<tb> 0,10 <SEP> 5,1 <SEP> 4/15 <SEP> 1,4 <SEP> 344 Die vorstehenden Versuchsergebnisse kennzeich nen die folgenden überlegenen Eigenschaften der sul- fitierten Gerbextrakte: die sulfitierten Produkte be wirken eine mit dem Sulfitierungsgrad ansteigende nicht unerhebliche Wassereinsparung; ebenfalls be wirken sie Festigkeitssteigerungen von erheblichem Ausmass, welche mit steigender Anwendungsmenge sogar noch zunehmen;
Process for improving the quality properties of mortar or concrete As an additive for mortar or concrete, only relatively few have proven practically effective among the numerous substances proposed, which are curiously predominantly natural or derived products such. B. lignin derivatives, resin acids, humic acids, fatty acids or fatty acid derivatives.
In the older literature, tannin (tannic acid) is occasionally mentioned as an additive that retards setting or increases the early strength of mortar or concrete. Tannin is generally known as a tanning agent and is used for a wide variety of purposes, especially in the pharmaceutical field, but is far too expensive as a tanning agent for leather and is otherwise less suitable and therefore uncommon. Tannin has also had no practical significance for mortar or concrete.
The so-called vegetable tanning extracts obtainable by aqueous leaching of plant parts rich in tanning substances, from the large number of which are the most important mimosa, quebracho, chestnut, valonea, knoppern, gambir, catechu, sumach, tizera, are primarily used as tanning agents for leather production -, maletto, mangrove, dividivi,
Spruce and fir extract should be mentioned. Extracts of this type, as extracts from the bark and / or wood of plants rich in tanning substances, still contain considerable proportions of non-tanning agents, the presence of which is also important for leather tanning. There is thus an essential difference between tanning material and tanning extract. The chemical nature of the tannins contained in the tanning extracts differs from case to case and is still largely unexplained; the usability for tanning is accordingly different.
The vegetable tanning extracts are not to be confused with the ligninsulphonic acid-based products, which do not contain any vegetable tannins and have completely different chemical names, such as cellulose extract, sulphite cellulose extract, spruce wood extract, lignin extract or other fancy names Nature, whose usability as a plasticizer for mortar or concrete is well known.
Nothing has been known about the use of vegetable tanning extracts as additives for mortar or concrete, especially since the publication of scientific test results (see Kleinlogel: Influences on concrete) has shown that a low content of tanning extract, be it in the Mixing water, be it in liquid coming into contact with the finished concrete, has a very harmful and destructive effect on concrete.
In contrast, detailed investigations by the inventor have shown that tanning extracts of various kinds are added to the mixing water in an amount of <B> 0.05% </B> (dry substance based on cement), as a rule not causing any reduction in strength, provided that the acidity the naturally acidic extracts are eliminated by adding very little alkali. Likewise, additions of 0.1% do not yet have a harmful effect. Only with added amounts of <B> 0.15% </B> tanning extract showed greater loss of strength, which also increased by leaps and bounds.
The setting-retarding effects of vegetable tanning extracts are still modest at <B> 0.05% </B>, but at 0.1% they almost double the setting time, which with 0.15% can increase to three times the amount, although there are gradual differences depending on the type of tanning extract.
Almost all vegetable tanning extracts have a noticeable foaming power in dilute acidic and alkaline solutions, but usually only the acidic solutions have a noticeable air-entraining effect, which is related to the strength-reducing effects in the absence of alkali. Overall, this tendency to form air entrainments decreases, strangely enough, with increasing amounts added.
According to the present findings, vegetable tanning extracts can be used in very small added amounts as a retarder. However, any improvement in the quality properties of mortar or concrete cannot be achieved in this way.
As has now been found, the quality properties of mortar or concrete are noticeably improved if the mortar or concrete, or their constituents, are added before or during processing, which tanning extracts are previously added to a dissolving, Molecule-reducing and sulfonating treatment using soluble sulfites and / or bisulfites have been subjected.
Such a pretreatment of extract used for tanning purposes is known per se as sulfitation, but is used there only very occasionally as weak sulfitation for the purpose of improving the poor solubility of a few types of extract, in particular that of quebracho extract. Because the tanning effect can easily be lost, the work must be done very carefully.
In the case of such weak sulfitation, a maximum of 3-5% sulfite and / or bisulfite, calculated on the dry extract substance, is used, where the reduction in size of the molecules and sulfonation effects are limited to a small amount.
As has been established, such weakly vegetable tanning extracts have only slightly increased effects as additives for mortar or concrete. Surprisingly, the concrete-improving effectiveness of the vegetable tanning extracts increases roughly proportionally with the degree of sulfitation and the corresponding molecular breakdown, as well as with increasing sulfonation, and it reaches its optimum with the most heavily treated products.
