The electrode holder shown in fig. 1 com takes a body B in which is mounted a guide tube G in which passes a consumable wire electrode E. The guide tube G is supplied with electric welding current by a supply conductor L provided with an insulating handle H. A nozzle N serving to direct the gas surrounds the lower part of the guide tube G, this nozzle being concentric with the guide tube, extending beyond the latter and terminating in a discharge port O.
The magnetic flux F is conveyed by the gas stream through the electrode holder towards the end of the electrode E in the vicinity of the arc A established between the electrode E and the workpiece W. At this point, the magnetic flux F leaves the vehicle gas to adhere to the electrode E and the gas S which carries it protects the arc A and the weld metal WM.
The electrode holder is arranged to cause the powder-laden gas to descend along the guide tube G and outside the latter towards the discharge orifice O. In the embodiments shown., The middle part of the guide tube G is surrounded by an annular distribution chamber 10 which is supplied with gas charged with magnetic powder via a supply pipe 12.
Underneath the chamber 10, the electrode holder is provided with longitudinal distribution passages 14 which, from the chamber 10, are equally spaced around the guide tube G and on the outside thereof and protrude from this tube to end near. from the discharge port O (fig. 1).
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, the passages 14 are formed by semicircular grooves formed in the upper part of the inner wall of the nozzle N. The lower ends of the passages 14 end below the lower end of the guide tube G, forming deflectors 15 serving to direct the magnetic powder inwards against the electrode wire coming out of the guide tube G,
so as to make it adhere to the electrode wire and thus introduce it into the weld, while the vehicle gas moves all around leaving the discharge orifice O to protect the arc and the weld.
An insulating sleeve 20, which isolates the powder conveyed by the gas from the guide tube under tension G, surrounds the guide tube inside the annular chamber 10 and parts of the passages 14 located above the end. lower guide tube. A protective screen 16 is placed against the insulating sleeve 20 so as to protect the latter from the abrasive action of the powder conveyed by the gas and from the radiant heat coming from the zone of the arc.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, part of the body B is formed by a member 18 having a passage in which the guide tube G is wedged by a clamping sleeve 19. This member 18 passes through two insulating washers 21 and 22. The lower part of the 'member 18 passes through the passage of part C of the body B and the supply conductor L. A locking nut 23 screwed onto the threaded upper part of the member 18 clamps the supply conductor L against the washer 22, and the washer 21 between the head of the member 18 and an annular shoulder 24 provided in part C.
Another part of the body B is formed by a powder receiver 25 in which the annular chamber 10 is formed and to which the gas supply pipe 12 is connected. The receiver 25 is provided with a threaded upper part which is screwed on. in the lower part of the passage of part C of the body. The nut 16 has an outer flange extending over the upper part of the receiver 25, which is clamped against a washer 27 isolating the protective screen from the head of the member 18.
The nozzle N has a threaded head which screws into the lower part of the passage of the receiver 25. Between the grooves 14, the nozzle tightly encloses the protective screen 16 to separate the longitudinal passages intended for the gas conveying the powder.
The embodiment shown in FIG. 3 com takes a body B in which is mounted a guide tube G in which passes an electrode wire E. The guide tube G is supplied with welding electric current by a supply conductor L for seen from an insulating handle H. The lower part of the guide tube G is surrounded by a gas-directing nozzle N, concentric with the guide tube and extending beyond the latter to terminate in a discharge port O.
The electrode holder comprises a sleeve 20 of insulating material, for example of a gas-charged phenolic material. The electrode holder is arranged to let down the gas charged with powder along the insulating sleeve 20 and outside the latter towards the discharge orifice O. In the embodiment shown in FIG. 3, the upper part of the sleeve 20 is surrounded by an annular inlet chamber 10, supplied with gas charged with powder by a supply pipe 12 housed in the handle H.
The upper part of the sleeve 20 located in the chamber 10 is surrounded by an elastic ring 17, which constitutes a protective screen against the abrasive action of the powder conveyed by the gas. Underneath the chamber 10, the sleeve 20 is provided with longitudinal passages 14 for the powder-laden gas, which leave from the chamber 10, are also spaced around the sleeve 20 and are arranged outside the latter. The passages 14 are formed by semicircular grooves formed in the outer surface of the sleeve 20 and cooperating with the wall of the passage formed in the body B to form separate passages, preferably six in number.
The N nozzle for directing the gas is attached to part C of the body. B by means of an insulating plastic sleeve 11 screwed onto this part, the fitting in turn being screwed onto the sleeve 11. The fitting contains an annular distribution chamber 28 surrounding the lower part of the sleeve. 20. The passages 14 end with deflectors 13 serving to direct the powder outwards, into the distribution chamber 28.
Below the distribution chamber 28, the nozzle is provided with longitudinal distribution passages 29, starting from the distribution chamber 28, equally spaced around the guide tube and outside the latter and extending beyond this tube to end close to the discharge orifice O. The passages 29 are formed by semi-circular grooves formed in the inner wall of. the nozzle N and are preferably four in number.
The entry of the powder conveyed by the gas into the chamber 28 through the spaced passages 14 causing an outward deflection, and its exit from the chamber 28 through a different number of passages 29 causing an inward deflection, prevents gas from passing without entraining the powder and ensures uniform powder distribution.
The lower ends of the passages 29 terminate below the lower end of the guide tube G with inclined baffles 15 serving to direct the powder inwards against the electrode wire exiting the guide tube G for the powder. cause to adhere to the wire electrode and to be entrained in the weld, while the carrier gas moves around the electrode exiting the discharge port O to protect the arc and the weld.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 3, part of the body B is formed by a clamping piece 30, having a passage in which the guide tube is wedged by a clamping sleeve 31. The guide tube G is supplied with welding wire by a flexible pipe 32. connected to the guide tube G by a coupling 33.
