Le mélange obtenu est composé de 19,69 0/0 de pigment bleu, 0,39 % d'alcoyl-naphtalène-sulfo- nate sodique, 1,77 % de Duponol sec, 0,20 de Tamol et 77,95 % d'eau;

Stable aqueous dispersion of a colored pigment and process for preparing this dispersion Aqueous dispersions of organic pigments have several fields of application. They are suitable for dyeing natural or synthetic latexes, dyeing paper in the paper industry and, in combination with binders, dyeing textiles by printing or padding.
The present patent relates to a stable aqueous dispersion of a hydrophobic colored organic pigment comprising 14-35 parts by weight of dry pigment and 65-86 parts by weight of water per 100 parts by weight of pigment and water, and 4.5-20 parts by weight of a water soluble fatty alcohol sulfate per 100 parts by weight of dry pigment.
The present patent also relates to a process for preparing this dispersion, according to which the fatty alcohol sulfate is added to the mixture of water and pigment and the suspension obtained is treated in a homogenization apparatus.
The aforementioned dispersion is distinguished by its strong dyeing power, which results above all from the presence of fatty alcohol sulphate as a dispersing agent and as a hygroscopic agent.
Pigments which can be used in the manufacture of aqueous dispersions The organic pigments used to carry out the invention are usually prepared by precipitation. They are all insoluble in water. They can be used as a filter press cake or as a dry powder. Carbon black, which is also counted among organic pigments, is not prepared by precipitation and is used as a dry powder.
Here are examples of types of pigments 1) Pigments of the type phthalocyanine Phthalocyanine blue which is a copper phthalocyanine or tin and copper (Solid Monastral Blue or Heliogen Blue), green phthalocyanine which is a chlorinated copper phthalocyanine (Monastral Solid Green or Heliogen Green)
and Monastral Solid Golden Green, which is a new pigment of phthalocyanine.
2) Azo Insoluble Pigments Benzidine yolks which are coupling products of tetrazotated dichlorobenzidine with acetylacetic arylides, such as acetylacetic anilide, o -toluidine acetylacetic, xylidine acetylacetic,
p-chloranilide and acetylacetic po-chloranilide. Benzidine orange which is the product of the coupling of tetrazotated dichlorobenzidine with pyrazolone substitution products such as methyl - phenyl - pyrazolone. Hansa yellow which is the coupling product of acetylacetic arylides with anilines
diazotized substituted, such as 4-chloro-2-nitraniline or o-nitraniline, etc. Red azo pigments which are coupling products of naphthol AS-type compounds, such as naphthol AS, naphthol AS-OL, naphthol AS-BS, naphthol AS-D, with solid coloring salts derived from 2,5-dichloraniline,
p-nitro-o-toluidine or p-nitro-o-anisidine. By way of example, mention may be made of the coupling product of naphthol AS-ITR with the fast-setting solid coloring salt ITR (Fast Red Color Salt ITR).
Naphthol AS couplings can also give yellows and oranges from the insoluble azo pigment group. Aniline black as a pigment may also be on this list.
Other examples are toluidine brown and dianisidine blue, as well as a brown pigment obtained by forming the copper salt of paranitraniline red.
3) Pigment for dyes in the vat The dyes in the vat are of the indigoid or anthraquinone type. The indigoid type includes thioindigo derivatives and the anthraquinone type includes flavanthrone and benzanthrone derivatives, and the complex structures obtained by condensation of benzanthrone molecules. Mention may be made, as examples, of the following colored pigments: Thioindigo red B (coloring index No 1207, Schultz index No 912),
thioindigo rose (color index No 1211, Schultz index No 910).
Among the anthraquinone tank pigments we can mention Indanthrene blue (color index No 1106, Schultz No 837), Indanthrene ruby RD, Indanthrene orange RRTA, Indanthrene golden orange GA, Indanthrene brown RA, Helio solid yellow 4GL, Indanthrene brilliant violet 3BA,
4RN solid purple, indigo blue, Indanthrene RA navy blue. 4) Carbon blacks Oven blacks, channel blacks, acetylene blacks and carbon blacks can also be used.