Preferred application according to the invention are therefore those products which have been sulfited with an expenditure of 10-60% sulfite and / or bisulfite with the greatest possible molecular size reduction and sulfonation.
Of course, compliance with suitable reaction conditions is also necessary in order to achieve the desired products. For example, in suitable open containers with a stirrer, the suitably more concentrated reaction mixtures can be converted at boiling temperature with constant evaporation of water so that reaction temperatures of up to 110 can be achieved. In this case, the implementation time, which is comparatively 20-30 hours required at 80, is already considerably shortened. A conversion in a closed pressure vessel, which is roughly analogous to the sulphite pulp production process, leads much more quickly to the goal.
However, the products obtained over a shorter period of time do not have to have the better properties.
The type of sulphiting agent to be used depends on the type of tanning extract to be treated, for example on its degree of acidity. If the acidity is too high, when treated with pure bisulfite in an open reaction vessel, sulfurous acid escapes, which can be avoided by using or also using sulfite. In many cases bisulphite is the more effective means, but in some cases sulphite as well, in other cases sulphite-bisulphite mixtures are most suitable.
You can also gradually add one and the other agent or switch from one to the other, for example, with strongly acidic tannin extract, start with sulfite and gradually switch to bisulfite. Such a treatment ending with bisulfite leads in many cases to particularly effective products.
An increase in the degree of sulfitation and the effectiveness can sometimes also result from an initial or intermediate treatment with caustic alkalis or alkali carbonates. The type of metals bonded to sulfite or bisulfite, such as sodium, potassium or alkaline earth metal, is also not without influence on the result, from which it can be concluded that the reaction mechanism can be influenced catalytically.
The specific nature of each individual tannin extract requires the selection of the most suitable treatment method in each case to achieve the most effective sulfitation in the most economical way.
The table below illustrates the effects that sulfited vegetable tanning extracts exert on concrete in comparison with the same untreated extracts.
The three different tannin extracts used had been sulfited as follows (sulfitation additive calculated on the dry substance of the tanning extract):

<tb> 0.10 <SEP> 5.1 <SEP> 4/15 <SEP> 1.4 <SEP> 344 The above test results characterize the following superior properties of the sulphited tanning extracts: the sulphited products have an effect The not inconsiderable water saving that increases with the degree of sulfitation; also be they cause strength increases of considerable extent, which even increase with increasing application amount;
the air-entrainment effect of the sulfited tannin extracts shows all gradations depending on their type; Products such as sulphited quebracho extract are suitable for narrowly defined air pore formation; the retardation effects of the sulfited products are markedly weakened.
As was also found, the sulphited tanning extracts are particularly suitable for increasing the effectiveness of other plasticizing and air-pore-forming additives in the direction of perfecting the often not fully satisfactory increases in compressive strength and, in particular, flexural strength increases and also in terms of water saving influence.
Here, even very small amounts of 0.01-0.03% of the sulphited, vegetable tanning extracts (dry matter calculated on cement) are sufficient to bring about surprising improvements. Such small admixtures do not have a noticeable delaying effect, on the other hand one can achieve a desired delay effect with appropriately larger admixtures. Of course, to regulate the setting conditions, accelerators such as. B. calcium chloride can also be used.
Depending on the desired air entrainment capacity of the plasticizer to be combined with sulfited vegetable tannin extract, one can choose from the various extracts that product which either does not influence the air entrainment volume or increases it, or causes it at all, with the containment effect of Alkalis and lime on the formation of air pores in the tanning extracts can also be taken into account.
Some other substances, such as sulphonic acids and oxy acids, also have such a venting effect. The particularly effective combination of vegetable tanning extract with lignin sulfonic acid can be varied in every direction with regard to the air pore volume by means of suitable extracts and, if necessary, further additives of the specified type, where the constancy of the air pore volume is particularly valuable.
Finally, the use of the sulphited vegetable tanning extracts themselves as a retardation agent offers corresponding advantages. Furthermore, the products that can be used according to the invention can also be used in conjunction with sealants and / or other additives which are useful for producing certain properties of mortar or concrete.
On the basis of the finding that the sulfited vegetable tannin extracts are consistently favorable for concrete, the raw materials required for carrying out the process according to the invention are available in large quantities and in numerous variations and at low production costs.
The products of a known process, according to which plant parts containing tannin are extracted using fresh sulphite waste liquor, can also be used as starting material. Finally, the direct treatment of tanning woods or bark, for example by way of the sulfite cellulose process, leads to the products to be used according to the invention.
With the use of the strongest sulfited (up to 60% sulfitation additive) tanning extracts, which were not discussed in detail in the present part of the experiment because of their difficult and not yet economically viable production, much more far-reaching effects can be achieved.
