Apparatus for dissipating electrostatic charges from the surfaces of poorly conductive materials with the aid of a stabilized electrical glow discharge. The present invention relates to an apparatus for dissipating electrostatic charges from the surfaces of poorly conductive materials with the aid of a stabilized electrical glow discharge. It is not only suitable for unloading strand-like or strip-shaped materials that are moved past the device, but also for objects that are difficult or impossible to move.
It is known that the ions, which are usually generated in a stabilized electrical low or high frequency glow or spray discharge, serve to discharge the material surfaces. It has already been proposed to stretch one or more earthed spray wires along an insulating rod and to install a Tesla transformer in the insulating rod that delivers the required high voltage, the secondary winding of which is earthed at one end and connected to a live counter electrode carried by the insulating rod at the other.
In these devices, a chopper or changeover switch arranged outside the insulating rod was previously used to generate the high-frequency input voltage of the Tesla transformer. However, these devices which supply the required high-frequency voltage have switching parts which are subject to wear, are difficult to adjust and require a relatively large amount of space. As such, the high-frequency generating device could also have suitable electron tubes instead of a chopper or switch. However, this would hardly reduce the space required, circuit complexity and susceptibility to failure.
In contrast, the apparatus according to the invention, which has an insulating rod carrying at least one earthed spray wire and containing a live counterelectrode, is characterized in that the device used to generate a pulsating high voltage has a transistor assembled with a high voltage transformer to form a unit, this unit in the insulating rod carrying the electrodes is installed.
An embodiment of the subject of the invention is shown schematically in the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing, 1 is the insulating rod made of electrically insulating plastic, the cross section of which is suitably round or rectangular. A retaining ring 2 is located on both rod ends (only one is visible); one or more tensioning or shielding wires 3 and one or more spray wires 4 are stretched parallel to the insulating rod 1 between the two retaining rings 2. The spray wire or wires 4 are grounded. In the insulating rod 1, a counter electrode 5 is arranged, which is expediently pushed into the rod 1 or cast into it. The device generating the pulsating high voltage is installed in a recess provided at one end of the insulating rod 1.
This device has a high-voltage transformer 6, the secondary winding of which is earthed at one end and connected to the counter electrode 5 at the other end. In the circuit .der the two-part primary winding of the high-voltage transformer 6, a transistor 7 is connected. As can be seen in the drawing, the transistor 7, which is assembled to form a unit with the transformer 6, is also housed completely sunk in the insulating rod 1; the arrangement is expediently such that said unit 6, 7 can be easily replaced.
The direct current used to feed the transistor 7 in the example shown

is generated by a rectifier 8, which can be connected to the alternating current network via a switch 9. The rectifier 8, which is constructed separately from the electrode part 1-7, is connected to the electrode part by a normal low-voltage cable 10 with two supply wires.
During operation of the apparatus described, the pulsating high voltage generated in the unit 6, 7 generates a spray discharge stabilized by the material of the insulating rod 1 on the spray wire or wires, which in turn generates the discharge of the material carried past the apparatus or brought into its vicinity necessary ions generated.
Since no high voltage has to be fed to the electrode part 1-7, a normal, simple cable 10 can be used, and any power-reducing influence due to the cable attenuation is not significant. On the contrary, an HF interference voltage is still attenuated by the direct current supply cable, so that the interference protection group that is usually to be provided can be simplified compared to apparatus with high voltage supply to the electrode part. Construction, manufacture and handling of the apparatus are simple. The ionization strength can be changed in a simple manner by changing the supplied DC voltage.
