Covered electrode for electric arc welding The invention relates to an electrode for electric arc welding with a core made of iron or steel and with a sheath whose diameter is 1.5 to 2 times the core wire diameter and whose slag-forming components are largely made of calcium carbonate , optionally together with barium and / or magnesium carbonate, and fluorspar and optionally cryolite. The electrodes of this so-called basic type produce, as is known, a weld metal of excellent quality and have therefore found great application - especially after it succeeded in considerably improving their welding properties by adding a certain amount of iron powder to the casing.
The iron powder addition is usually chosen so that the electrode yields about 112 to 115%. Yield is the ratio of the weight of the deposited welding metal to the weight of the molten core wire.
The basic electrodes, however, still leave something to be desired in terms of ease of welding. When welding in other welding positions than the horizontal, in particular with vertical welding, they have a certain tendency to short-circuit or freeze on the workpiece and therefore require a well-trained welder. Furthermore, in terms of their ability to be welded with alternating current, they are decidedly behind most other electrode types. Under certain conditions, there may also be a tendency to form pores.
The invention has the purpose of improving the basic electrodes and consists in the fact that the envelope contains both strontium carbonate and zirconium oxide, preferably in the form of zircon sand (mineral zirconium silicate), in an amount which for each of these components between 2 and 1511 / a of the total weight of the non-metallic constituents of the casing. The given weight ratio of zirconium oxide corresponds to a content of zircon sand of preferably 3 to 20 percent.
The invention results in a substantial improvement in the welding properties without impairing the high quality of the weld metal deposited with the basic electrodes. On the contrary, the results now available show a certain improvement in the notched impact strength of the weld metal. The electrodes can be welded with alternating current without difficulty and, in the case of vertical welding, place less demands on the dexterity of the welder than the known basic type of electrodes.
The improvement achieved by the invention is likely to be related in part to an observed reduction in the size of the droplets passing over during welding. There is also an increased tendency to crater formation in the envelope, which is attributable to the zirconium oxide or zirconium sand.
In addition to the components already mentioned, the sheath can also contain other additives known or suitable in basic electrodes, such as ferro-manganese, ferro-silicon and other ferro-alloys, manganese dioxide or manganese ore and titanium dioxide. When using titanium dioxide, its content should not be higher than 51 / o of the weight of the non-metallic part of the casing and preferably not higher than 3 to 3.5 / o of the weight mentioned.
As an example of a slag-forming composition according to the invention, the following can be given:
EMI0002.0000
The weight ratio limestone / fluorspar can be between 2: 1 and 1: 1 and is preferably chosen closer to the former value. The. The specified slag-forming composition is mixed, for example, with 35 parts by weight of iron powder with or without the addition of ferro-silicon and / or ferro-manganese. Water glass solution, preferably potassium water glass, can be added as a binder in the amount required for the mass to be pressable. The mass is z.
