Method for cutting on an automatic lathe a thread inside a part and automatic lathe for the implementation of this method The present patent includes a method for cutting on an automatic lathe a thread inside a part driven in rotation by the spindle of the lathe, by means of a tool carried by a cross slide carriage controlled by the cams of the lathe, characterized in that the tool is introduced into the interior of the piece to be threaded by moving the slides of the carriage from a rest position to a working position, then cut the net by moving the tool relative to the carriage and finally, after finishing the last pass of the thread,
the withdrawal of the tool from the threaded part by returning the slides of the carriage to their rest position.
The patent also includes an automatic lathe for implementing the method. This lathe comprises a cross slide carriage actuated by a camshaft and provided with a threading tool, charac terized by the fact that said tool is carried by a threading device fixed on the upper slide movable longitudinally and which comprises a first and a second machining cam driven by the lathe spindle at a speed equal to a multiple of the camshaft speed of the lathe, the first machining cam causing the longitudinal cutting feed and the return of the tool with an amplitude equal to the length of the thread to be machined,
while the second machining cam causes the radial engagement and disengagement of the tool respectively at the start and at the end of each pass, so that the movements of the transverse and longitudinal slides of the carriage controlled by the shaft to Lathe cams only ensure the approach and return movements to the tool's home position at the start and end of the threading operation.
The appended drawing illustrates schematically and by way of example, an embodiment of an automatic threading lathe for carrying out the claimed process. In this drawing, only the parts necessary for a good understanding of the operation are shown.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view partially in section of the left part of the lathe.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view partially in section of the right part of the lathe. The lathe comprises a frame 1 on which is rotatably mounted a spindle 2 driven by a motor and a mechanical transmission, not shown. A thread 3 is clamped in a mandrel 4 mounted on the spindle 2. A helical wheel 5 integral with the spindle 2 meshes with a helical wheel 6 attached to one end of a control shaft 7 rotatably mounted in a bearing 8 attached to the frame 1. This shaft 7 controls, via a kinematic connection described below, a threading device F carrying a cutting tool 9.
The control shaft 7 is provided with a clutch E (for example with teeth or clogs), which has a driving part 10 and a driven part 11 and makes it possible to establish or interrupt the cinema link connecting the spindle. 2 to the threading device F. The engagement and disengagement of the two parts 10 and 11 of the clutch are controlled by a grooved cam 12 fixed on a camshaft 13 rotatably mounted on the frame 1 and driven by a train d 'bevel gears 14, 15 actuated by the lathe motor. This cam 12 controls, by the intermediary of levers 16, 17 and a rod 18, a sector 19 fixed on a rotary axis 20 carried by the frame 1.
This sector is capable of occupying two different angular positions, defined by two peripheral notches 21, 22 engaging a roller 23 rotatably mounted on the frame 1 of the lathe and maintained in contact with the edge of the sector 19 by a return spring. 24. A lever 25, fixed to the end of the shaft 20, actuates the driven and sliding part 11 of the clutch E and maintains it either in the engaged position with the driving part 10, or in the disengaged position, depending on the position. occupied by sector 19.
The lathe further comprises a cross slide carriage constituted by a lower slide 26 moving transversely on slides 27, 28 of the frame 1 and an upper slide 29 moving longitudinally on a slide 30 of the lower slide. A first flat cam 32 fixed to the camshaft 13 and a return spring 33 ensure the forward and return transverse movement of the slider 26 by means of a lever 34 provided with a toothed sector 35 in engagement with it. a rack 36 integral with the slide 26.
A second flat cam 37, also fixed on the camshaft 13, ensures the longitudinal movement back and forth of the upper slide 29 by means of a lever 38, two toothed sectors 39, 40 and a pusher. 41, integral with the toothed sector 40 and provided with a contact roller 42 rolling on the rear face 43 of the slide. The latter is maintained in constant contact with the roller 42 by the action of an antagonist spring 44 bearing on the lower slide 26.
The upper slide 29 carries the threading device F which comprises a horizontal shaft 45 rotatably mounted on the slide 29 and constituting the end of the kinematic connection connecting the spindle 2 to the threading device F.
This kinematic connection is formed from the following elements a) a horse head 46 of known type, integral with the frame 1 and comprising an input shaft, consisting of the end of the control shaft 7, an intermediate shaft 47 and an output shaft 48, on which are respectively mounted interchangeable toothed wheels 49, 50 and 51 which are chosen according to the pitch of the thread to be executed; b) a shaft 52 driven at one of its ends by the output shaft 48 of the horse head, via two angle pinions 53, 54.
The other end of this shaft 52 is rotatably mounted in a bearing 55 integral with the upper slide 29 and is dragged in the longitudinal and transverse movements of the latter; c) a horizontal shaft 56 rotatably mounted on the slide 29 and driven by the shaft 52 via angle gears 57, 58. This shaft 56 rotates the horizontal shaft 45 of the threading device F by the intermediate of a worm gear 59. 60.
To allow the end of the shaft 52 mounted in the bearing 55 to follow the movements of the slide 29, this shaft 52 comprises two cardan joints 61, 62 mounted between the horse head 46 and the slide 29. and two grooved parts 63, 64 sliding one on the other but angularly secured.
On the horizontal shaft 45 of the threading device F are wedged two machining cams, namely a cam-drum 65 with groove, called the boss, and a flat cam 66. The boss 65 actuates, through the intermediary of 'a finger 67 provided with a roller 68, an auxiliary longitudinal slide 69 sliding on guides 70 integral with the upper slide 29. A counter spring 71 bearing on the slide 29 exerts a thrust on the slide auxiliary longitudinal 69, so as to keep the roller 68 in contact with the rear face 72 of the groove of the boss 65.
