18 is at a certain distance above duct 8. Spool 14 remains in its upper position until the pistons 1 and 23 start their return stroke.
At this time, the drawer 28 opens the conduit 21 and the drawer 14 can begin its downward movement. However, since the lower edge of the groove 18 is at some distance above the duct 8, the opening of the latter does not take place immediately when the pistons 1 and 23 start their stroke. back. A certain lapse of time passes before the opening of the conduit 8 begins, this lapse of time being due to the braking which is exerted on the spool 14 by the liquid which the spool 14 must push back during its downward stroke and which must escape, due to the closing of the non-return valve 20, through the throttle 26.
A delay is thus obtained in the start of the supply to cylinder 7 relative to the start of the return stroke of piston 1, a delay which can be adjusted by a variation in the free section of the constriction 26 and / or by a variation compression of the spring 16 using means not shown in the drawing.
The operation of the pump which has just been described is as follows Since at the start of the upward stroke of the piston 1, the interval between the latter and the pump 2 is completely filled with liquid, the stroke of delivery of piston 2 begins when piston 1 masks supply duct 6. This delivery stroke continues until piston 2 clears discharge duct 13, spring 12 being too weak to ensure a continuation the delivery stroke (upstroke) of piston 2.
During this delivery stroke, the spool 14 keeps the supply duct 8 closed, so that the liquid filling the upper compartment (pump chamber) of the cylinder 7 is discharged into the duct 9 during said upward stroke of the piston 2.
When the piston 1 begins its return stroke (down stroke), the spool 14 still keeps the supply duct 8 closed, so that the piston 2 remains in its upper position in which it is held by the spring 12 or simply by its friction in cylinder 7. It is only when the spool 14, during its slow descent, opens the supply duct 8 that the pressurized fuel, which thus arrives in the cylinder 7, pushes back piston 2 downwards while filling the pump space of cylinder 7.
Up to a determined driving speed of the piston 1, the fuel arriving through the conduit 8 has time, despite the delay in opening this conduit, to push the cylinder 2 back by a maximum amount, determined or either by the compression of the spring 12, or else by a stop, before the piston 1 begins its new outward stroke causing the new delivery stroke of the piston 2.
Consequently, the quantity of fuel delivered by the delivery stroke of the piston 2 into the delivery duct 9 is maximum. If, on the other hand, the driving speed of piston 1, as a result of acceleration of the engine on which the injection pump in question is mounted, rises above the aforesaid determined speed, piston 1 starts its delivery strokes before the fuel, arriving through the supply duct 8, has had time to make the piston 2 complete its maximum return stroke.
The return strokes of this pis ton will be all the shorter as the dragging speed of piston 1 rises above the determined speed mentioned above. In other words, the volume of fuel, entering through line 8 into the pump chamber which is located in cylinder 7 above piston 2, is all the smaller as the driving speed of piston 1 rises, given that this volume is proportional to the time between the opening of the duct 8 by the spool 14 and the start of the delivery stroke of piston 2, starting coinciding with the start of the outward stroke of piston 1.
Self-regulation is therefore obtained without modifying the moment at which the injection begins because, whatever the position of the piston 2 in the cylinder 7 at the moment when the piston 1 begins its forward stroke, the piston 2 is always immediately driven in the direction of its discharge stroke, since the gap between pistons 1 and 2 is still filled with liquid at the moment when piston 1 begins its discharge stroke and closes supply duct 6.
If, for example, at the moment of the aforesaid determined speed at which autoregulation begins, the time during which the supply duct 8 is open is the '/ io of the time which elapses between the start of the race return and the start of the forward stroke of piston 1, an increase in speed of 10.1 / o is sufficient to achieve a complete cancellation of the quantity of fuel delivered by the pump and, consequently, to the cut off the injection.
The fineness of the regulation of the pump could be further improved by controlling the needle screw 27, which adjusts the section of the throttle 26, by a speed regulator so that the section - de, - Tétranglement automatically decreases -and the speed increases.
According to a variant not shown in the figure, the delay which the tempered slide 14 brings to the opening of the supply duct 8 is replaced by a braking obtained for example by a throttling inserted in the duct 8 and of which the section could be fixed or could also be variable according to the speed, this restriction slowing down the arrival of fuel through the supply duct 8.
According to another variant, the speed of the return stroke of the piston 2 could be slowed down by pre-seeing, on the lower compartment of the cylinder 7, a discharge duct comprising a constriction, preferably adjustable as a function of the speed, by interposing in this discharge duct, a shutter member which closes it when the piston 1 completes its outward stroke and by mounting, in the communication opening 11, between the cylinders 3 and 7, a non-return valve which allows the liquid flow only in the direction from cylinder 3 to cylinder 7.
Of course, in the latter case, the interior of cylinder 3 must be filled with liquid, arriving through conduit 6, at the moment when piston 1 begins its outward stroke so that this liquid, with that which fills the lower part of cylinder 7 ensures the immediate coupling of pistons 1 and 2 in the direction of their outward or delivery stroke, from the start of the outward stroke of piston 1.
It is obvious that one or the other of these two variants makes it possible to obtain the desired effect which consists in obtaining self-regulation of the quantity of fuel admitted into the pump chamber of cylinder 7 as a function of the speed. without modifying the start of delivery and, consequently, the advance of injection when the quantities of fuel injected are reduced.