To our knowledge, these blacks consist essentially of carbon and contain up to 10% molecules or more of hydrogen bound by its main valences, as well as up to 10% oxygen molecules bound by adsorption; therefore, carbon blacks are part of organic pigments.
They behave like pigments with a high content of hydrogen and oxygen.
Dispersing agents We therefore use as dispersing agents, fatty alcohol sulphates, such as lauryl-sulphates, cetyl-sulphates, oleyl-sulphates of sodium, ammonium or triethanolamine, and their mixtures.
As examples of commercial products, mention may be made of sodium lauryl sulfate, in the form of a dry powder, or in the form of an aqueous paste containing about 30% of active ingredient and some impurities consisting of salts. minerals.
It has been found that the action of fatty alcohol sulfates is generally improved when a small amount of auxiliary dispersing agents is added, preferably sodium alkyl sulfonates and especially sodium alkyl naphthalene sulfonates, such as isopropyl-naphthalene-sulfonate or isobutyl-naphthalene-sulfonate.
The proportions of surfactant are very high. 4.5-20 parts by weight of fatty alcohol sulphates per 100 parts of dry pigment are employed, but preferably at least 10% and better still 15-20%. The auxiliary dispersing agents are preferably used in proportions of 0.5- 4,
% of pigment content.
Protective colloids The deflocculation of pigments is further improved by adding protective colloids, such as ca seine or methylcellulose, to aqueous dispersions.
As protective colloids it is preferred to use about 1% dry casein based on the weight of dry pigment and about 5% low viscosity methylcellulose.
usually referred to as type 15 cps.
Under these conditions, the flocculation of the pigments is largely avoided and the particles can be kept in suspension. Larger amounts of protective colloids may be added in special cases.
Until now, pigmented resinous emulsions of the oil-in-water type prepared by means of the usual dispersing agents and according to the usual dispersion methods could not compete with the corresponding emulsions of the water-in-oil type, because their power. dye was only half as strong. With the novel dispersions according to the present invention, it is possible to prepare pigmented oil-in-water emulsions which are superior in their tinctorial power to water-in-oil emulsions.
The following examples illustrate the invention; in these examples the percentages are percentages by weight.
Example 1: One starts with a phthalocyanine blue press cake having a dry pigment content of 21.2% and 5448 g of this press cake 57.5 g of dry pigment are added. 'a 40% aqueous solution of sodium alkyl-naphthalenesulphonate and 346,
2 g of the Duponol WA brand product, paste containing 30% active ingredient (technical sodium lauryl sulfate). After a preliminary gentle arm, the product is not sufficiently fluid to be sent to a disintegrator (hammer flax).
This is why a further 11.5 g of the Tamol N brand product (condensation product of naphthalenesulphonic acid and formaldehyde) is added in order to complete the liquefaction of the product.
The mixture obtained is composed of 19.69% of blue pigment, 0.39% of sodium alkyl-naphthalenesulfonate, 1.77% of dry Duponol, 0.20 of Tamol and 77.95% of 'water;
relative to the pigment content, it contains 2% sodium alkyl-naphthalene sulfonate and 9% sodium lauryl sulfate.
This suspension is sent to a disintegrator and then to a colloid mill, the rotor of which has a diameter of 10 cm, which operates at low speed and the space between stator and rotor is 0.25 mm. Example 2 57.7 g of a sodium alkyl-naphthalene-sulfonate solution and 692.4 g of Duponol WA paste are added to the 5448 g of the press cake of Example 1 , using solutions similar to those of Example 1.
After having mixed the whole, the suspension becomes fluid and it is sent to a disintegrator and partially to a colloid mill, as in Example 1. The suspension obtained is composed of 18.63% pigment. blue, 0.37 1% sodium alkyl-naphthalenesulphonate, 3,
35% Duponol and 77.65% water. In relation to the pigment content,
the amount of sodium alkyl-naphthalene sulfonate added is 2% and the amount of lauryl sulfate is 18%.
Example 3 A dispersion is prepared from 5448 g of press cake, 57.7 g of a solution of sodium alkyl-naphthalene-sulfonate and 173.2 g of Du- ponol WA paste , using the press cake of Examples 1 and 2 and 1s same solutions of additional products.
