Universal joint The invention relates to a torque-transmitting universal joint of the type with constant speed ratio, in which the torque is transmitted by several balls, which are placed in meridional grooves in an at least partially spherical inner part on a drive element and in a hollow, at least partially spherical outer part on the other drive element of the universal joint are arranged, and in which a cage is provided for holding the balls between said two parts.
In the case of joints of the type mentioned above, it is essential that the points of contact between the balls and their raceways must under all circumstances lie in a plane which contains the junction of the universal joint and also bisects the angle between the axes of the drive elements. In previously known joints of the type mentioned, this requirement was met by means for controlling the position of the ball cage according to the variable angle of the axes of the drive elements. In a well-known joint construction, the necessary control is effected by a pin or a lever, which in one of the Drive elements is guided and has a spherical seat in the end of the other drive element,
wherein said pin or the lever at a central point in its length has a spherical seat connection with a continuation of the ball cage in order to adjust the latter according to the angle between the drive elements. It was also proposed to create a joint of the type mentioned, in which the ball tracks are grooves with the same radius as the ball used, around the longitudinal curvatures of the inner and outer running grooves in each case concentrically to points arranged at a distance from one another lie on the axis of the PTO shaft.
The aim of the present invention is to provide an improved joint of the type mentioned, in which the required setting of the level containing the balls is effected in a satisfactory manner, without it being necessary to provide control or steering devices for the ball cage .
The universal joint according to the invention with a constant speed ratio, in which the torque is transmitted by several balls, which are arranged in meridional grooves in an at least partially spherical inner part on one drive element and in a hollow, at least partially spherical outer part on the other drive element of the universal joint, and at which has a cage for holding the balls between the two parts, is characterized by meridian grooves of such a cross-section,
that they form limited contact surfaces with the balls lying in a path inward from the meridional groove edges in order to achieve a suitable pressure angle, the bottoms of the said grooves are out of contact with the ball or are completely absent and the formation of the grooves is such that the converging dividing tracks intersect and the groove flank contact lines of the inner and outer raceways, when the drive elements of the joint are aligned, converge at an angle that is more than twice as large as the friction angle for the balls and raceways,
so that a force derived from the transmission torque for setting the balls in the neces sary position to the angle between the axes of the drive elements is created. In the accompanying drawing an example embodiment of the subject invention is shown.
1 shows a longitudinal section of a universal joint according to the invention, FIG. 2 shows a cross section through the joint along line XX in FIG. 1, FIG. 3 shows a schematic end view of the inner and outer grooves with the balls located therein, the geometry the career ellipses, the matching and touching can be seen, Fig. 4, 5 and 6 geometric representations showing the way in which the centers are arranged, from which the cooperating border tracks of the inner and outer grooves are formed.
In the Ausfüh shown in Figs. 1 and 2 approximately form of said universal joint, a rotational torque-transmitting joint of a type with a constant speed ratio is provided, which inner and outer raceway parts 1 and 2 has, which are formed on the shafts 3 and 4 or on the latter are appropriate. The inner part 2 has a partially spherical surface 5 and end surfaces 6 and 7 which are perpendicular to its shaft axis.
The outer part 1 is hollow and has a partially spherical, inner surface 8 which is centered at the node 9; Fer ner this outer part contains meridian ball running grooves 10 and forms a whole with its shaft 3. The intersection 9 of the two shaft axes represents the center or junction of the joint. The running grooves 10 of the outer part preferably end at one end in clearances 11, which the grinding of the grooves facilitate and also support the insertion of the balls into the grooves.
In an existing space between the spherical surfaces of the inner and outer parts of the joint 12, a cage 13 is arranged which has slots or openings for receiving and holding the torque-transmitting balls 14 on one side with the inner grooves 15 and on the other side with the outer running grooves 10 come into contact.
The cage has partially spherical, outer and inner, concentric surfaces which co-operate with .einer annular surface 8 of partially spherical shape on the outer part 1 and a partially spherical upper surface 5 on the inner part 2, the spherical center of the cage being the center - or node 9 of the joint.