In order to achieve a precision thread, it is in fact essential to eliminate any play that could occur at the end of the travel between the roller 68 and the groove of the boss 65, a play which would result in an offset between the rotation of the thread 3 and the feed movement of the cutting tool 9.
On the auxiliary slide 69 is articulated a flap or rectangular support 73 capable of pivoting on one of its sides about a horizontal axis X - X under the action of a pusher 74 carried by the upper slide 29 and actuated by the cam plate 66 by means of an angled lever 75 pivoted on the slide 29. The pusher 74 comprises a roller 76 which rolls on a longitudinal face 77 of the support 73, with which it is kept in contact by means of a spring 78 resting on the auxiliary slide 69.
The support 73 comprises an arm 79 in which is fixed in an adjustable manner longitudinally a horizontal axis 80 at the end of which, facing the spindle 2, is mounted the cutting tool 9. The axis 80 is adjusted so to present a lon gueur cantilevered at least equal to the depth of the hole to be threaded, so that the tool 9 can reach the end of the pass without the arm 79 abutting against the part to be threaded. The boss 65, which is interchangeable, is chosen so that the stroke that it prints to the tool 9 is equal to the length of the thread to be machined, while the cam 66, which is also interchangeable, is chosen according to the desired radial depth of cut.
The operation of the threading lathe described is as follows, the revolution being in its rest position, shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the lower slide 26 is at the end of travel in the direction of the arrow R and the upper slide 29 is at the end of the travel in the direction of the arrow S, positions for which the tool 9 is fully disengaged longitudinally and cross dirtiness of the spindle 2. On the other hand, the auxiliary slide 69 of the threading device F is fully in the direction of the arrow T, the position corresponding to the start of a pass of the tool 9. The pivoting support 73 occupies its extreme position in the direction of arrow U, corresponding to the released position of the tool 9 and determined by the maximum lift height of the flat cam 66 and the length of the arms of the crank lever 75.
After having clamped the piece to be threaded 3 in the mandrel 4 and fixed on the horse head 46 the gear train 49, 50 and 51 corresponding to the pitch of the thread to be executed, one climbs on the shaft 45 of the threading device F a boss 65 whose stroke corresponds to the length of this thread and a cam 66 corresponding to the desired depth of pass. The motor driving, on the one hand, the spindle 2 at high speed and, on the other hand, the camshaft 13 which performs a single revolution during the complete operation of threading of the part 3 is then started. .
The flat ends 32 and 37 actuate the lower 26 and upper sliders 29 by means of the mechanical members 34 to 36, respectively 38 to 43, causing the rapid transverse and longitudinal approach movements, in the opposite direction of the arrows R and S , which bring the slides 26 and 29 and therefore the threading device F in the working position. For this position, the axis 80 carrying the threading tool is centered on the axis of spindle 2.
On the other hand, the length l of the axis 80 is provided so that in this working position the cutting edge of the tool 9 is placed in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the spindle passing through the start of the thread to be executed, this plane possibly being situated, for example, as shown in the drawing, at a distance d inside the part to be threaded.
As soon as the threading tool occupies this starting position, the grooved cam 12 actuates the clutch E of the control shaft 7 to establish the kinematic connection connecting the spindle 2 to the threading device F, thus causing the rotation of the horizontal shaft 45 and of the cams 65 and 66, the speed of which is a multiple of the speed of rotation of the camshaft 13. The cam 66 prints to the tool 9, via the support 73 and its longitudinal face 77, a transverse displacement of engagement up to the radial depth of pass chosen by the operator, then the boss 65 prints to the tool a displacement of cutting advance by means of the organs 67 to 70.
As soon as the tool has completed the first pass, the cam 66 causes the radial release of the tool, via the members 73 to 77 and the res comes out 78, while the boss 65, whose action is combined with the thrust of the spring 71 on the auxiliary slide 69, causes the rapid return of the tool to its starting working position. The passes of the tool 9 follow one another in the same way until the moment when the grooved cam 12 of the camshaft 13 activates the clutch E in the opposite direction and interrupts the drive of the cams 65 and 66 of the threading device F. The adjustment of the cams 12, 65 and 66 is such that the cams 65 and 66 stop in their angular rest position shown in the drawing, for which the tool 9 is in the working start position.
At this moment, the flat cams 32, 37 of the camshaft 13 cause the return to the rest position of the slides 26 and 29 in the direction of the arrows R and S, by means of the members 33 to 36, 38 to 43 and springs 33 and 44 respectively. The drive of the spindle 2 and of the camshaft 13 is then interrupted to allow a new thread 3 to be mounted on the machine.
In usual automatic threading lathes, the cutting tool is integral with one of the slides of the cross slide carriage and the feed and return movements, engagement and disengagement of the tool, for each pass , are produced by longitudinal and transverse movements of these slides. This way of proceeding has the drawback of bringing into play for each of these movements a relatively large mass, because the weight of these slides is relatively high. This results in excessive energy expenditure, exaggerated wear of the moving parts involved, such as cams, pins and slides, and great difficulty in obtaining very precise movements, without play and sufficiently rapid to meet current requirements.
In addition, between each successive pass of the threading operation, the tool 9 must be returned each time to its rest position, which is the cause of very long dead times which are added to the actual machining times. , so that the total machining time is prohibitive.
On the other hand, in the lathe described, the relatively heavy slides of the carriage are only used to bring the tool into the working position, then into the rest position after the last pass, while the movements of the tool necessary for the threading operations are controlled by the members of the threading device F fixed to the upper slide and the mass of which is low enough to allow great rapidity of movement and great working precision. Thus, during the actual threading operation, the slides of the carriage remain stationary, while the threading tool is moved longitudinally and transversely with respect to them.