Based on the pigment content, there is an amount of sodium alkyl-naphthalenesulphonate of 2% and 4.5% of lauryl sulphate. This mixture is not sufficiently fluid to be sent to a disintegrator, and 17.25 g of Tamol are added to obtain complete liquefaction.
The suspension consists of 20.27% pigment, 0.40% sodium alkyl-naphthalene sulfonate, 0.91 q / 0 of Duponol, 0.31% of Tamol and 78,
11% water. Finally, the suspension is sent to a colloid mill.
Example 4: 346.2 g of Duponol WA paste are added to the 5448 g of the press cake from the preceding examples. In order to liquefy the suspension sufficiently to send it to a disintegrator, 34.5 g of Tamol N are added. Finally, this sus pension is sent to a colloid mill.
Composition of the final product: 19.81% pigment, 1.69% Duponol, 0.68% Tamol and 77.82% water. In relation to the pigment content,

To a phthalocyanine green press cake having a pigment content of 27.6% is added the dry powder of technical sodium lauryl sulfate and alkyl-naphthalene sulfonate sodium as a dry powder.
Based on the pigment content, there is 18% sodium lauryl sulfate and 2% sodium alkyl-naphthalene-sulfonate. The press cake is mixed with a spatula, it liquefies completely in five minutes.
It has been found that the addition of dry powder, which is seductive because it does not increase the water content, gives very satisfactory results. However, the pre-mixing raises certain problems and requires stirrers with toothed knives to liquify the press cake. Porcelain agitators or turbine agitators are not suitable for this operation because they cannot break up the lumps of the press cake. The product thus obtained is then dispersed using a high speed turbo-mixer, with low clearance between the turbine and the stator, operating at approximately 3600 revolutions / minute.
About 15 minutes is fine, but occasionally it can be up to 30 minutes. A 5 HP motor mixer satisfactorily disperses a 225 kg press cake in a 200-250 liter capacity drum. An open drum is used. The homogenized suspension is sent to a colloid mill to complete the dispersion and deflocculation. The roller mixer also provides very satisfactory deflocculation and complete dispersion of the pigment in 24 to 48 hours.
Composition of the dispersion : 26.2 b / o pigment, 68.6% water, 4.7% sodium lauryl sulfate, 0.5% alkyl-naphthalene -sodium sulfonate. Example 6:
A suspension containing 25% pigment is prepared in a mixer from 45 kg of benzidine yellow which is a coupling product of dichlorobenzidine with o-toluidine acetylacetic, 0.9 kg of dry sodium alkyl-naphthalenesulfonate,
8 kg of the dry Duponol ME product (Duponol ME Dry is composed of 92 - 95% sodium lauryl sulfate and 8 - 5% sulfate <RTI
ID = "0003.0202"> and sodium chloride, the ratio of sodium sulfate to sodium chloride being 21/2: 1) and 126 kg of water. The mixture is homogenized for 30 minutes, then the mixture is passed through a colloid mill to achieve the deflocculation of the pigment. You can replace the colloid mill with a roller mill. In addition, it is possible to use for the dispersion or to complete the deflocculation a homogenizer, the dispersion device of which consists of a plunger pump working under high pressure and of a valve-type nozzle.
To obtain complete deflocculation of the pigment, a pressure of 210 - 350 kg / cm2 is established. This device works permanently, like colloid mills, and not like roller mills whose work is discontinuous.
Composition of the dispersion: 25.0% pigment, 70.05% water, 4,
45% Duponol ME and 5% sodium alkyl-naphthalenesulfonate.
Based on the amount of pigment, the dispersion contains 17.8% Duponol ME and 2% sodium alkyl-naphthalene sulfonate.
In this example, instead of benzidine yellow, insoluble azo reds can be used, such as the coupling products of naphthol AS-OL with the stable salts of scarlet red GG (scar late salt solid GG) or naphthol AS with diazotized p-nitro-o-toluidine or naphthol AS-BS with diazotized p-nitro-o-anisidine or finally naphthol AS-D with diazotized p-nitro-o-toluidine.
Example 7: The procedure is as in Example 5, but instead of the green press cake, a thioindigo chestnut press cake having a pigment content of 16.1% is used.