The cross-sections of the meridional grooves are milled or ground slightly smaller than half of an ellipse, the common main axis of which is radial to the joint. This can be seen from Figure 3, where the outer raceway 10 and the inner raceway 15 for a better overview because of radially separated Darge provides. The common main axis is shown at 18, the center of the sphere being at 19. The smaller axis 20 for the inner groove 15 lies above the center point of the sphere, while the smaller axis 21 for the outer groove 10 is arranged below the corresponding center point.
The evolution of the outer career ellipse is shown at 22, while the evolution of the inner career ellipse is shown at 23. A suitable pressure angle P1 (Fig. 4) for the balls is predetermined, and in the present example it is assumed that this angle is 45, but this pressure angle can be changed to suit particular circumstances.
The expression pressure angle refers to the angle between the line going through the ball and raceways and a line that goes through the center of the ball and runs radially to the ball pitch circle when this circle is projected into the plane containing the node of the joint and also halves the angle between said axes. The main circular arcs of the ellipse are struck at the point of contact with the ball from the center points 24 and 25 (Fig. 3), which are on the pressure line extending under 45 at a point where the pressure line is tangent to the evolute of the ellipse.
The radius of the arc (rco or rci) is larger than the radius
EMI0002.0035
of the sphere by as much as the desired match should be. The design of these cross-sectional grooves is such that the main arcs are flanking raceways within which the ball contacts lie, while the smaller arcs of the ellipse are arranged on the bottoms of the running grooves and are out of contact with the balls. With certain constructions, the bottom parts of the grooves can also be omitted.
The ratio of the correspondence between the radius of the track and the radius of the ball can expediently be 1.02, that is, at the point of contact the radius of the track is 1.02 times as large as the radius of the ball. In practice, this number can be changed in order to maintain the condition that the close contact surfaces of the balls do not come too close together or protrude beyond the edges of the running grooves.
The balls and grooves are proportioned so that when the joint is subjected to torque, there is a small amount of play on the sides facing away from the ball contacts. The contact surfaces of the balls. on the flanks of the raceways take the form of a small ellipse 27, exaggerated in FIG. 3, under pressure, and the path of these contacts is always inward of the raceway edges, so that the pressure developed does not cause any displacement of the material at the groove edges.
Instead of being elliptical, the raceways can also have other shapes and, for example, be circular arc-shaped or include parts that have a flat cross-section in order to see small, as described above, be arranged ball contact surfaces.
To exert a controlling or directing force on the balls and the ball cage, which adjusts the balls precisely with respect to the angle between the shafts, when the latter are either directed or inclined at a small angle, it is necessary that the together The effective dividing paths of the inner and outer paths cross at an angle with the shafts aligned and the groove flank contact lines (or momentary tangents) converge, which angle is more than twice as large as the angle of friction of the balls and raceways. The angle of friction is determined based on experience and depends on the type of materials from which balls and raceways are made.
For the purpose of this embodiment it is assumed that the angle of friction is 5 ", in which case the steering force required to align the balls is achieved when the angle of intersection of the partitions (or convergence) is 11" 28 '. To meet the above-mentioned conditions for the crossing of cooperating dividing paths, it is necessary to determine the respective center points of which the cooperating tracks of the inner and outer grooves are each formed, and this can be done graphically with reference to FIG , 5 and 6 can be explained in the following manner.
After determining a suitable pressure angle of 45, for example, a cone 28 is drawn with the center 19 of the sphere as the apex of the same and with an apex angle twice the size of the pressure angle, the base 29 (ac) of the cone runs horizontally and has the center or node 9 of the joint in its center. The cone 28 is referred to below as a pressure angle cone. This cone is then projected in the direction of arrow E at the pressure angle, that is, at an angle of 45 "on a surface so that its base appears as an ellipse 30 which runs through the center of the sphere, the center of the Joint appears in the middle of the ellipse.
