Magnetic Printing Apparatus The present invention relates to a magnetic printing apparatus. This is characterized by a rotatably arranged type carrier, which carries on its surface a number of arranged along a winding, made of magnetizable material be standing types, by means of rotating the type carrier about its axis, by means of the simultaneous displacement of the type carrier longitudinally its axis, by a rotatable drum made of magnetizable material, which is arranged next to the type carrier so that the types move past the surface of the drum when the type carrier rotates,
by a controllable device for generating a magnetic flux passing through the types and the drum surface, so that selected types can be magnetically mapped onto this surface, and by means of transferring the magnetically mapped types to a substrate to be printed.
An exemplary embodiment of the subject matter of the invention is shown schematically in the drawing.
Fig. 1 shows a drum made of magnetizable material and a type carrier.
Fig.2 is the development of the surface of the type carrier.
Fig. 3 is a schematic side view of some main parts of the apparatus.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the type carrier and the mechanism for rotating the same.
Fig. 5 is a section along line 5-5 in Fig. 4 on a smaller scale.
In Fig. 1, the type carrier 10 has the shape of a helix with one turn, and the types to be printed, e.g. B. letters are reproduced on it. These letters are arranged along the mentioned helix and consist of magnetizable Ma material. The remaining part of the type carrier 10 can also be made of magnetizable material if the letters themselves are raised and protrude so far that they come closer to the magnetizable drum 12 than the other parts of the type carrier 10.
All possible types can be accommodated on this cylinder, but the alphabet A to Z is shown for illustration purposes.
In normal operation of the apparatus, the type carrier 10 rotates about its axis, and since the stationary rod 11 on which it moves is threaded, the type carrier 10 moves to the right as it rotates. With each complete rotation of the type carrier 10, the same moves along the rod 11 to the right by an amount equal to the distance between two parallel planes which are perpendicular to the axis of the rod 11 and pass through the letters A and Z.
As a result, there are certain discrete points on the surface of the drum 12 at which the letters can be magnetically mapped on this upper surface, and each letter of the alphabet passes each such point, while the type carrier 10 from one end of the rod 11 to its other End is moved. In order to carry out the magnetic transmission, it is therefore only necessary to send a magnetic flux from the type carrier 10 into the magnetizable drum 12 at the right moment during the movement of the type carrier 10 along the rod 11.
In this way, magnetic configurations are formed on the various points of the drum 12 in accordance with the information to be printed. The drum 12 is rotated incrementally, i. H. after each horizontal line on the drum is magnetically printed, the drum 12 is advanced one step. If the drum 12 is moved step by step from time to time, then the magnetizable material passes a scattering box 22, the particles of which stick to the drum, corresponding to the shape of the letters which are magnetically printed on the drum 12 . When the printed parts of the drum 12 come away from the scattering can, they move to the printing mechanism 23-26.
Here the paper 23 is fed from a spool 24 to another spool 25. It is moved by means of a pressure roller 26, which presses the paper tightly against the surface of the drum 12, and when the drum 12 rotates, it presses the magnetic particles that are attached to it onto the paper 23. This creates a kind of pressure, which can be read with the human eye.
As shown in FIG. 3, the type carrier 10 approaches the drum 12 very closely. The magnetic flux is guided in the latter by means of the curved plate 18, which is located close to the edge of the type carrier 10. The plate 18 is connected to a yoke 19 through a core 20, and a coil 21 is wound around the core 20. The yoke 19 presents the drum 12 with a large surface, specifically in the form of two of its surfaces which are far from the point at which the type carrier 10 is seated closest to the drum 12. As a result, the generated density of the magnetic flux sent from the yoke 19 into the drum 12 or absorbed from it is so small that it does not degrade the operation of the device.
In order to rotate the type carrier 10, two rods 13 and 14 are firmly connected to the two wheels 15 and 16. The latter rotate freely around the rod 11. A wheel 16 is a gear which is in engagement with the gear 17, the latter being driven by a synchronous motor or servo motor 27 on. The magnetic or paper tape 28 has two tracks, one of which has signals for regulating the rotary movement of the gear wheel 17 and therefore for regulating the angular speed of the type carrier 10; the other track supplies signals for controlling the excitation of the coil 21. From acquisition heads 29 and 30 pick up the signals from these two tracks and feed these signals to the motor 27 and the coil 21, respectively.
As a result, the type carrier 10 is rotated around the rod 11 at the desired angular speed. If any of the letters on the type carrier 10 passes one of the aforementioned discrete points (where magnetically printing is possible), the pickup head 30 is either energized or not, depending on whether the particular letter is to be magnetically printed at that point. When a particular letter is to be printed at a particular point, the appropriate signal is picked up from tape 28 by head 30 and fed to spool 21. This causes a large, pulsed magnetic flux to enter the drum 12 through the type carrier.
In this way, a magnetic figure is recorded at the desired point on the drum, which corresponds to the letter to be printed. The type carrier 10 then moves to the next diskre th point on the drum; each letter of the type carrier 10 then passes this next point, and if there is to be printed, the head 30 gives the necessary current pulses at the exact Win angle position of the drum 12 to perform the printing process. This continues until the type carrier 10 has printed a complete line on the drum.
The helical arrangement of the letters on the type carrier 10 cooperates with the rotation of the type carrier and its lateral displacement in one direction. The type carrier 10 can be made to return in any known manner to its starting position on the left side of the apparatus, without thereby exceeding the scope of the present invention; Alternatively, the motor 27 can be designed in such a way that its direction of rotation is reversed when the type carrier 10 reaches the rightmost position of its path, with the result that the type carrier 10 is driven back by the motor 27. In this case, the signals on the belt 28 can be arranged in such a way that a printing process takes place while the type carrier 10 is returning to its starting position.
As shown in Fig. 5, the rods 13 and 14 are fixedly connected at their left end to the gear 16 and at their right end to the gear 15.