In this case, the composition of the dispersion - is: 15.6% pigment, 81.3% water, 2.8% sodium lauryl sulfate and 0.3% alkyl-naphthalene- sodium sulfonate.
Example 8: The procedure is as in Example 6, but using a dry powder of thioindigo FF rose instead of benzidine yellow.
Example 9: The procedure is as in Example 5 and an aqueous solution of ammonium caseinate having a casein content of 20% is added to the suspension, in a proportion such that addition of casein relative to the dry pigment represents 1 0/0. This mixture is sent to a mixer.
Composition of the dispersion: 25.85% pigment, 67.70% water, 4.65% sodium lauryl sulfate, 0,
51% sodium alkyl-naphthalene sulfonate, 1.29% casein. In relation to the pigment content,
the dispersion contains 18% sodium lauryl sulfate, 2% sodium alkyl-naphthalenesulfonate and 1% casein.
Example 10: The procedure is as in Example 9, but adding before the end of the homogenization process a 10% aqueous solution of low viscosity methylcellulose (of the 15 cps type) in quantity such that the dry methylcellulose content represents 5% of the pigment content.
Composition of the dispersion: 22.87% pigment, 70.27% water, 4.12% sodium lauryl sulfate, 0,
46% sodium alkyl-naphthalene sulfonate, 1.14% casein, 1.14% methylcellulose. Based on the pigment content, the dispersion contains 18% sodium lauryl sulfate,
2% sodium alkyl-naphthalenesulphonate, 1% casein, 5% methylcellulose.
Example 11 The procedure is as in Example 5, but adding to the mixer a 10% aqueous solution of low viscosity methylcellulose (of the 15 cps type)
in an amount such that the dry methylcellulose content is 5% of the pigment content.
Composition of the dispersion: 23.11% pigment, 71.10% water, 4.17% sodium lauryl sulfate, 0,
46% sodium alkyl-naphthalene sulfonate, 1.16% methylcellulose. In relation to the pigment content,
the dispersion contains 18% sodium lauryl sulphate, 2% sodium alkyl naphthalenesulphonate and 5% RTI ID = "0004.0260" WI = "24" HE = "4" LX = "1640" LY = "966"> methylcellulose.
The pigment suspensions of Examples 1 - 11 are very suitable for the formation of the colored concentrates in the form of oil-in-water emulsions, described in Swiss Patent No. 328397. After being diluted by means of an emulsifying mixture, colored concentrates give brilliant colors with excellent performance and good washability. It has been found that the complete deflocculation of the pigments is important for obtaining colors resistant to washing and this aim is achieved with the pigmented dispersions in accordance with the present invention.
To prepare such a colored concentrate, it is possible to proceed as follows: 42.15 parts of the xylol solution of the polyester resin B having a resin content of 50% described in Patent No. 328397, 0.31 part of drying agents such as naphthenates, 12.22 parts of a 10% aqueous solution of sodium lauryl sulfate, 20.65 parts of an aqueous solution of casein containing anticryptogamics,
5.48 parts of an ammonium hydroxide solution obtained by mixing 1 part of concentrated ammonium hydroxide with 1 part of water, 10.45 parts of a 20 '% solution of carboxymethylcellulose of low viscosity sodium and 8.65 parts of water are made into an emulsion as follows:
two thirds of the sodium lauryl sulfate solution are added to the resin solution, the remaining third, the water and the casein solution are mixed in a separate vessel and the mixture is added slowly and with stirring to the solution containing resin. The ammonium hydroxide solution and finally the sodium carboxymethylcellulose solution are then added. We homogenize everything. This emulsion is used as a binder in the preparation of colored concentrates.
The latter is prepared as follows: 59 parts of the binder emulsion described, 26.25 parts of the dispersion of phthalocyanine blue pigment of Example 2, 2.9 parts of 60 'polychloroprene latex are mixed. 0/0, 3.9 parts of pine oil and 7.95 parts of water. The mixture is homogenized and a colored concentrate forms. Instead of the dispersion of Example 2, other pigmented dispersions described herein can be employed. The parts in question are parts by weight.