In order to achieve the required control or steering of the balls, their points of contact with the inner and outer raceways must come to lie on the inclined straight lines 31 and 32, which extend through the center of the sphere, as can be seen from the projection diagram in FIG. Furthermore, the steering force acting on the ball and cage arrangement must always be greater than the load passing through the center of the ball, multiplied by the coefficient of friction.
If the coefficient of friction is 5, as assumed above, then the angle 5144 'represents the angle a) which is half the required angle (angle of convergence) between the above-mentioned oblique lines that run through the two raceway points of contact of the ball which intersect the projected cone base circle 30 at the two points shown at ai and a ".
To generate the raceways, it is then necessary to determine the polar coordinates of points ai and a "in the plane containing the base circle of the pressure angle cone and in a plane normal to it, which contains the center of the joint and the ball. A suitable method is available in determining an auxiliary angle, SZ, through which the geometric location of the dividing path must rotate around the base circle of the pressure angle cone, as follows:
EMI0003.0024
The constant K denotes the ratio between the rolling circle radius and the ball diameter.
If it is assumed that the pressure angle PA = 45; d = 1; K = 1.65 and approx. = 51144 ', this results in an auxiliary angle, SZ of 8 "7'. In this way, the lateral displacement of the tracks and thus the position of the two points ai and a" at the Base circle as shown in Fig. 4 can be determined; these points form the generating geometric locations of the inner and outer career paths to achieve the necessary career convergence.
Referring to Fig. 5, a part of the base circle with the points a1 and a ″ lying thereon is shown at 30; from these points the circles of the dividing paths 33 and 34 of the inner and outer raceways are drawn, these dividing paths as shown The true angle of career convergence, which is 2 co, is indicated at 35 in FIG.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the contact angle cone of Figure 4 and shows a cage window 36 in which the ball is arranged. The diameter of the ball is indicated at 37 and the ball contact circle at 38. The inner raceway flank is designated with 33 and the outer raceway flank with 34.
It should be noted that as a result of the raceway convergence, a drive torque given in the direction of the arrow T generates a component of the force T acting on the cage and thus inevitably steers the balls and the cage into the correct position, which is the position which the Angle between the shafts of the joint halved.
From the foregoing it can be seen that the distance between the generating geometric Oer- tern a1 and a ″ and the center of the sphere is the same for all shaft angles, and that from these centers points through the center of the sphere struck circular arcs (39 and 40, Fig. 5) represent the dividing paths of the inner and outer raceways and intersect at the specific angle as described above The above numerical values are of course only given as examples and can be changed according to circumstances.
The intersecting convergence angle 2 w of the converging web contact lines should not, however, be significantly larger than the angle which is necessary with aligned shafts to achieve the desired steering force on the balls and the cage.
Experience leads to a limit value of 2.4 times the angle of friction, whereby the fact must be taken into account that the steering force also increases with an increase in the shaft angularity, and that with shaft inclinations that make an angle of less than P 0 </ B> - exceed 1111, an additional steering force is theoretically no longer necessary.
From FIG. 4 it can be seen that the contact points 31 a and 31 b of the balls with the inner and outer track grooves lie outside the plane 31 c by the distance sin co , which the
EMI0004.0014
Contains intersection of the joint axes and that the angle enclosed by lines 31 and 32 is 31d 180 -2 c).
The arrangement described shows a constant speed possessing, torque transmitting universal joint, in which the ball and cage cohesion is inevitably controlled or steered by a force which is derived from the torque below the required angle at all times, and especially when the shafts are aligned or inclined at a small angle.
Furthermore, through the use of ball track grooves with the configuration of the cross-sectional area described, the contact area of the ball with its raceways can be regulated, and by suitable design, the mean pressure in the ball contact area can be set to any desired value. While the pressure angle of the balls and raceways can be changed, another benefit of using a pressure angle of approximately 45 degrees is that the inner ball raceway becomes self-centering within limits so that the load is evenly distributed across the balls. Six balls are provided in a suitable arrangement.
It should also be noted that the relationship between rolling and sliding of the balls can be determined by choosing the pressure angle.
